They shared just one common trait; fortune favoured them for one moment in a Las Vegas casino and in doing so, changed their life forever.

Therefore, counting down from the biggest to the smallest, here is Las Vegas' lucky seven:

Name (or other details) - Age - Amount Won - Name of Casino

1. Mr X - Software engineer - 25 - $39.7m - Excalibur

In March 2003, a 25-year-old software engineer from Los Angeles became the richest ever winner in the city of Las Vegas when playing the Megabucks slot machine at the Excalibur Casino. That win, of almost $40m has still not been surpassed almost ten years later and the man who won the vast amount still remains a mystery.

2. Cynthia Jay-Brennan - 37 - $34.9m - Desert Inn

In January 2000, Cynthia Jay-Brennan, a former cocktail waitress became the recipient of the largest Megabucks Jackpot win in history (until beaten by Mr X above three years later). Playing at the Desert Inn, she landed almost $35m. However triumph turned to tragedy just six weeks later when a drunk driver hit her car, killing her sister and leaving her paralysed from the chest down. This tragedy fuelled a still-popular urban myth that circulates the globe to this day, that bad things happen to the big jackpot winners in Las Vegas.

3. Mrs B - Retired Flt Attendant - 67 - $27.5m - Palace Station

In November 1998 at the Palace Station Casino, a 67 year old retired flight attendant living in Las Vegas had decided to go and spend $100 playing the Megabucks machine. After spending her first $100 without success, she spent another $100 again to no avail. She then decided to have one last try and added another $100. Third time proved lucky as the machine lit up, rewarding her with a jackpot of $27.5m. In doing so, she became the first ever $20m+ winner of the Megabucks jackpot.

4. Johanna Huendl - 74 - $22.6m - Bally's

Feeling peckish, Johanna Huendl from California had decided that she would head to Bally's to enjoy breakfast before starting her day. Giving in to other temptation on the way, she passed the Megabucks machine and put around $170 into the machine before everything suddenly went crazy. Johanna was delighted with her $2m win, but was stunned that she had misread the amount somewhat, actually winning $22.6m!

5. Mr Y - consultant - 49 - $21.3m - Caesars Palace

Mr Y was a successful business consultant on holiday in Las Vegas in June 1999 when he ventured into the famous Caesars Palace Casino. He put $10 into the slots of the Megabucks machine he was playing and hit the play button, instantly transforming his meager $10 stake into $21.3m!

6. Elmer Sherwin - 92 - $21.1m - Cannery

Mr Elmer Sherwin is not just the oldest ever winner of a Megabucks jackpot, but he may just about be the luckiest player of the game in its history. In 2005, while playing at Cannery Casino, Mr Sherwin won $21.1m playing the slot. The native of Las Vegas said it had been a lifelong dream to win the jackpot...twice! Incredibly, Mr Sherwin had hit the same Megabucks jackpot before, winning $4.6m in 1989 at the Mirage casino.

7. Mrs A unknown - ? - $12.7m - Aria

This anonymous lady was actually not intending to play any of the slot machines at the Aria casino as she was on her way to her room. On a whim, she decided to put the six dollars she had with her into the machine and watched as the machine 'malfunctioned'. Her niece, walking by looked quizzically at the machine and said that it hadn't actually suffered a software meltdown, but that Mrs A had just hit the jackpot, earning herself $12.7m!

Who will be the next big winner to earn their place on this illustrious list?

Unfortunately the Megabucks game is not online, but the if you want to try to win millions online you can always try the MegaMoolah.com game, which has become the most popular progressive slot machine known on the internet.
