If you think that the Age of Discovery slot has been around for quite a while then you would be right. The slot was first released back in 2008, however it was only recently released on mobile!
However, fans of the slot will no doubt feel that it was worth the wait. Always one of Microgaming's most enjoyable slots to play, the Age of Discovery slot on mobile brings the game to a whole new audience and it seems they will share in the enthusiasm that has followed the game since its release almost eight years ago.
As the name suggests, the slot is based on what has become known as the Age of Discovery, when European settlers and explorers first set sail to explore all parts of the globe, from Magellan's ill-fated trip around the world to Christopher Columbus setting foot in the America's, it was an age of discovery and expansion.
As you would expect, this nautical theme is what drives the Age of Discovery slot and the symbols on the reels are representative of items of that time including a sextant, a coat of arms, a ship, a compass and a gold coin. Riches from around the world that were newly discovered at this time, such as papaya, mango, avocado, banana and pomegranate are also displayed on the reels, with a sea monster also lurking among the other symbols.
The slot itself is a typical 5x3 reel slot from Microgaming and it has 25 fixed paylines in operation on every spin. This means you can wager from 0.25 up to the largest possible bet of 250.00 per spin. That is a large enough range of bets to ensure that Age of Discovery appeals to both the small stakes player as well as the higher rollers.
The game-play itself is rather basic, it isn't a video slot as such, but it has plenty of other things going for it in terms of features, so the little animated asides when you get a win won't be missed too much.
Where Ages of Discovery does score well however is in terms of the sound, which is perfectly suited to life at sea searching for new lands and which really does help draw the slot player into the game. In some games sounds can be a distraction but in Age of Discovery they really enhance the game-play.
In terms of bonus features, then there are the usual Wilds and Scatter symbols on the reels. The Golden Doubloon (or coin) is the in game wild symbol and can replace any of the low or high symbols on the reels to create a winning payline. Land five of these on a payline and you'll release the biggest 60,000 coin jackpot available in the base game.
The only symbol the Wild doesn't substitute is the in game scatter which is the ships compass. Three or more of these symbols across the reels and you are taken into the Treasure Bonus round. After all, what is a game about the high seas without a treasure map or two involved!
On the map is a land and outlined on this land are ten "X" marks the spot. Simply select from the X's to unveil a cash amount to win it, however be warned, one of the X's holds a Skull and Crossbones and if you pick that, then the game ends and you can't pick any further X's or increase your winnings.
In this simple pick-me game, you could win up to a staggering 32,250 coins if you get lucky.
Age of Discovery doesn't have free spins but it does have a whole lot more to offer and is a game that will really appeal to the more retro-style mobile slot enthusiast.
