Games Related to Dream Run
The Fast And The Furious films are hugely successful and one of the biggest film franchises of all-time. So far there's been seven films in total in the series which used to tell the story of a group of street racers.
The Fast And The Furious is clearly the inspiration behind Realtime Gaming's slot Dream Run. Indeed, some of the key elements of the slot, notably the bonus features, could well have been lifted from a movie from the series.
So is Dream Run a slot that hits the accelerator and takes you on a thrilling ride that could lead to you landing a fantastic jackpot prize, or is this something of an old banger which is destined for the slot scrap yard? Let's take a closer look and find out.

The look of the Dream Run slot is slightly different to most others. You have the balance, bet size and any wins clearly displayed at the top of the screen and underneath them are the Mini and Major Jackpots displayed side by side. Underneath this you have the 5x3 reels with each pay line outlined down each side and then at the foot of the reels there are just three buttons, Auto-play, the Bet Increase or Decrease buttons and the Spin button.
The setting for the slot is a neon-lit city but to be truthful the way the slot is set out you cannot make much out of the background as you play.
Somewhat unusually, the slot is rather quiet, which is odd for a game based on the throbbing engines of racing cars. There's no musical accompaniment on the reels, simply some sound effects to make it sound like an old-style one armed bandit. Music and animations do kick in when you land winning spins using the two Wild symbols (which we will explore in more detail below) and to be fair they have been used well throughout the slot.
Things do get more animated however when you start to trigger the bonus features and in truth that is when the Dream Run slot really does kick the action up a gear.
What's on the reels?
The reels are populated with the usual playing card low symbols (from to through to the Ace) and these are the lower value wins, offering up to 200 coins as a standard win.
Other symbols on the reels are a speedometer and Nitro Burst button, a gun, wheel, driving wheel and a blonde lady carrying a checkered flag. These offer wins from just a couple of coins, up to the maximum standard base game win of 2,500 coins for five of the blonde lady on a pay line.
All of the higher paying symbols, bar the speedometer and Nitro Burst symbols offer payouts for just two symbols on a pay line, but the payouts for these are generally small. Indeed many of the most common wins are relatively small with most wins not covering the size of your bet, which is a bit disappointing. However, you can increase the size of wins using the multipliers attached to the Wild symbols as we will look at in more detail in the section below.
There are two different Wild features in the game. The first of these is the Opponent Racer symbol which appears on the second, third, fourth and fifth reels. This acts as a standard Wild, substituting for other symbols to create winning pay lines.
However, in addition to this symbol there is also the Racer symbol on the first reel. Like the Opponent Racer symbol, it substitutes for all of the other standard symbols, but the big positive from this Wild is that it also awards a 3x multiplier on any winning combination that it is a part of.
You can of course land multiple Wilds across the reels and indeed when this happens, you stand a much better chance of landing a bigger value win.
One of the nice features of the Race Wild on the first reel is that it effectively gives you a chance of trebling the maximum wins available on the slot, so the jackpot of 2,500 for five of the blonde lady symbols on the reel, would be 7,500 if the first of these symbols is the Racer Wild on the first reel.
Free Spins Features
Land three or more of the Scatter symbols on the reels and then have them change green, then you trigger the Dream Run Racing feature. Here five cars will race against each other along the streets and to begin with, you get to select from one of the five cars participating.
Once you have chosen a car the race will begin and depending on where your chosen car finishes, you will win 5, 10, 15, 20 or 25 free spins depending on if they finish 5th to 1st in the race. If your car finishes 4th or 5th, then the free spins start immediately. Finish 1st to 3rd however and you enter a second race where once again you pick from five cars competing.
In this race, you win a multiplier prize based on where your car finishes. Finish first and you win 100x your usual stake, second is a 25x prize, 3rd a 15x prize, 4th a 10x prize and 5th gives you a 5x multiplier. After this race, if you finish 3rd or lower, your cash bonus is awarded and your free spins will start. Finish in the top two however and you trigger a third race.
The third race awards another multiplier win for players and this time the multiplier will be applied to all the wins you land in the free spins. Depending on whether you finish 1st to 5th, the multipliers you can win range from 7x down to 3x.
Finish outside the top two and your multiplier will be applied to your total win in free spins and that bonus round will start, however if you finish in the top two again, then the fourth race will begin and this is where it gets exciting as this is where you stand to win one of the two progressive jackpot prizes. Win the fourth and final race and you land the Major progressive, finish 2nd or worse and you land the Mini progressive.
Other Bonus Features
There are a couple of other bonus features on the Dream Run slot that are worth noting and the first of these is the Nitro Racing feature. You can elect to try and trigger this feature by collecting Racer Wild symbols on the first reel. The more of these you collect, the more chance you have of triggering the Nitro Feature when you decide to give it a try using the Instant Trigger feature. Depending on how many of the Race Wilds you have collected, your chances of triggering the bonus from Instant Trigger are expressed by a percentage.
This then translates into a spinning wheel were certain sectors that are the equivalent to your percentage are highlighted. If the selector stops on one of these sectors then you trigger the bonus. If it doesn't then your attempt fails and you head back to the base game.
The Nitro Racing feature then follows a very similar set up to the Dream Run Racing feature with a number of races held, each offering a mixture of free games, multiplier cash prize, multiplier free games bonus and then a chance at the progressive prizes in the fourth race. However, in Nitro racing, you only need to finish in the top four for the first, which gives you more chance of progressing into the later races.
Best Feature of the Dream Run slot
Without doubt the best feature of the Dream Run slot is the Nitro Racing feature. The Dream Run Racing feature is pretty good in itself, but the Nitro Racing pips it because during the races, it is easier to progress to the later races as more of the race positions qualify and on the Cash Prize race (the second race) the size of the maximum multiplier you can win is increased to 100x to 50x and as such, all the other prizes available in that race are improved too.
That said the Dream Racing feature is still good value when you can trigger it, but it just doesn't offer quite the same chances of hitting a big win on it compared to the Nitro racing feature.
What does the Dream Run slot lack?
My issue with the Dream Run slot isn't so much what it lacks, but how it uses the Scatter symbols in the game. In this game, the scatter symbol is a racing light, which when two or more appears on screen will turn from white to either green or red.
That sounds all well and good and fits in nicely with the theme of the slot, but the issue I have is that when you land the scatters, you need them to turn green in order to trigger any wins or free spins. Unfortunately of course, many, many times one or more of the symbols will turn red and that means you don't trigger the bonus.
This is hugely disappointing as you feel somewhat cheated at having landed three scatters for example, only for one to turn red and deny you a chance at the Dream Racing bonus round. Other slots award free spins when you land the scatters, so it feels like players are being penalized by this feature and that is never a positive for any slot.
Dream Run slot has some great feature and is nicely presented with decent use of sounds and animations throughout the game and particularly in the bonus features. These features, especially the Nitro Racing bonus, offer the players a chance of some big value prizes and even a shot at winning the two progressive jackpots.
However, the game is stymied by some very low payouts on some combinations of symbols which really hit the play value and the fact that when you hit three scatters, you still need them all to turn green in order to trigger the bonus round and that seems unduly punitive on players when compared to other slots.
