WGS Technology are thought to have given their older Mile High slot a bit of an overhaul of late, but in truth I couldn't really find much evidence of that when I gave the game a review.

Based on the notion of the Mile High Club, which for those not in the know, is a club for people who have managed to have sexual relations in the air, the slot features a couple of pilots who are beset with laughter, a buxom hostess and a rather exhausted looking man, who I can only assume is fatigued from his efforts to join the aforementioned exclusive club.

It is all a bit Benny Hill for me, but to be fair, WGS Technology could have made this a bit sleazy, but they have steered well clear of that and instead the slot is rather subtle and focuses on the humor, rather than the erotic and it is all the better for it.

So does the Mile High slot offer you all the benefits you would imagine? We decided to climb aboard to find out.

Presentation

It would be fair to say that the presentation of the Mile High slot is somewhat basic. In its defense, the slot is a bit old, but even for slots of that era, it is a bit of a mess. The graphics are somewhat basic and simplistic and look almost as if they have been ported over from a much earlier slot. The backdrop is non-dynamic and just a sky with clouds and the sun, which is somewhat dull, if fitting to the slot. The only sound are the effects you get on older slots that attempt to make it sound like a slot in a casino. As such, this is perhaps now best viewed as a retro slot.

What's on the reels?

There are a number of different symbols on the reels in the Mile High slot. The lower value symbols are the playing card symbols from the nine through to the Ace. Wins start at 5 coins and can go up to 250 coins for five aces or kings across the reels.

There are four higher value symbols on the reels. A cocktail glass, a passport, a suitcase packed to the brim with clothes and lastly two pilots who are having a good old laugh at the passenger's attempts to join the Mile High club presumably. Wins on these symbols start at just 5 coins but can go up to a sizeable 8,000 coins.

The pilots and suitcase symbols offer low value wins of 5 coins for just two symbols across the reels.

Wild features

There are two Wild symbols on the reels in the Mile High slot, but each is only found on one reel. The male passenger, who has been kissed presumably by the hostess, is the first and he is found on the second reel of the slot. He can substitute for all symbols on the reels apart from the Kiss symbol and the Airplane Scatter.

The hostess is the second Wild symbol and she is found only on the fourth reel. She also can substitute for all symbols apart from the Kiss symbol or the Airplane Scatter.

Free Spins features

The trigger to the Free Spins bonus round are the Airplane Scatters and you need to land three or more of these across the reels in order to trigger the Select A Play feature. You will also win a cash prize for two or more Scatters landed in the game, ranging from 2x your bet to 200x your bet.

Here you get to pick from three different Free Spins games, each of which has its own set of bonuses in play.

  • 12 Free Spins with all Man or Hostess Wild wins doubled. Wins with a Man and Hostess Wild together are doubled to 4x the standard win.
  • 8 Free Spins with all Man or Hostess Wild wins at 3x the standard. Win with a Man and Hostess Wild together and that becomes 9x the standard win.
  • 5 Free Spins with all Man and Hostess Wild wins at 4x the standard. Win with a Man and Hostess Wild together and all wins are 16x the standard amount.

What is pleasing is that during Free Spins both the Man and Hostess Wild symbols will expand when landed on the reels to cover their respective reel in full. You can also re-trigger the Free Spins bonus round by landing three Scatters once again and when you do, you can select which of the three games to play in your next bonus round once the one you have played is completed.

Other bonus features

The other bonus feature on the Mile High Slot is the Kiss Kiss Kiss Bonus which is triggered when you land three of the Kiss symbols across the middle three reels in any position.

The bonus is a simple cash prize, which is calculated as a multiple of your initial bet. You can win up to 50x your bet in the bonus, although generally the wins are smaller than that. A selection of Kisses are shown on the screen and you need to select one to reveal your prize.

If you select the Win All symbol, then you will win all the cash values hidden behind the other Kisses on the Screen, so this offers you the best opportunity of a big win in this bonus game.

Best feature of the Mile High slot

The best feature of the Mile High slot is definitely the Free Spins bonus round as this is where you can pick up some of the best value wins in the game. You do need to have real patience to access the bonus though as it can take a very long time to land in the base game. The Kiss Kiss bonus is a nice addition to, but it seldom pays out the larger value wins (say over 20x your bet) and it too can take a while to trigger.

What does the Mile High slot lack?

In truth, it lacks an awful lot. The presentation is incredibly simplistic. The base game is tough, even for a higher variance game and it is a real slog to play through. The bonus features are hard to trigger and difficult to earn big money from. I feel there is not a lot to attract any mid to lower stakes gamer to give the slot a try, which is a bit of a shame.

Conclusion

I always think higher variance slots struggle to find the right balance at times and I think this is the case with the Mile High slot. It simply is too tough for most players to enjoy as wins are so few and far between. I can see hardcore higher variance gamblers enjoying this, especially those that like to wager large amounts of money to try and land a jackpot prize, but it is not a game I would come back to play having seen how little it can reward players, even on a fairly lengthy session of spins.

Ratings

  • Presentation: 9 / 20 - The Mile High slot may have received a little update from WGS Technology a little while back but this 2011 release is still starting to show its age. The sound is basically slots sound effects with no background music, which is rather dull and the backdrop of the slot is a very basic sky scene, which while fitting the theme of the slot, is hardly the most awe inspiring as it is static and rather uninteresting. I feel a bit harsh rating it so low given it is an older slot, but it is sorely lacking compared to more modern releases.
  • Game-play: 10 / 20 - The Mile High slot is a high variance game and that makes it very volatile at times. You can play through seemingly endless spins without even having a sniff of a win at times and then at others, you can cluster good sized wins together. In truth, the game play's appeal depends on whether you like higher variance slots that play precisely that way. If you do, then this will be a good choice for you. If not, then you will find other options better suited to your gaming preferences elsewhere.
  • Bonus Features: 12 / 20 - Things look up a little when you look at the bonus features on the Mile High slot. There is a decent Free Spins bonus round, which can be rewarding, but which also can take forever to try and trigger at times. There is also a special Kiss Kiss bonus round, which awards you a random cash prize of up to 50x your bet but which is usually much lower. Overall, decent bonuses, but nothing to get too excited about.
  • Entertainment Factor: 10 / 20 - In truth, there's not a huge amount of excitement to be had on the Mile High slot. The game is an older style slot game that doesn't have many of the bangs and whistles you get on modern games. The jackpot can be worthwhile for higher rollers but there isn't much for lower stakes players to get excited about. Even the brief hilarity at the slot being about the Mile High Club doesn't last for long.
  • Play Value: 8 / 20 - This is a high variance slot and it does like to let you know it. You can win some pretty big amounts in the base game, but usually you will have to spin and spin and spin again before you even get close to a win. The Free Spins are also very tough to land and with there being two Wilds one on the second and one on the fourth reel, there's not much respite from the losing spins with Wild symbols either.
  • Overall 49 / 100 - Mile High may be one of the slots that was flying high in the charts of most popular games from WGS Technology in recent times, but I struggle to see why. I think the company has released some much better games over recent times and this older relic, even though it has apparently been updated slightly, doesn't really cut the mustard nowadays against other games. There are better ways to join the Mile High club than this in my view.

Good Luck!
