It seems incredible to think that Lewis Carroll first wrote about Alice's adventures in Wonderland back in 1865.

Since then this famous story, which many suggest was written while under the influence of some illegal substances, has remained one of the most popular children's tales, capturing that perfect balance between wondrous imagination and at the same time being genuinely unsettling at times.

One of the most famous characters Alice met on her travels was the Mad Hatter, who famous hosted a Tea Party. Well, it is this character and that event that are the source of inspiration for the popular Mad Hatters slot. A brightly, coloured feast for the eyes which allows players the chance to win up to 300,000 coins.

What you have here is a 5x3 reel slot that is somewhat large in size than the usual slot game with the reels occupying most of the screen, therefore there isn't a background as such to the slot. The house edge on this slot is just 3% which definitely makes this a lower variance game and that means regular lower value wins and a game that offers all round decent play value over the longer term, with greater variance in the short term.

One of the hallmarks of the book was that it was vivid in description and lavish with its colour and the Mad Hatter slot certainly follows that lead. There's none of the ubiquitous playing card low symbols on the reels here. What you have are a number of different Mad Hatter's Tea Party themed symbols with a lot of emphasis on cake. Indeed, there are several different types across the reels as well as an assortment of other goodies, such as a teapot and sugar bowl, a cup of tea, plus some of the Mad Hatters esteemed guests at the Party and of course, the Mad Hatter himself.

In addition to the standard symbols there are some other symbols and features which you can trigger in the slot to help you land some better value wins. The first of these is the in game Wild symbol, which is the Mad Hatters hat. This symbol can be used to replace all the other symbols in the game, apart from the bonus or the scatter symbol. Five wilds across the reels triggers the biggest base game jackpot and if you land the Wild symbol on the third reel, then it will expand across the reel to turn it completely wild, offering you the chance of a multiple payline win.

As well as the Wild symbol, another key symbol on the reels is the Cuckoo Clock symbol, which is the Bonus symbol and when you land three or more of these symbols across the reels you launch the Cuckoo Bonus game. Here, you get to choose from a number of different clocks shown on the screen, pick wisely and you could be taking home the top prize of 13,500 coins for this bonus round. That is a huge amount to be won on a simple Pick Me game.

The other symbol to take not of on the reels is the White Rabbit symbol, which is the scatter symbol. You can land three, four or five of these symbols anywhere across the reels to trigger both a nice cash prize and also to trigger the free spins bonus round. How many free spins you trigger depends on the number of scatters landed with three scatters triggering 10 free spins, four triggering 25 and five triggering the maximum of 50.

During your free spins all your wins come with a fantastic 2x multiplier attached and that is not all. You can also select one of the three characters on the reels and for the duration of that round, this character will act as an additional Wild symbol on the reels helping you to land even more cash from the bonus feature.

What really makes the Mad Hatter slot stand out however is how Microgaming have put all these features together and offers the player absorbing, good value game play that offers a great mix of risk and reward but adds to that the chance of winning a serious amount of money in some of the bonus features.

Admittedly, your chances of winning the 13,500 coins in the Cuckoo Bonus game are slim and the chances of hitting four or five scatters to trigger more than 10 free spins are also slim, but they do happen from time to time and on occasion, these bigger wins can turn a generally enjoyable session at the reels into a truly memorable one.

That is the real beauty behind the Mad Hatter slot. It isn't the fact that it has a couple of good value features, it is that the slot has the perfect balance between being a tight slot at times and not paying out much, but then offering payouts which make the player feel like they are being genuinely rewarded and not simply losing money at a slower rate.

Mad Hatters is available to play now on both desktop and mobile devices at any number of high quality Microgaming Casinos.
