More Game Themes
I have often wondered what inspired the Pinata. While we see this as a generally harmless game where people are blindfolded and attempt to thump a hollowed out object filled with sweets and other goodies in the hope of smashing it and releasing the contents therein, there is no denying that whacking a rather sad looking donkey with a big stick is not in the best of taste.
Still, donkeys have not had the best of times throughout history in Latin America over the years, so with that heritage it is not surprising and nobody seems to mind that donkeys, as well as an assortment of other animals can now be filled with sweeties and bashed about the head a bit in the name of fun.
Anyway, I'm digressing a little as we have a new Pinata based game awaiting our attention. It is from Rival Gaming and it is called Popping Pinatas, which I think is probably a very appropriate name, given that this is the entire reason for playing the game.
So how does this newly released slot on what is a surprisingly popular theme for slots stand up to scrutiny? Does this hit the donkey firmly on the head, or is it a swing and a miss? We decided to take a look to find out.

Presentation
The presentation on the Popping Pinata's slot is very bright and colorful and the game has been designed to look especially Mexican, even down to having two mariachi band members, Pancho and Pepe, stood either side of the reels, as well as the occasional appearance by the lovely Flamenco dance Catalina.
The soundtrack to the slot is, as you would expect, based on Mexican mariachi music and it fits in well with the overall feel of the game. The graphics are in a cartoon style, but are bright, cheerful and colorful and they do catch your eye.
Admittedly, things are a bit stereotypical in terms of the images used on the slot, but there's no denying that the slot gets you in the mood for a bit of a Fiesta, rather than a Siesta, and the fact you have two different game modes, day and night, which determine which of the two bonus games you play, also gives the slot a little more depth.
What's on the reels?
There are a total of eleven standard symbols on the reels and all are based on a broad Mexican theme. The three lowest value symbols are the different colored peppers, which in order of value from lowest to highest are the green, orange and yellow peppers. There is then a bottle of tequila, a pair of maracas, a sombrero, a guitar and finally a trumpet and these are the lower to mid value symbols on the reels.
The three higher value symbols are all linked to the three characters that form part of the narrative of the slot and these are Pepe and Pancho, who both offer the same level of payouts, and lastly Catalina, who is by far the highest paying of the symbols, offering up to 2,500x your bet and with it the largest value win in the game.
There are some other symbols on the reels that link in with the main bonus features of the slot as we will explore below.
Wild features
There are two different Wild symbols on the reels. These are the dog symbol and the toucan symbol, and both can be used to replace any of the other standard symbols in the game to create a winning line.
As Wilds can be landed on all five reels, you can also earn a payout for each Wild if landed across the reels on one of the active pay lines and of the two, the dog is the slightly higher value payout, offering a top prize of 1,000x your bet, while the toucan symbol (I am sure it is a toucan and not a puffin) offers wins of up to 750x your bet.
Unfortunately, there are no multipliers received with any wins assisted by a Wild landing on the reels for you.
Free Spins features
There is no Free Spins bonus feature on the Popping Pinatas slot. The main bonus features are described in the section below.
Other bonus features
There are two bonus features in the game and which one you access depends on whether you are playing the game in night mode, or day mode (you start in night mode). When in Night Mode, you need to land three of the Missing Dog poster symbols on the reels to trigger the first bonus game which is the Find Pequeno game.
Here Catalina's little chihuahua dog, Pequeno, has gone missing and you need to click on the different items located around the screen to try and find him. Somewhat frustratingly, if you don't find the dog, then you don't win a cash prize in the game, but if you do, then you win a prize which is a multiplier of your total bet.
At the end of this game, you may have a chance to play the Day Round bonus, which you can also access when the slot is in Day mode by landing three or more of the Pinata Scatter symbols. When you do, you are taken to a bonus game where you can choose to hit a number of Pinatas to reveal a cash prize.
When the game is in day mode, you then switch back to night mode when you land three or more of Skull Scatters on the reel, which puts the game in night-time mode and will also give you a chance to play the Find Pequeno bonus round once again.
Best feature of the Popping Pinatas slot
Although the slot doesn't have a Free Spins bonus, which is something of a glaring omission to be honest, the actual slot itself is a decent lower variance game that will give you plenty of fun over a longer period of time, even with a relatively small budget. The bonus games that are part of the slot are a bit hit and miss, with the Pinata bonus, in my view, far more appealing as it will at least guarantee you a win, whereas the Find Pequeno round doesn't.
What does the Popping Pinatas slot lack?
The main omission on the Popping Pinatas slot is of course the fact that it doesn't have a clear Free Spins bonus round. The two bonus games that are on the slot are imaginative, but I do feel that the Find Pequeno round should offer the player at least some kind of win, rather than triggering it and the player winning nothing as this is hugely deflating to a player, especially when they have invested time in triggering the bonus.
Conclusion
Popping Pinatas is a decent and cheery new game from Rival that is the first to be launched under its unified banner, although we are not quite sure what that means. The bright graphics and cheery sound make the slot fun to play and although there is a significant omission with the lack of a Free Spins bonus round, the fact that there are a number of Wilds, and a couple of bonus games does somewhat alleviate that. Guaranteeing even a small win in the Find Pequeno bonus game would have given the slot a higher score in my view as it is a horrible feeling to trigger a bonus feature and then receive nothing for it. That apart, this is a clever and imaginative slot that is ideally suited to lower stakes players and those who prefer lower variance games.
