Many of us have enjoyed the 1001 Arabian Nights legendary stories and the stories of Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves. It's perhaps unsurprising given the fertile imagination of slots designers that there are not more Arabian themed slots as a result. However, Rival Gaming are one such company that have developed their own game on that theme and it is called Arabian Tales.
As you can guess, the slot is based on the stories told in the 1001 Arabian Nights and there are some famous characters from those slots represented, somewhat loosely, on the reels, along with other famous icons from Arabian culture.
This is a medium volatility slot that has up to 50 selectable pay lines in play and you can wager from 1 coin to 10 coins on each of the lines if you so wish. Coins range from just 0.01 up to a maximum of 0.25 and that does give you a very large betting range from 0.01 (or 0.50 if you want to play the minimum bet but with all 50 lines in play) up to a maximum bet of 125.00.
Let's take a closer look now at how the Arabian Tales slot shapes up.

I have to say that I am impressed with what Rival have done with the presentation of this slot. Before you start there is a little animated introduction to the slot which introduces some of the main characters on the reels and this is very nicely put together and really does help ease you into the game.
The set up of the slot is also nicely done with a starry night backdrop to the reels in front of a large Arabian-styled palace. Framing this are two lamps and some draped curtains in deep red which does give the slot a rather important feel.
The reels dominate the middle of the screen and there are five of them each with three symbols on. There's a line selector button on each side of the reels and at the foot of the reels are the main selection buttons including line and coin selectors, an auto-play button, a bet max button and of course the spin button. The coin selector is to the left and allows you to select the size of coin to play.
The sound on the slot is somewhat sparse and only gets going when you click the reels. There's a magical sound as the reels spin and more Arabian sounding musical pieces when you trigger certain features. These are good but I feel that they could have done a lot more with the sound than they did.
What's on the reels?
There are a number of different low, medium and higher value symbols on the reels in the Arabian Tales slot. The lowest value of these symbols is the playing cards and these run from nine through to the ace. Wins range from 3 coins up to 150 coins but it should be noted that if you play 50 lines per spin, then you are going to need to hit five symbols on a line to record a profit with these symbols.
There are three medium value symbols which are the spell book, the jewel-encrusted dagger and the magic carpet. These offer wins from 15 coins up to 600 coins and you'll need at least four of these on a line to register any wins above 50 coins.
The higher value symbols are the lady with the snake and the villain and these offers wins from 30 coins up to 1,000 coins and again, you'll only land a profit when playing maximum lines by landing four or more across the reels.
The final symbol is the jackpot symbol which is the bearded man holding a chalice. This pays out 50 coins for three on a line, 300 for four and the maximum jackpot of 2,500 coins for five across a single line.
There are three other features on the slot that are all linked to the main bonus features of the game and we will explore them in more detail below.
The magic lamp is the in game Wild but it is an Expanding Wild and when landed on a reel, it will expand to cover the entire reel, if a win can be triggered from doing so. The Wild does not replace the scatter symbol but it does come with a 2x multiplier which doubles any standard win if it is completed with a Wild.
You can land the magic lamp Wild on any of the first three reels though it tends to pay more often when landed on either of the first two reels, rather than the third.
Free Spins features
Somewhat unusually, the Scatter symbol in the Arabian Tales slot, which is the Tiger, does not have anything to do with triggering the Free Spins bonus. Instead, landing two to five of the scatters anywhere across the reels triggers a cash payout of between 1x and 50x your stake.
To trigger Free Spins there is a dedicated Free Spins symbol and that is the genie of the lamp. You need to land three or more of these to trigger the Free Spins round. The number of genies landed will also determine how many free spins you receive. Three genies gives you 12 free games, four gives you 25 and the maximum five gives you a massive 50 Free Spins.
In addition to your spins, you will also find that all wins during Free Spins come with a 3x multiplier as standard which can really increase the value of a win in this bonus.
Other bonus features
Other than the bonus features listed above there are no other additional bonus features in the Arabian Tales slot.
Best feature of the Arabian Tales slot
There are lots of nice touches in the Arabian Tales slot, I think the presentation is excellent in the main, the game plays nicely and offers some sizeable rewards when the bonuses are triggered and it does hold your interest. However, I think the best aspect of the slot is the Free Spins bonus round. While the 12 Free Spins are not likely to produce a sizeable win if you can hit 25 or better still the 50 Free Spins then the chances of landing a sizeable win increase a great deal. It is this feature, along with the Expanding Wild on the first three reels of the slot which tend to contribute towards the better value wins you land when playing the game.
What does the Arabian Tales slot lack?
For me the biggest issue with the Arabian Tales slot is the size of the wins compared to your 50-coin bet if you are playing the maximum number of lines. It's not great when you bet 50 coins hit a winning line and win just 3 coins back. I think this is a big disincentive to playing the game, especially as in the base game you tend to find that the vast majority of your wins are these smaller amounts and as a result your bankroll starts to dwindle away rather quickly. You can top it up with some of the rarer larger wins but these are not always the easiest to land and can take time to hit.
The Arabian Tales slot is a bit of a dichotomy, it is presented beautifully initially but then the sound fades out and it is silent apart from when you spin, there are some good bonus features and sizeable wins available but you tend to find that you only trigger the lower value wins in the base game (which if you are playing the maximum 50 lines means you make a big loss on most spins). All in all, this is a slot which has some great bonuses but triggering them takes time and that costs money so if you are not comfortable with medium to high variance games, then you should perhaps look elsewhere.
