More Game Themes
There's nothing like a good crazy scientist to spark off a bit of interest in a particular genre or game. In the past we have had figures like Dr Watts Up and even Dr Frankenstein as the subject of slot games. These mad professor types are also very famous in film and TV with the likes of Doc Brown from the Back to the Future series being a perfect example of the fine line between genius and madness.
It is fair to say then that the mad scientist is a frequently visited theme in many different forms of entertainment and Realtime Gaming have done precisely that with their latest new slot Dr Winmore.
Released in February 2020, this new slot is a very different style of game to a typical Realtime Gaming slot, boasting as it does no pay lines in play but a cluster wins approach of four of the same symbols (horizontally or vertically) adjoining on the reels. Add to that a Cascade Multiplier Bonus, plus some very cute minions-style robots that offer their own bonuses and it is easy to see why this new game has got people talking.
So with that in mind, we decided to take a closer look at the slot to see exactly what it has to offer.

Presentation
There is an eerie purple backdrop to the Dr Winmore slot and the reels are superimposed over this. They are not really reels as such, more a 5x5 grid which is where the symbols drop down onto in the game. There are no pay lines in play, instead you win by landing clusters of four or more symbols either horizontally, vertically or a combination of both across the reels. Symbols cannot cluster diagonally unfortunately.
The sound and presentation of the slot is very nicely done with a jaunty tune playing as you play and a number of sound effects which launch when you land certain bonus features in the game. All in all, this is a very polished looking and sounding slot game.
What's on the reels?
There are eight standard symbols on the reels, plus a number of other symbols that offer special effects and bonus features, which we will explore in more detail in the sections below. The standard symbols start include a number of scientific containers with different colored liquids in increasing in value from orange to blue to red to yellow. To land a win you need a cluster of four or more of these symbols with the maximum pay out reserved for any clusters of eight or more symbols together.
The higher value quartet of symbols include a purple, yellow and green container, while the plasma ball is the highest value standard symbol offering 500 coins per win if you land eight or more as part of a cluster win.
Let's now take a look at the first of the specialist symbols in the game, the Wild symbol.
Wild features
The Dr Winmore symbol is the in game Wild and it can be used to substitute for any of the eight standard symbols on the reels outlined above. It cannot be used as a substitute for any of the different robot symbols on the reels.
As a Wild symbol, once the symbol is used as part of a win of four or more symbols in a cluster, the Wild will disappear from the reels although additional Wilds can drop down into the spaces created on the reels to trigger subsequent wins. There is no multiplier attached to any wins landed with a Wild unfortunately.
Free Spins features
The Dr Winmore slot does not have a Free Spin feature due to the nature of the game being a cluster-pay game. Instead there are different bonus features that pertain to this particular form of game that are available in the game and we outline what these are in the section below.
Other bonus features
The main bonus feature of the Dr Winmore slot is the four robots, that look rather like electronic versions of the Minions from the Despicable Me series of films. When you land one of the four robot symbols, which appear randomly on the reels, the robot will wait until all wins are paid out before it activates.
When the robot activates it will remove a certain pattern of symbols on the reels, based on the color and type of robot landed. The Blue robot will clear the row of symbols it is on. The yellow robot will clear the column of symbols it is on. The green colored robot clears both the row and column that it is located on while the red robot will clear all the eight symbols that it is adjacent to and which surround it.
Removing these symbols will see additional cascading symbols drop down from above to replace the symbols that have been removed and these can trigger additional wins.
Furthermore, any Cascading Wins are subject to a multiplier bonus based on how many Cascading Wins are triggered in sequence. You can earn a multiplier from 2x up to 6x the standard win by landing successive Cascading Wins in sequence on a single spin. Once you have a drop of symbols that does not result in a Cascading Win, then the multiplier will revert back to 1x.
Best feature of the Dr Winmore slot
There is a lot to like with the Dr Winmore slot. The Cascading Reels feature is a nice touch and can add a great deal of value to some of the wins, if you can start triggering these wins one after the other, however it is a little tricky to get up to the larger multiplier wins. For me, the stars of the show are the robot bonuses as these can make landing these Cascading Reels wins much easier and of course, they look very cute and can facilitate some sizeable wins, even if they are just part of a relatively standard win.
What does the Dr Winmore slot lack?
Some people may balk at the idea that the Dr Winmore slot doesn't have any Free Spins attached as standard but this type of cluster-pays game doesn't easily lend itself to a free bonus of this type. I would have perhaps like to have seen a payout, large or small, for the robot bonuses, rather than they just removing the symbols on the screen, but I can see why it would be hard to figure out how to calculate what this should be. This probably isn't a game for a slot purist, but if you like a game that is different and innovative, then Dr Winmore ticks all the right boxes.
Conclusion
It may not be a traditional slot in the sense of reels and pay lines, but the Dr Winmore slot still has plenty going for it. A lack of a genuinely free bonus round may hamper its appeal with some players but even so, with the Wild symbol, the robot bonus symbols and the Cascading Symbols bonuses, there is still plenty of ways to earn some decent cash prizes in the game. As a lower variance slot too, the game offers players with smaller bankrolls a fun way to play a game that isn't going to chew up a great chunk of their spending money.
