The presentation of the Scruffy Scallywags slot is excellent with the setting being on a pirate boat, although judging by the state of the holy sails, it is one that has perhaps seen better days.
The reels are central on the screen with all the main controls at the bottom of the screen. I have to say that aesthetically, it isn't the easiest on the eye with the controls somewhat cluttered together at the foot of the screen. A nice touch though is the ships wheel moves on the Spin button as you play.
The musical accompaniment is particularly jaunty and does convey the mood and theme of the slot well. The progressive jackpot (and the accompanying mini jackpot) is displayed at the top of the screen and the slot tends to play out as a more medium variance game, although there is a nice mix of wins available and you can land some bigger value wins alongside the more common lower value wins.
What's on the reels?
There are a number of different symbols on the reels and all of them are based on the pirate theme, which is nice as it means none of the somewhat ubiquitous playing card low symbols. Instead, what you have here are four lower value symbols that all pay out from 5 to 50 coins for landing three, four or five of these symbols across the reels. They are the map with the dagger through it, a collection of cannon balls, a musket and dagger and a cannon.
There are four medium value symbols that pay from 10 coins to 75 coins in wins. These are the treasure chest, the ship, the pirate with the green head wear and the pirate drinking a pint of frothy beer.
Alongside these symbols are the two higher value symbols, which is the pirate holding the key and the pirate captain symbols, both of which offer payouts from 25 coins up to the maximum base game jackpot of 200 coins.
However these are not the only symbols on the reels, there are two Wilds, plus a scatter and bonus symbol too and we'll explain what all these do in the sections below.
There are two Wild symbols in the game and the first of these is the Anchor symbol and the second is the Gold coin symbol which has the tentacles of an octopus draped around it. In both cases, these symbols can substitute for any of the low, medium or high value symbols to help create additional winning pay lines.
Furthermore, if you land five of either of the Wild symbols on a pay line you will also trigger the 200 coin base game jackpot, with smaller cash prizes available for landing three or four of the symbols on a pay line.
While the anchor wild operates in the standard way, the octopus wild is slightly different. In that when you land one of these symbols on the reels, an octopus will appear and turn random other symbols on the reels Wild too, which can increase the value of your win. Up to five symbols can be turned wild when the bonus appears and it appears throughout the slot and in all the bonus features.
Free Spins features
Land three or more of the Rum symbol across the reels and you will trigger 15 free spins. During free spins all prizes earned are automatically subject to a 2x multiplier and each time you land an additional Rum scatter in the bonus round, you receive an additional free spin added to your total.
The free spins bonus cannot be re-triggered from within the bonus game, but you can win additional spins as outlined above.
Other bonus features
There are three other bonus features on the Scruffy Scallywags slot and the first of these is the Compass Bonus. Any time you land a Compass feature anywhere on the reels, this bonus will trigger and it starts with a new screen loading up.
Here you will see a compass and on it are a number of prizes including cash amounts of 10x, 20x and 50x your total bet, A 2x multiplier for your current spin winnings, a 5x multiplier for your current spin winnings, 3 Re-Spins, 5 Re-spins and 10 Re-spins.
The compass will spin and land on one of these items and when it does you will receive the bonus that the pointer lands on. If you land this bonus during a free spins round and win more free spins, these will be added to your current total of free spins remaining.
Another feature of the slot is the progressive jackpot prize. This is actually two prizes, the standard progressive and a mini jackpot prize and either can be won at the end of any spin on the reels entirely at random.
The final feature of the slot is the Gamble option which is available when you win a cash amount in the base game. Here you pick from four cards to see if you can pick a higher card than the dealer. Do so, and you double your winnings, fail to do so and you will lose your money. You can use the gamble repeatedly to gamble up your winnings if you are lucky enough.
Best feature of the Scruffy Scallywags slot
Although the Scruffy Scallywags slot is packed with features, they are a bit hit and miss at times. On the compass bonus for example, too many times you seem to land the lowest value 2x your current win bonus, rather than any of the other bonuses which may offer a better chance of a bigger value win.
However what is clearly evident is that the amount of bonuses and ways to win on the Scruffy Scallywags slot means the game-play is never dull and you can always trigger additional bonuses as you play and it is this variation in the game-play and sheer number of bonus features that is the best feature of the slot.
What does the Scruffy Scallywags slot lack?
I don't think that the Scruffy Scallywags slot lacks anything in terms of content for a slot. All the key aspects of a top notch slot are present, but what I do feel it lacks is a bit of excitement. The base game jackpot of 250 coins isn't huge (unless you play for big money each spin) and the progressive jackpot also isn't the biggest to win either. That means that this isn't a slot that will appeal to big jackpot hunters.
Scruffy Scallywags is a decent slot packed full of features and with plenty of variance in the game-play that will certainly hold your interest initially, however for lower stakes players in particular, this isn't a slot that is going to grab your attention and hold it indefinitely. Chiefly because the amount you can win when playing isn't that big.
Also, the design of the slots main control panel is not the best and it is somewhat cluttered, a real issue if you are playing this game on a smaller-screen device, such as a mobile phone.
