The eagerly anticipated release of the latest film in the Terminator franchise of films, hit box offices around the world earlier this summer with Arnold Schwarzenegger returning to reprise a role he first played over thirty years previously.

Terminator Genisys is reported to be the first in a three-part series of films that will tell the next chapter in the story. This billion-dollar franchise has seen five previous films released prior to Terminator Genisys and yet the story has humble, almost comical beginnings.

The Terminator (1984)

When a director has a vision for a film and has faith it will be a hit, then there is little you can do to dissuade them. An aspiring director known as James Cameron had devised and developed an idea, alongside a couple of other writer friends, of a science fiction film about a robot sent back in time.

Having finally got a meeting with a Hollywood movie mogul, Cameron enlisted the help of friend, actor Lance Henriksen, who dressed up as the robot and burst into the offices minutes before Cameron was due to appear.

The stunt, while initially shocking to those gathered worked. Cameron walked away with $4m in his pocket (which was increased to $6.5m afterwards) to help him produce the film, which was now called The Terminator.

Inspired casting helped with Arnold Schwarzenegger, originally auditioned for the role of Kyle Reese (originally played by Michael Biehn), taking on the role of the Terminator and Linda Hamilton taking on the key role of Sarah Connor.

Cameron's story, combined with his fantastic eye as a director ensured that the Terminator was one of the surprise and biggest hits of 1984. The film also gained popularity in the emerging video rental market in following years (much like Blade Runner) and as such, clamour for a sequel was growing.

Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991)

Seven years after the first film and armed with a massive $94m budget (more than three times the cost of a usual motion picture at that time), James Cameron brought to the screen one of the most groundbreaking Science Fiction films ever made. Terminator 2: Judgement Day saw Schwarzenegger and Hamilton return in their roles from the first film, with Robert Patrick taking on the role of the fearsome T-1000.

The T-1000 was originally conceived by Cameron for the first film, but despite imagining a Terminator made of liquid metal, he felt at the time special effects were not up to the task to represent his vision accurately on film, so his idea was shelved.

By 1991 however, the technology existed for Cameron to realise his dream and this incredible film set a new standard for special effects in cinema, as well as adding another gripping chapter to the Terminator Story.

Set several years after the first film, the film sees Schwarzenegger return to Los Angeles, this time as Sarah Connor's teenage son, John, protector from the fearsome T-1000.

Terminator 2 has rightly been hailed as one of the best action and science fiction films of all time and along with its predecessor, are rightly regarded as classics of the genre.

Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003)

The third in the series of Terminator Films did not involve the original creator and director of the first, James Cameron and it is fair to say on hindsight, that this definitely affected the film.

While Arnold Schwarzenegger returned in the role of the T-800, the next Terminator sent back in time was the T-X, this time a female machine played by Kristianna Loken. The film also starred Nick Stahl as the grown up John Connor and Claire Danes as Kate Brewster.

The third film in the series saw an upgrade in terms of the Terminator villain and also some notable action sequences, but the elements that Cameron brought to the first film were clearly missing and as such, many felt that this was a somewhat unfortunate ending to the series.

Terminator: Salvation (2009)

In 2009, Director McG was announced as being the man in control of the fourth film in the series. However, unlike the first three films, which were set between 1984 and 2004, the new film was set in 2018 and focused on the war between humans and Skynet.

The film starred Christian Bale as John Connor, with young Russian actor Anton Yelchin as the young Kyle Reese. Australian actor Sam Worthington plays a new character known simply as Marcus, a former death row inmate who signed his body over to medical research following his execution in 2003.

The action is set 14 years after Judgement Day and features Worthington's character as a hybrid human/terminator crossover.

While again notable for some outstanding special effects and not a traditional sequel in that it did not follow on from events in Terminator 3, but took place along the same timeline just many years later, Terminator Salvation was a very different film to those preceding it, perhaps best summed up by Arnold Schwarzenegger who declined to appear in the film and stated that it was “awful. It tried hard, not that they didn't try, the acting and everything, it missed the boat”.

Terminator: Genisys (2015)

It seemed the Terminator series had run its course with the promising but ultimately disappointing Salvation, until fans heard that a new film was set for release, one that James Cameron had been consulted on and which would once again feature Arnold in the iconic role.

The film is of course, this year's Terminator Genisys which takes place along a different timeline to the first series of films, where a Terminator was sent back through time to protect the child Sarah Connor when aged 9.

The Terminator, which she calls Pops, protects Sarah for years before the arrival of another T-1000 Terminator. However the film then ups the gears with not one but two brand new Terminator's putting in an appearance, with a shocking plot twist thrown in for good measure.

Terminator Genisys is reportedly closer to the original films than the third or fourth installment, which will please fans, but whether it stands alongside those two masterpieces as the shining stars of the Terminator franchise, only time will tell.
