One of the most compelling reasons people play online slots and in particular progressive jackpot games such as MegaMoolah.com, is the chance that on just one spin of the reels, you could turn a minuscule stake into a massive personal fortune.

Of course, for the majority of us, the prospect of a fortune derived from the slots remains a pipe dream, but there are a growing number of players who have won millions, indeed several millions, from playing some of the most popular progressive slots available in casinos that you see on our website every day.

What happens if one day, that person was you?

It is always nice to indulge in a little flight of fancy, so let's imagine that you have seen the progressive jackpot on MegaMoolah.com creeping higher and higher over the weeks and months since it was last won.

Let's now imagine that you spend some of your balance on the slot and spin the reel and that this one spin, is the one that will change your life forever. You win it, the big, massive, life-changing jackpot is now yours to spend, tax-free, however as you like.

What are you going to do with it?

It is tempting to think that for every person who has become rich overnight through landing a big slots jackpot, or indeed through another form of instant millionaire-making, that they will have wildly different ways to spend their money and that they will all make very different decisions with their money and their lives thanks to their new found wealth.

However, research compiled in October 2012 on behalf of UK National Lottery firm Camelot, revealed that when it comes to big wins, most people tend to spend their money and make decisions about their life in very similar ways.

Lifestyle decisions

Would you quit your job if you won a serious amount of money on the slots? Well the surprising thing is that the research showed that only 59 percent of big money winners actually quit their jobs following their success.

That doesn't mean however that everyone else carried on working. Of the remaining 41 percent, only 19 percent carried on working in their current job. 15 percent of winners were already retired and 2 percent of those asked carried on working in the same job, but had their hours reduced.

This means that around 1 in 5 of big money winners actually carry on working despite the big win, albeit some with reduced hours.

Are you someone who thinks a windfall would be the key to starting your own business? Well 15 percent of big money winners have done precisely that, with a further 9 percent investing in other people setting up businesses (mainly friends and family) and 6 percent have invested in buying shares or part-ownership of an existing business.

One of the most common things a newly-rich person does when they receive their cash is to head away on holiday and 27 percent of people are most likely to head to the United States. 9 percent visited the Caribbean with 6 percent visiting Dubai and the Canary Islands. Other popular destinations for newly rich jackpot winners included Mallorca, Portugal, the Maldives and perhaps surprisingly, Canada.

However, the newly rich don't stint when it comes to vacations. 68 percent of those questioned revealed that they use their wealth to stay in 5-star hotels, although 10 percent did eschew such luxury and instead opted to buy themselves a new caravan.

When considering what they would do with a big jackpot win on the slots, many people think they would like to help others and there is strong evidence that big money winners do precisely that. By October 2012, the UK National Lottery had created 3,000 millionaires and as a result of their wins, a further 510 people had been made millionaires through gifts and donations from the lottery winners.

So if you won big on the slots, then it seems half of you would quit your job, though 1 in 5 would keep it. Others would set up their own business, or buy into an existing business. You'd take 5-star holidays, most likely in the US and you'd also be likely to help friends and family members out financially.

What a wonderful position to be in all thanks to the spin of a reel.

Spending choices

In addition to choices about work, spending money on family and friends and holidays, it is also exciting to think about how you would spend the rest of your money from a big win.

Research shows that 82 percent of big money winners move into a new main residence when they achieve a big win and that on average, in the UK at least, the average spend on a new main residence for a big money winner is around 900,000 UK pounds.

That's not all the money spent on property however as in addition to that, lottery winners have also paid of the mortgages on 3700 properties for family and friends and they have also spent a proportion of their income on 5,498 properties that are used as holiday homes, an investment or as gifts to friends and family members.

If you spend on a new home then you are 28 percent likely to have a walk in wardrobe, 29 percent likely to have a hot tub installed, 24 percent likely to have electric gates fitted to the driveway and 22 percent likely to have a dedicated games room (though only 7 percent had a full-sized snooker table installed).

Your new found wealth could also be used to employ others with 30 percent of big money winners employing at least one cleaner, 24 percent employing a gardener and 5 percent spending out on their own personal beautician.

Big money winners are also very likely to spend their winnings on a new car. Indeed, a big money winner is likely to own, on average, 5.75 cars, with an average price of £46,116 per vehicle.

So what cars are top of the wish list for the nouveau-riche? Well surprisingly, the top marques are not listed. There's no Ferrari's, Lamborghini's or Rolls Royce's in the top five, with Audi (16 percent), Range Rover and BMW (11 percent), Mercedes (10 percent) and Land Rover (5 percent) being the most popular purchases.

Finally, other than property, the most likely thing a newly rich jackpot winner is likely to spend their money on is securing investments to safeguard their future. These investments are aimed at providing a sustainable future income (such as a rentable holiday property, investment in stocks and shares etc).

This shows that most jackpot winners seem savvy enough not to spend all of their winnings, but to ensure that a good proportion of it is spent ensuring that they can continue to enjoy their fabulous, opulent new lifestyle for many years to come.

And Finally...

It's worth remembering that a big progressive slots jackpot win doesn't mean you have to spend your money like every other person listed above. Indeed there are plenty of examples of big winners who have spent their cash a little more frugally, or eccentrically.

One couple won millions and decided to splash out on a holiday in the not-so-glamorous resort of Scarborough. One Scottish millionaire decided to be even more frugal and his one concession to a glamorous lifestyle was to invest in some double glazing.

Lastly, one lucky farmer who struck it rich was one of the 19 percent who continued in work, how do we know that? Because he spent a large amount of his fortune on a brand new bailer.

However you elect to spend your windfall, we hope that one day you are left pondering the same decisions as the fortunate people detailed above.
