Do you dream of the good old adventurous days of the Wild West? It was a period that lasted a relatively short time from 1865 to 1895, and it was the age of cowboys, native Indians, gunslingers, pioneers, prospectors, gamblers, and outlaw gangs.
What we do know is that it was a lawless time, where the rule of the gun held sway and where men would be quick to draw for pretty much anything that upset them. All in all, it sounds like a rather scary time to have lived but it is an epic period to set a slot game and that is precisely why Realtime Gaming have set their game Trigger Happy in this period.
This 5-reel slot has a total of 30 non-selectable lines in play and rather than opting for the visceral approach, Realtime Gaming have instead gone for the softer approach, with two rather buxom cowgirls poised either side of the reels to keep you in a spin. The game also features an added bonus of two progressive jackpot prizes, which can be worth a considerable amount of loot should you be lucky enough to win them.
Let's take a look at the details of the slot which was released across Realtime Gaming affiliated casinos in March 2019.

Presentation
The presentation of the Trigger Happy slot has been very nicely done. The main reels are in the center of the screen and the Western-styled backdrop, together with the two beautiful ladies either side of the reel, have been realized in glorious detail.
The sounds too are neatly done with the soundtrack typical of what you would expect for the era, but without being too derivative of other slot games or indeed the genre in general. The different parts of the game have different sound triggers and these are recreated nicely and do add a nice atmosphere to the game when playing.
It's easy to follow the main controls of the slot and the wooden style of the reels, does give the game an authentic old west feel. Add to that some cleverly selected symbols on the reels and you have a game that looks and sounds the part.
What's on the reels?
There are a number of symbols on the reels, the first of them being the lower value symbol which are the playing card symbols ranging from the nine through to the ace. Although these are used in many slots, they do fit this theme nicely and for once, do not look out of place on the game.
The higher value symbols in the game are all to do with the Wild West and cowboys or cowgirls for that matter and include items such as a pair of cowboy boots with spurs, a saloon, a trusty horse and a cactus. Again, these symbols are perhaps a little derivative but they have been done differently enough for them to look new and fresh on this particular game.
Alongside these symbols there are a couple of other symbols on the reels, notably the two different Wild symbols and the Scatter and these are the way to access some of the main features of the slot as we shall explore below.
Wild features
There are two Wild symbols in the game, the Red-Haired Cowgirl and the Blonde-Haired Cowgirl. Each of the ladies occupies two reels in the game, with the Red-Haired lady appearing on the first two reels, while her blonde friend appears on the fourth and fifth reels. These symbols are Stacked Wilds (in more ways than one) and it is possible to land the four reels they occupy stacked with the Wild symbols to land some of the biggest base game wins.
The Wild symbol does not appear on the third reel in the game and obviously as a result of this, there is no prize for landing three or more Wilds across the reels, as you can't actually achieve this in the game itself.
Free Spins features
The Sheriff badge is the in-game Scatter symbol and this appears across the full set of reels and you need to land at least three or more of the badges to receive your bonus of seven free spins.
During Free Spins, there are two possible features that can be activated. The first is based on the red cowgirl and sees her appear as a Wild Scatter in this bonus round offering you the chance to re-trigger the bonus game, or the blonde-haired cowgirl will appear as a Sticky Wild on the fourth and fifth reels.
With relatively few Free Spins to begin with, the best way to land a sizeable prize during Free Spins is to re-trigger the bonus using the red-haired cowgirl feature. When that happens, some sizeable wins are possible throughout the bonus round.
Other bonus features
The other key bonus feature of the Trigger Happy slot is that there are two progressive jackpot prize funds available to be won in the game. The jackpots are the Minor jackpot (which starts at 250.00) and the Major jackpot (which starts at 1,000) and these jackpots are awarded entirely at random, potentially on any spin of the slot to any player.
Of course, the longer the game goes without awarding either of the progressive jackpot features then the more that they can grow in size to become sizeable prizes.
Best feature of the Trigger Happy slot
There are a couple of great features on the Trigger Happy slot game. The two different Wilds are a nice touch and the fact that they are stacked on the four reels they appear on is also a real positive. The Free Spins game is also great but the added feature you trigger is what can make it a very profitable game for you, although it should be noted that the payouts in this part of the game can and do vary quite considerably and can range from the very small to very large.
What does the Trigger Happy slot lack?
There are a couple of small changes I would have liked to have seen on the Trigger Happy slot. The first and most obvious one being the addition of a Wild symbol onto the third reel. Even a single symbol would have given you the option of landing five Wilds across the reels and that would have been a real incentive. I'd also like to have seen a few more Free Spins handed out initially as seven is relatively few, although the fact you can earn considerably more in the bonus part of the game does make this a lesser criticism. Lastly, I'd have liked to have seen a slightly larger top progressive prize as a seed fund of $1,000 isn't a huge amount and in truth, there are slots you can play where you can win more than that in the standard game.
Conclusion
All in all, Trigger Happy is a nicely presented slot that has a number of nice features but which is lacking in a couple of key areas which I think detract a little from the game. I feel the progressives are not sufficiently big enough to make them appealing for players to play, it's certainly no MegaMoolah.com when it comes to progressive jackpot sizes and I think the omission of a Wild on the third reel is a bit of a disappointment. That said there are enough good features to balance these issues out which makes the slot generally enjoyable and certainly playable.
