2016 promises to be a big year for spooks and spectres; first off the brand new re-invigorated Ghostbusters franchise will see the release of a new movie with an all-new female cast replacing Bill Murray and co from the original. Secondly, you can bust a few ghosts yourself, as well as earn a nice fat payout, by hitting the jackpot on the fantastic new Peek-a-Boo slot!
The Peek-a-Boo slot was released back in October, perfectly timed for Halloween, but such is its popularity that we think it will be a star performer at casinos throughout 2016 and beyond.
Peek a Boo is one of those new breed of slots that offers a very different prospect in the free spins round, including an extra line of symbol sand 1024 ways to win on every spin, compared to the base game (which has 40 paylines in operation at any one time).
The paylines are not selectable in the base game, though you can spin for just 0.01 per payline, meaning the cheapest spin costs 0.40, but you can increase your wager up to a maximum bet of 100.00 for the higher rollers.
The basics don't really make the game sound as exciting to play as it actually is, so let's start to get into the more enjoyable aspects by taking a closer look at the theme.
As you would expect, the theme is ghosts and ghouls and also a small boy who uses his own ghost-busting equipment to capture the ghosts on screen when he appears on the middle reel. This is a crucial aspect of the slot as it is this, rather than the usual scatter symbols, that will trigger the 1024 Ways to Win Free Spins round.
The great thing is that each time you land the child on the third reel, each ghost he captures will not only contribute towards triggering the free spins, but will also earn you a cash award.
The rest of the symbols across the reels are based on the broad theme of Halloween, with sweeties and candy operating as the in game low symbols, while the various ghosts are the higher symbols in the game and award the larger payouts.
Let's look at some of the bigger features by beginning with free spins. As we've already mentioned, landing the ghost-hunting child on the third reel allows them to collect ghosts using their special machine and once the child has collected between ten and 13 ghosts, then they trigger the free spins round.
In the free spins round, the cash value of each ghost you have collected is paid to you as a starting point. For every ghost you have managed to collect between 10 and 13, you are given one free spin. However, during free spins, an additional line of symbols appears across the reels and the number of paylines increases massively from 40 to a huge 1024 ways to win.
A new feature during free spins is the Spooky Reels feature. This is triggered when you land a three symbol win across the first three reels. When this is achieved but you don't land the same symbol on reel 4, then Spooky Reels kicks in and re-spins reels four and five to give you an additional chance at landing a four or even five of a kind win.
Better still, if you land four symbols across the first four reels, but not the fifth, then Spooky Reels will just re-spin the fifth reel giving you a chance at the much bigger five of a kind win.
Yet that's not all, during free spins you will see that the Wild symbols (the Peek-a-Boo logo) will be stacked 12 symbols high on reels four and five, which of course increases your chances of landing a much bigger win.
If there is one disappointing aspect to the free spins section, it is that there isn't a multiplier available. All wins are paid at the same 1x rate as in the base game and it would have perhaps been a bit friendlier for players if they had at least the chance of triggering a multiplier during free spins, or received a multiplier bonus automatically when triggered.
This is a small niggle however as when it comes to playing the game, Peek-A-Boo plays quite beautifully. The game rattles along at a frantic pace and you'll soon become engrossed following the hero as he collects the ghosts to trigger the free spins. Just remember, you'll need a decent sized bankroll at 0.40 per spin if you are smaller stakes player to enjoy the game to its full potential.
Another lovely aspect of the game is the sound. On some slots, the sound is very much an afterthoughts, but on Peek-a-Boo, it enhances the game play with spooky sound effects and other in-game sounds and music to help keep the player engrossed in the on-screen action.
With the chance to win 8,000 your base game bet, this is a game that does offer big rewards, but it is more a slot that people will really enjoy playing, happy with smaller scale wins, rather than play in the hope of landing a massive win.
