Julius Caesar is greatest of Roman emperors. A distinctive nose and a rather thin, gaunt looking individual who should have picked better friends, especially around the Ides of March. Of course, the reality of Caesar is somewhat different, but in the world of slots, the Roman Emperor is who you want him to be.
Realtime Gaming wanted him to be the focal point for their Roman-themed slot Caesar's Empire, which celebrates the vast swathes of land the advancing Roman army conquered across Europe, Asia and Africa at the height of their powers.
In this review, we'll take a closer look at the slot, its bonus features and whether it is worth playing, first with a brief review of the main details of the slot and then a more in-depth look at what it has got available.

Presentation
So how would we describe Caesar's Empire slot? Well if you wanted to be unkind, then 'basic' would perhaps be one word, 'retro' is perhaps a more fashionable description given that these types of slots which don't have too many bangs and whistles all tend to get lumped under that heading nowadays.
Personally, I feel Caesar's Empire is definitely in the retro camp. Yes it is basic, the sound effects (which sound very much like a mechanized one-armed-bandit type of slot, rather than a more modern game) tend to indicate that this is meant to be a retro styled slot, despite the fact it has a number of more modern features.
Under those terms, Caesar's Empire works very nicely, it will certainly appeal to fans of the older style of game, but it also has a number of more modern features, including a rather healthy Random Progressive Jackpot prize, that will also offer something for the more modern gamer.
In terms of presentation, the Coliseum (restored to its full glory) is the backdrop for the slot and the symbols on the reels are somewhat basic, but they do the trick even if it is in a somewhat basic and simplistic style.
What's on the reels?
On the reels are a number of symbols, the majority of them being the lower value plying card symbols. These range from 9 through to the ace with 9,10 offering the lowest set of payouts (of up to 100 coins for five on a pay line) and the Ace or King offering higher value payouts of up to 125 coins.
In truth, Playing Card lows, while recognized ubiquitously as low value symbols are a little incongruous here on a slot which is based on the Roman Empire. I would have been happier to see these symbols replaced with something more befitting the Roman period.
The higher value symbols on the reels include a bowl of fruit, a sword and shield, a Roman's Centurion helmet and the highest paying symbol is the visage of Cleopatra. Payouts increase sharply on these higher value symbols from 150 coins for five bowl of fruit symbols on a pay line up to 2,500 coins for five Cleopatra symbols on the same.
Alongside these standard symbols thee are just two other symbols on the reels. The Wild symbol (which is a coin with the face of Julius Caesar on) and the scatter (which is a picture of the fully formed Coliseum). We will learn more about what each of these symbols does in the two sections below.
Wild Features
The Wild symbol is the gold coin and in this game it is called the Substitute symbol. It offers a payout of 2 coins for 1 on a pay line, 25 coins for two, 250 coins for three and 2,500 coins for all four on a pay line.
The symbol can also substitute for any of the higher or lower value symbols on the reels to help create winning pay lines with these coins. Land more than one of the Caesar Coins and you can turn multiple pay lines into winning ones on the same spin and land some of the bigger value prizes in the base game.
The best thing about the Wild symbol however is that every time it is used on a pay line with a standard symbol, it awards a 3x multiplier to the win. This is the case for every winning pay line using the standard symbols, hence the biggest win in the base game is not the 2,500 jackpot for five Cleopatra symbols, but 7,500 if you can land four Cleopatra symbols on a pay line together with one of the Caesar Coin wilds.
Free Spins Features
In many games, three scatter symbols anywhere across the reels tends to trigger the free spins bonus round but in the Caesar's Empire game this is a little different. Instead what you need to land is one or more of the Caesar Wild coin symbols on the first four reels and on the same spin, land the Coliseum Scatter symbol on the fifth reel.
The Coliseum Scatter is on every reel but landing multiple of these symbols on a pay line simply triggers a win of between 1x and 100x your total bet (depending on how many scatters are landed).
Once you trigger the free spins bonus round, you are awarded 10 free spins and all the Coliseum Scatter symbols are transformed into either Caesar Wild symbols or the highest value Cleopatra symbols for each of the free spins.
Every time you land a Caesar Wild, you will receive a random bonus of additional free spins, which can be as much as five free spins per Wild landed. This means if you keep triggering Wilds during free spins, then you'll keep receiving more free spins to play through.
Other Bonus Features
The other main bonus feature of the Caesar's Empire slot is the Progressive Jackpot prize, which in this game is simply known as the Random Jackpot. As the name suggests, this is a progressive prize which increases in value as you play but which can only be awarded entirely at random on any spin from any player.
If you are lucky enough to trigger the Random Jackpot then any winnings are added to any winnings you have won in the game itself.
Best Feature of the Caesar's Empire slot
Without doubt the most appealing aspect of the Caesar's Empire slot is the free spins round. Firstly, it is a novel way that you trigger the bonus (and it does trigger relatively frequently), secondly it offers decent payouts and thirdly, you can trigger more free re-spins relatively easily by simply landing the Caesar Coin Wild on the reels during the base game.
Certainly, the bonus game lifts the slot from the base game which is a little repetitive at times.
What does the Caesar's Empire slot lack?
I think the biggest thing that Caesar's Empire slot lacks, like so many Realtime Gaming slots, is variation. It seems Realtime Gaming have hit upon this somewhat standard format for their slots and are religiously keeping to it. That's OK if you have the best slot available, but I don't think this format is the best that can be done and a bit more variation in the game-play, and perhaps a few more bonus features and more imaginative presentation, would have lifted the slot considerably.
Conclusion
Caesar's Empire is another in Realtime Gaming's seemingly endless list of slots that have the same 20 pay line, free spins bonus game with a progressive format. These games are all very much-of-a-muchness and over time, you do feel like you are playing the same slot, just with different symbols on the reels. That said, I did like the bonuses in Caesar's Empire which are well thought out and do at least show a little creativity. This isn't' a bad slot, it just isn't particularly innovative or imaginative.
