It's been interesting seeing how much Halloween has grown in popularity over the years. When I was a youngster, many moons ago, the most exciting thing about Halloween was bob apple or duck apple.
Halloween is also a great subject for slot games, and it is unsurprising that these games are very popular at this time of the year. To try and catch the mood of the slot playing nation, Realtime Gaming have released a brand new game called Halloween Treasures, which comes packed full of unusual bonus features based on the famous day.
And to celebrate its release, some of our top casinos are offering a limited-time bonus deal you can use to join and enjoy the slot too.
So how does this new game shape up? Let's take a closer look to find out.

Presentation
The presentation of the Halloween Treasures slot is very nicely done. The game is set against a rather plain backdrop of a wall, with ivy growing up it. The reels are set against this and are relatively dark. The symbols are nicely realized and all the golden symbols you have selected are shown in gold on the reels, rather than their standard coloring.
One nice touch is the music which is suitably creepy for a Halloween slot, but the tune is not particularly in your face and it offers a nice ambient backdrop to the slot, a feature which I feel most slot games would do well to copy.
The four progressives are displayed to the right of the reels, with the golden symbols you have chosen to activate shown in the top left corner by the reels. You can activate the symbols by clicking on the meter bar on the left of the reels to select how many of these symbols you want active in the game.
What's on the reels?
There are11 standard symbols in the game, but what symbols they are depend on how many of the Golden Symbols you have enabled in your game.
There are seven symbols that are available in all games, regardless of how many golden symbols you activate. These are the six playing card low symbols, from the 9 through to the Ace and these offer wins from just 5 coins up to 15 coins.
The golden symbol vial is also present on the reels and this offers a range of wins from 8 coins, up to 100 coins.
The other four symbols are the pumpkin, vampire, wizard's hat and candles and these can either be standard symbols, or if you select them, golden symbols. The size of the payouts for each of these symbols depends on whether they are golden symbols or not, as golden symbols pay out more than standard symbols.
Also, on the reels are two different Wild symbols and a Scatter symbol which all access the main bonus features of the slot as described below.
Wild features
The purple door is the in game Wild and it appears on the middle three reels of the slot only. It can substitute for any of the standard symbols outlined above to help create better value wins and it can also substitute for the Scatter symbol on the reels, but only when it is use in a consecutive line of Scatters across the reels.
Another Wild symbol is the RIP Gravestone symbol which only appears on the third reel. This is a special Wild symbol that does not substitute for the other Wild or the Scatter symbol, but when it is used in conjunction with the other symbols, it offers a multiplier on any wins, ranging from 1x up to 5x the standard win, depending on how many Golden Symbols you have in play on that spin. The more Golden Symbols you have, the greater the value of the multiplier.
Free Spins features
The crystal ball is the main Scatter symbol in the game, and you can trigger 12 Free Spins when you land three or more of these symbols from left to right across the reels. This is not a game where you can land the Scatter in any position, which is a little disappointing.
However, one positive is that the Wild symbol can substitute for a Scatter symbol in this game, which means you can trigger the Free Spins round by combining Wild symbols and Scatters.
During your Free Spins bonus, the six lower value playing card symbols are removed from the reels, leaving just the higher value and bonus symbols on the reels, which of course, offers you a better chance at landing some of the larger value wins in the slot.
Other bonus features
The other bonus feature of the Halloween Treasures slot is the four different progressive jackpot bonus features. These are the Mini, Minor, Major and Grand Prizes and they range in value.
To ensure you have a chance to play for all the jackpot prizes, you need to have all Golden Symbols activated in the game. This does increase the size of your bet, but it means that all four jackpots are available to be won. If you elect to play with fewer Golden Symbols in the game, then not all progressive jackpots will be available.
For example, if you play with just the default setting of one golden symbol, no progressive jackpot prize is available, but add a second golden symbol and you can now win the Mini jackpot prize. Add a third and you can win the Mini and Minor and so on.
Adding a Golden Symbol does increase the value of your bet up to a maximum of 88x your unit stake, so it is worth ensuring you are happy playing at the level you select when you start your spins.
You can win any of the available jackpots in your game by triggering the Halloween Jackpot Feature which can be triggered randomly when you land a Wild on the reels.
In the game, you get to select from 12 magic coins that appear on screen. Each reveals a jackpot symbol. When you match three of one symbol, that is the jackpot you win. Of course, only the jackpots currently active in your game, based on your golden symbols, will be available in this bonus feature. If just one Jackpot is active, then you win that jackpot by default.
Best feature of the Halloween Treasures slot
There are a large number of bonus features on the Halloween Treasures slot to consider when deciding the best feature and while I like the progressive jackpot element of the game, I am not too keen on having to play with the maximum number of golden symbols in order to stand a chance of winning them all. As such, I think the Free Spins option is the best aspect of the game, especially with those lower value symbols removed from the reels. However, I would add that it can take a good deal of time to trigger this bonus, so patience is required.
What does the Halloween Treasures slot lack?
I don't think the Halloween Treasures slot lacks anything in terms of content, the bonus features it comes with are ample to keep players interested in playing the game. My one gripe though is that to have a shot at winning the big money progressive jackpots, you need to play the maximum bet which is considerably more than a standard bey and that does mean that some lower stakes players may not want to give this game a try as a result.
Conclusion
Despite the fact that I think it is a bit unfair to force players to play the game at the highest price per spin to access any chance of landing the top progressive jackpot prizes, there is enough in the Halloween Treasures slot to compensate for that. The golden symbols are a nice addition to the base game and can increase the wins here very nicely and the fact you can win some sizeable amounts in the base game and particularly Free Spins, makes this an appealing slot. However, it just doesn't feel like at times you get great value for your money and that is this slots biggest drawback, especially for mid to lower stakes players.
