A couple of months ago, an Old West themed slot was released. Only instead of a group of macho cowboys or native Americans taking the lead role, the game is based on a trio of buxom sharpshooting ladies, who gave their name to the slot, Pistoleras.
Of course, when you hear the name Pistoleras, you have an image of three beautiful and buxom ladies armed with pistols or other such fearsome weaponry and who are adept at using these weapons, as much as their charms, to get their way.
However, while one translation of Pistoleras is that of a holster, or a gun belt, there is another anatomical term which when translated into English means 'flabby thighs'! I'm pretty sure the game developer Microgaming meant the former, rather than the latter when coming up with the name for the slot, as there's not a flabby thigh anywhere to be found on any of the ladies.
So apart from the unusual name, what else does an initial look at Pistoleras reveal. Well, first off, it immediately reminds the player of some other Microgaming slots where women have taken on the traditionally male role. Girls With Guns is a perfect example of another slot where the action hero, in the best Lara Croft and Ripley style, is a kick-ass female.
So kudos to Microgaming for trying to empower women in the slot industry and having feisty role models, although it has to be said that their proclivity for wearing somewhat low-cut tops does diminish their role as female role models, though it does help to keep your eyes on the reels.
The first thing you notice about Pistoleras is that the slot plays in a very similar way to most of Microgaming's latest releases. It is a 25-payline slot but the paylines are not selectable, which means that the smallest bet to get the reels spinning is just 0.25. That's not a great price though and you can really ramp up the amount you want to bet to a whopping 250.00 per spin if you are a high roller.
That's a massive range to play and this means that Pistoleras is a great choice if you want to play for just micro-stakes, or if you want to ramp up the value and play for considerably more on every spin.
The look of the game is somewhat sumptuous with a rather attractive purple background to the reels and on the reels, all the high and low symbols are brightly coloured, with red and purple being the dominant colours.
The low symbols in the game are the usual playing card lows. Land between three and five of these across any of the single paylines and you can win between 50.00 or 1200 coins (assuming you are playing for the 250 top bet). Payouts are scaled depending on how much your initial bet is with each payout a factor of your original bet.
While there isn't a huge amount to be won with the low symbols things increase when you start to talk about the Pistoleras themselves. Land one of the three Pistoleras symbols in three or more spots on a winning payline and you can win from 250 up to 2,500 coins on a spin (with a top spin of 250).
Those payouts don't seem huge but what is true about Pistoleras is that when you play it, it is very much a low volatile slot, which means that while the payouts tend not to be massive, you do tend to win relatively frequently thanks to the number of paylines in operation.
Of course, one of the key features to help you trigger a winning payline is the in Game Wild symbol, which is the Pistoleras logo. Any Wild used to complete a winning payline will substitute for any high or low symbol and the great news is that paylines completed by a Wild all pay out at 3x the original payline.
So if you complete a 5-symbol payline with the top ranked Pistoleras lady, instead of a 2,500 coin payout, you'll receive a 7,500 coin payout, which is better but a smaller amount than is available on some other games.
The big money comes when you land successive Wilds across a payline. Two Wilds sees a payout of 200 coins, three sees 1500 coins awarded, four sees 3,000 coins and land all five on a payline for the biggest base game jackpot of 10,000 coins.
It is also worth noting at this point that all the Pistoleras are stacked on the reels, so it is possible to land multiple wins if you can land stacked Pistoleras across the reels.
There are two different Scatter features in the game. The first is accessed by the Scatter Coach which pays out between 250 coins and 25,000 coins (again based on a max bet of 250 coins) if you land between 2 and 5 Scatter Coach symbols across the reels.
Land three, four or five of these symbols not only triggers a payout, but also 15, 20 or 25 free spins, during which all your wins are multiplied by 3x. Not only that, all Pistoleras remain stacked across all reels and you can retrigger both free spins and other bonuses from within the free spins round.
The best and potentially most lucrative bonus however comes via the Scatter Money symbol. Land three of these symbols across reels 3, 4 and 5 and you trigger the Saloon Bonus which is a simple selection game where you need to match three Pistoleras to win. Pick right and you can walk away with a potential in game jackpot of 110,000 coins.
The bonus games in Pistoleras are undeniably enjoyable, however there were times in the review when it seemed like you are playing endlessly before triggering a bonus round. The fact that it took so long to trigger a bonus game does diminish the slots appeal a tad, although this is offset by the fact that you do win so regularly on the game.
Pistoleras is a fun, fast and enjoyable slot that is perfect for all types of slot player and it boasts a handy Autoplay feature if you like to let the slot run while you get on with other things. It's a typical low volatile slot, but if there is one criticism, it is that the bonuses seem rather difficult to trigger compared to other Microgaming slots of a similar design.
