One of the most famous of all the Greek myths and legends was the story of Theseus and the Minotaur. The young soldier volunteered to be one of the Athenian youngsters sent every nine years to be devoured by the Minotaur.
With help from Ariadne, the daughter of King Minos, who handed him a ball of thread which he could use to find his way out of the labyrinth. Following her instructions, Theseus hunted down the Minotaur and slayed the beast, found his way back out of the labyrinth and set sail for home.
However, he forgot to change the sail on his boat from black to white, meaning when his father, King Aegeus, saw the boat return with a black sail, he thought his son was dead and flung himself into the sea. Hence we now have the Aegean Sea.
This famous legend has inspired many other stories and it has now provided the inspiration behind Rival Gaming's newest slot Lucky Labyrinth. In this updated story, a young girl and her baby brother are transported to the Lucky Labyrinth where her young sibling is held by the King of the Gobins. The only way to save him is through, the Lucky Labyrinth, where she will encounter an assortment of unusual characters as she attempts to bring her brother home.
Let's take a closer look at how Rival's newest slot shapes up.

The presentation of the Lucky Labyrinth slot is nicely done. The musical and sound effects that accompany the game tie in nicely with the on screen action and they don't tend to irritate the player when playing so that they will hit the mute button.
The graphics on screen are vividly colored with purple and green being the predominant colors. The backdrop of the Lucky Labyrinth land, wherever that may be and you can see the maze laid out behind the reels and a distant mountain, presumably the home of the King of the Goblins.
The backdrop looks very eye-catching and the cartoon style graphics of the slot and the symbols on the reels works well. All in all this is a very nicely done slot and has plenty of positive points.
What's on the reels?
There are essentially two groups of standard symbols on the reels, plus a couple of other symbols that tend to trigger the main features of the slot game. The first set of symbols are the playing card symbols and these offer the lower pay outs of the slot. There are six of these symbols, from the nine to the ace and they offer wins ranging from 2 coins up to 100 coins.
There are a total of seven higher value symbols on the reels. There are four goblin creatures and two humans and the Goblin King symbols and these offer wins from 8 coins up to a maximum of 800 coins if you land five of the young boy symbols across the reels.
These are not the only symbols on the reels however as there are a number of others that all link in with some of the different bonus features of the slot.
The Wild symbol is the barn owl, and this replaces any of the standard symbols outlined above to help create winning pay lines. However, what is nice about this Wild symbol is that it is an Expanding Wild, which will expand to cover the reels to perhaps form additional winning lines on the same spin. However, the Wild will only expand on the reel when it is possible to form additional wins from the spin.
Additionally, all wins that are completed by a Wild will pay a 2x multiplier on the standard value win.
Free Spins features
The Scatter symbol in the game is the Crystal Ball symbol and if you land three or more of these across the reels then you trigger a Free Spins bonus round. Three Scatters will land you 5 Free Spins, four Scatters will see you gain 10 Free Spins while landing all five will earn you the maximum 15 Free Spins.
During Free Spins, if you land three or more of the Scatter symbol on the reels, you will trigger an additional set of Free Spins. In addition, there is an additional symbol on the reels during your Free Spins, the Super Round Icon.
Land three or more of these and you trigger 5 Super Round spins, during which there are only the 7 character symbols and the Drop Icon (which we will explain more about below) on the reels, which significantly increases your chances of a bigger value win.
Other bonus features
The other bonus feature on the slot is triggered from the Drop Icon. This is the highest paying symbol in the game offering a prize of 1,000 coins for five landed across the reels. However, if you land three or more of these symbols on the reels, then you will trigger the Drop Icon feature.
This is essentially a Rolling Reels feature where the Drop Icons will disappear after they have triggered a win, and symbols from above will fall down into the vacated spaced, which can then potentially trigger additional wins from the same spin.
In addition, during the Super Round Free Spins bonus, any drop icons you land will trigger an increasing multiplier bonus with each win that they trigger. So your initial win will pay 1x the amount, however a second win on the Drop Icons disappearing will increase the bonus to 2x the amount and this increases up to 7x the standard amount.
Best feature of the Lucky Labyrinth slot
The Lucky Labyrinth slot is packed with features and they work nicely together in the game. The premise for the slot is good fun and somewhat unusual too and I do like that aspect of the game. In terms of the features though, I think that the best feature is the Super Round as the lack of lower value symbols, combined with the increasing multiplier wins on the Drop Icons bonus feature means that you can land some sizeable wins in the game when you can trigger both features. However, it can be difficult to hit them given the relatively small amount of spins you get in the Super Round.
What does the Lucky Labyrinth slot lack?
The only thing I think that the Lucky Labyrinth slot does lack is a base game random bonus feature. I think that would have helped keep the base game more exciting, which can be an issue when you are trying to land a bonus playing through the base game. The fact that so many of the base game wins are small (especially if you are playing the maximum 30 lines per spin) also means that the base game would have benefited from a feature that would have increased the value on some of these wins or allowed you to win a slightly larger amount on occasion.
The Lucky Labyrinth is an interesting slot. It has an unusual theme, a nice back story and is well presented. The slot itself can get a little repetitive in the base game at times as the bonus features are hard to trigger, despite there being so many of them. Of the bonus features, the Free Spins bonus is the one that is the most financially beneficial as it offers access to the Super Round, which is when the bigger money can be won. The Drop Icon game however adds a nice touch to things and the Expanding Wild does help land some extra value wins in the base game, but these tend not to be huge. Overall, this is a feature packed slot that plays nicely.
