Can you really develop a strategy for playing slots?

It is hard to underestimate just how important slots are to casinos both in the real world and in the online casino industry. Nowadays, slots players generate as much as 70 percent, in some cases considerably more, of the revenue of the casino.

That change in demographic has brought with it a change in perception for the slot player. In the olden days, slots players were very much viewed as the 'poor cousins' of table gamers, often some casinos didn't offer them the same free drinks or complimentary tickets they would hand to other guests.

That is not the case now.

Of course, more money generated from slots means that more people are playing slots and of course, that means that the slot industry is in rude health. Almost every month top companies, such as Microgaming, will have at least one new slot hitting the casinos ready for players to play and these new slots offer new and exciting ways to win you money.

Because along with enjoying yourself, winning cash is the reason many people opt to play slots.

However, the dichotomy of slots is although they are the most popular form of casino entertainment, they are also the type of casino game that tends to offer the player the least chance of success.

All modern online slots are operated by a random number generator. By that very definition, the random element of this means that it is almost impossible to come up with a strategy to be more successful at the slots.

That is, almost impossible.

For as much as there is no way you can predict the outcome of a truly random event, such as the numbers selected by a random number generator powering an online slot, there are certain other parameters which are adjustable by the software developers or casino, which can mean there are several subtle differences between slots.

And it is these differences which allow you to form a strategy which gives you a better chance of slots success.

Does this mean I will win more often?

This is the main issue and the answer to that question in general terms is that you can't predict that - but what you will do by carefully selecting which slots to play and how to play them, you will give yourself a better chance of winning on each spin.

So are these 'get rich quick' slot strategies that are '100 percent guaranteed to work' just a con?

Absolutely. Unless there is an error in the random number generator which makes the outcomes of each selection predictable in advance, then there is no way that any person can correctly identify trends and patterns in a game as each spin is truly random.

As strange as it may sound, you are as likely to win the progressive jackpot on the very next spin after it has been won, as you are on a spin a year after it has been won. Extraneous factors such as who is playing, how long it has been since the jackpot was won, how much money the slot has raised are not part of the random number process.

Given that these random number generators are rigorously tested over millions and millions of spins by agencies like eCOGRA, it is fair to say that any faulty slot game with a predictable pattern of play would be quickly discovered and not awarded a certificate until the random number generator was fixed.

So what does work?

If you accept that you can't use pattern recognition, the fact that slots can run 'hot' or 'cold' as a measure of probability of success due to the random nature of the modern slot, then you are instead left with your own intuition and intelligence to help guide you.

The first thing to look for on any slot you wish to play is the payout percentage. This gives you an idea of roughly how much the slot pays out to players out of the money it takes in. Anything around 97 percent is a high payout percentage with anything around 93-95 percent an average amount and anything less than 93 percent a small amount.

The first thing to note about payout percentages are that they are not saying that if you put in 100, you should win about 95 back from the machine. What they tell you is that over an extended period of time (hundreds of thousands, if not millions of spins) that the slot pays out 90 percent+ of whatever money it takes in.

However, in that period you will find a significant percentage of those winnings are taken up by the bigger winners on the slot. Which leaves a relatively small pot for those winnings that you pick up almost every time you play.

So what you want to look at here is ensuring you play a slot with a high payout percentage, but also one that has low volatility. Some casinos won't tell you if a slot is high or low volatility, but check out some reviews and you'll quickly find out.

High volatility is a slot which doesn't pay out often, but which does pay out big money less frequently, such as the big progressive slots with their multi-million jackpots. Low volatility slots are those that pay out more often, but tend to pay out smaller sums. These lower volatility are the best slots to target if you are looking for more chance of a payout when you play, as you won't receive a huge payout, but they do payout more often.

Another key skill to help you succeed on the slots is effective bankroll management. The maxim that you can't win if you haven't got the money to play is certainly a wise one when applied to slots. In short, the more spins you can have for your money, the more chance you have of landing a win. Therefore, you want to make the most of your money by playing at a level which suits your bankroll. If you have 200 available, don't play 10 spins at 20 per spin, instead play 100 spins at 2 per spin, or even 1000 spins at 0.20 per spin.

The one caveat to add here is when you have a choice of the number of lines to play in a slot, in these circumstances it is always wisest to play all the lines. It is better to play 10 lines at 0.10 per line than 1 line at 1 per line.

That is not to say you should always play the smaller denomination coins, but that simply how many spins you play and how much you play for should be governed by your available bankroll.

Lastly, the final piece of advice I can give you is to take advantage of as many free spins offers as you can find. Any free spin deals, bonus cash, deposit bonuses will give you additional cash to play with. Even if you have a play through requirement, if you hit the big one playing free spins, you'll have more than enough to reach that requirement and still leave enough for a nice withdrawal.

Good luck and we hope the reels line up fortuitously for you!
