Originally a computer game, the Tomb Raider franchise set a new standard for what to expect from computer games, spawning a highly successful film series and of course, a duo of slots.

Not only did it inspire a film franchise, but also a couple of spin off slots and while the first Tomb Raider slot was a great success, the second game, Tomb Raider Secret of the Sword delivers an even more absorbing experience for the slot enthusiast and quickly became one of the most popular online slots following its release.

The first thing to note is that there is a difference between the slot if you play on a desktop or a mobile. The desktop version is a fixed five reel 30 payline slot, with five reels and 15 paylines available via mobile. Spins start at just 0.75 on the mobile game and you can increase the size and number of coins wagered on each line to play for more money each spin if you prefer, up to a maximum of 37.50 per spin.

If you have played Tomb Raider Secret of the Sword on desktop, then on mobile, you would have noticed some significant differences. Most notably the sound on mobile is much sparser than the desktop version, but what is important, the slots game-play, remains very much intact. This means that while the mobile version is different to the desktop version, it is not inferior, however some cut down effects can be seen when compared to the desktop version. For example the sound effects are slightly different on the mobile version of the game and the Rolling Reels feature that is major part of the desktop game hasn't been ported over onto mobile.

Perhaps to compensate for this, Microgaming have tweaked the mobile game to hit more free spins? We are not sure, but what we found in trialing the mobile version is that we did tend to hit free spins a little more frequently when compared to the desktop version.

In most all other aspects the games are almost identical and both offer players an exhilarating experience as you follow the latest adventure of the erstwhile Tomb Raider herself, Lara Croft.

The key to Tomb Raider slots is that it remains faithful to the characters that inspired them and that is precisely what Microgaming created with the second version, the Tomb Raider Secret of the Sword. All the fun, pace and enjoyment from the first slot is there in abundance in this second incarnation in the series.

One of the most exciting aspects of the slot is that there is a quest element to it, where you travel to different exotic locations to uncover the hidden sword fragments. This adds a great deal to the slot and means that it offers players the feeling that they are playing to uncover something, exactly like a plot line from one of the films.

There's the usual mix of high and low symbols across the reel but what is striking about the game is how many different features there are to enjoy, including a randomly triggered bonus mode that really does add to the excitement.

The base game is designed in the distinctive Tomb Raider livery and uses the same font as the original game. The playing card low symbols from 10 through to Ace are the low symbols on the reels, with a number of Tomb Raider-themed icons and characters as the higher value symbols across the reels. The jackpot is a large 135,000 coins which is a significant amount even if you don't play at higher value stakes per spin.

The first thing to make note of in this game is the Wild symbol. This is the Tomb Raider logo, which substitutes in the game for all symbols apart from the Bonus Idol and Scatter symbols. The more you land of these across the reels, the more chance you have of hitting a better paying winning line.

In terms of bonus games, one of the best bonus features in Tomb Raider is the Super Mode feature, which can be activated in the game at any time. When this happens, you receive five free spins and there are additional Wild symbols placed on the reels to help you try and land a decent sized win from the bonus.

This is not the only bonus game available on the slot however as you can also activate the Global Adventure Bonus game by landing the Passport symbol across the reels. This is the part of the game that offers you a chance at the biggest jackpot as you choose from five different locations and from each location, choose artifacts to reveal bonuses that can include hidden treasure (in the form of cash, a multiplier or a choice of another shoot out bonus when this game concludes), cash amounts, a fragment of the sword and a trap.

Trigger the trap and the bonus round ends, however land a piece of the sword and if you can collect all fragments from the bonus game you'll earn yourself a fantastic cash bonus on top of any other winnings you may have accrued.

Of course, much of the excitement of any of these types of slot comes in the Free Spins and Tomb Raider Secret of the Sword is no different. The Scatter symbol is the feisty heroine Lara Croft and you need to land her symbol across three, four or all five reels in order to trigger the free spins round. Here you receive 10 free spins and the great news is that every time you hit a winning payline, you will receive five times the stated win.

Fans of the Tomb Raider franchise should certainly enjoy the Secret of the Sword slot game, available on desktop and mobile.
