Ice hockey is a great theme for a slots game. The game is hugely popular in Canada, USA, throughout the Nordics, Russia and Eastern Europe.
Microgaming explored this possibility of the sport being the focus of their next in the series of 243 Ways to Win sporting themed slots hot on the heels of Cricket Star and Football Star and prior to the release of Basketball Star.
If you have played any of these slots before then the Break Away slot will look and play in a very familiar fashion, but that's not a bad thing as the sporting series of slots has always been one of the jewel's in Microgaming's crown.
It's the usual 5x3 reels and as we've already mentioned, there's no individual paylines in operation here but instead the 243 Ways to Win. With these slots it is always the minimum amount to play that is key as to their appeal especially for the smaller stakes player and at 0.50 as the lowest price to get the reels spinning, it isn't the most expensive slot to play, but nor is it the cheapest.
The good news is for medium and higher stakes players you can ramp up the amount you wager to up to 50.00 per spin and that you can fill your wallet with 105,705 coins if you manage to land the maximum possible win in the game.
Furthermore, with a house edge of between 3-4 percent, this is a slot that will keep paying out smaller wins to players to ensure that even those without the biggest of bankrolls can still enjoy a session and the roar of the ice hockey crowd for a decent length of time.
The look of the slot, not to put too fine a point on it, is almost exactly the same as all the other sporting star slot games, just that the symbols have been changed to reflect that Break Away is about ice hockey rather than another sport. What is pleasing is that all the symbols are related to ice hockey in some way, which means none of the somewhat ubiquitous playing card lows are on the reels.
The game-play itself rattles along at a good pace, much like the sport and there's enough regular wins to keep people happy, however this is a slot that is all about the features and once again, all these have been borrowed (for that read, directly copies) from all the other sporting slots in this series.
This is not a bad thing however as the features on these sporting slots are well worth repeating as they bring so much to the game-play.
The first big in game bonus feature is the Stacked Wild feature. This means that the Break Away logo symbol, which is the in game Wild, is stacked on reels 3, 4 and 5. Land Wilds stacked across these reels and you can trigger some of the larger base game wins.
Any time you trigger a win in the base game or the free spins round, you then trigger the Rolling Reels feature. What happens here is that the symbols that form to create the winning line will pay out and then they will disappear, allowing symbols above them to 'roll' down onto the reels. Of course, there is the potential that these symbols can create additional wins if you are lucky (and to be honest, secondary wins following the reels rolling down does not happen too often).
The other big feature in the game is the Free Spins round which is based on the in game scatter symbol the hockey puck. Land three, four or five of these across the reels and you will win either 15, 20 or 25 free spins respectively.
With the Rolling Reels in effect in free spins too, this means that you have the chance of earning multiple wins from a single spin of the reels and while it admittedly doesn't happen that often, there does seem to be more chance of triggering these multiple wins during the free spins round.
Every time you land a rolling reel in succession, you trigger an increasing multiplier which can award you 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x or even 10x the usual payout, depending on how many rolling reel wins you trigger.
Break Away is a polished slot that doesn't offer anything that any of the other sporting star slots offer, however if you fancy the ice hockey theme, then this is one slot worth a closer look.
