It is incredible to think that 50 players have already landed the top multi-million prize on the famous Mega Moolah slot.
One of the most exciting aspects of the Mega Moolah game is that the jackpot can be won at any time, on any spin by any player playing the game. Whether you are wagering the minimum bet of 0.25 or are spending 6.25 on a spin, you still have a chance at landing that dream prize, which at the time of writing is $12.5 million!
This has led to some interesting results over the years, smaller value wins when the jackpot has been triggered twice within the space of a few days have occurred, but also the opposite, where the jackpot has not been triggered for a lengthy period of time and has grown to an increasingly larger amount.
In this article we are going to take a retrospective look at some of the biggest and most notable jackpot winners on the Mega Moolah slot and tell you a little more about each win. We'll also explain why the win was notable. We'll then take a look at the current Mega Moolah jackpot and where this next win could stand in comparison to those big previous winners.
The Mega Moolah slot has four progressive jackpots built in, which are the Mini, Minor, Major and Mega. The Mega Jackpot has a guaranteed and minimum jackpot amount of 1 million British Pounds.
Let's recap from the beginning with the first ever Mega Moolah progressive jackpot pay out.
Of course, when we say this we mean the first winner of the Mega Jackpot, not the Mini, Minor or Major jackpot prizes. We know very little information about the identity of this first ever winner of the progressive slot.
What we do know is that the player who struck lucky heralded from South Africa and they won their jackpot prize in November 2007. The amount they won was paid to the player in South African Rand and was R4,308,741, which sounds a huge amount, and was back then in South Africa, but when converted into dollars, the amount equates to roughly $643,978.14 at the exchange rate in November 2007.
This is one of the smallest Mega Jackpots paid out (in dollars), however it is still notable as this lucky player was the first ever winner and landed the jackpot on the African continent, which has become a rarity over the years.
In the early days of Mega Moolah, the game wasn't as popular or played nearly as much as it is now, so jackpots used to be triggered relatively rarely, however the second time the jackpot prize was won, it triggered a far more substantial amount and is, what I would view, as being the first big win on any online jackpot slot.
The next winner of the Mega Moolah jackpot came in April 2008, five months after the South African winner. The player, known as Klaus hailed from Finland, and landed their jackpot in US dollars.
This lucky player took home a prize of $5,556,753.68 according to MegaMoolah.com.
"When I saw 5,556,753.68 flash on my screen, I thought it was a US phone number" stated Klaus after this win.
"It couldn't be a jackpot, I must be mistaken! So I just got up from my table and went outside to clear my head and then came back in again for another look and noticed five and a half million dollars sitting in my casino account!"
Klaus' win was confirmed soon after the casino telephone him the good news. The rest is history, and by this we mean that the Mega Moolah became a hit!
A little over a year later, the Mega Moolah jackpot had crept up to over 6 million and in May 2009, the next lucky player would win the jackpot prize and change their life forever.
That player was a Greek-based player known as Georgios. Playing for five Euro per spin, he landed a staggering jackpot prize of €6,374,599.92 In US dollar terms that equaled to a massive $8,543,836.32 win!
After his mega-win, Georgios famously exclaimed "I still cannot believe it!" but were hoping that a good few years down the line he has learned to enjoy his good fortune!
Although their win of $1,070,272 is not one of the biggest ever won on the Mega Moolah slot by any means, the fact that one player landed this prize in May 2012 is notable as they were the very first player to win the jackpot prize playing from a mobile device. Prior to this win, all wins had been achieved on a PC, either via a downloaded casino client software, or from instant play on a browser, according to MegaMoolah.com.
This first win would be the first of many wins that were achieved by players playing from their mobile and this is a trend which has continued to the present day to the point where all of the last ten jackpot winners have landed their prize playing from mobile devices.
Over the next few years the Mega Moolah slot would see its first instant (in browser, rather than via a download) winner in July 2009 and in April 2012, the first ever jackpot triggered from one of the other Mega Moolah slots other than the original. This occurred when one player from Europe landed a €1.3m prize playing the Mega Moolah 5 Reel Drive.
However, all those wins had been small compared to Georgios' win but just prior to Christmas in December 2012, one lucky UK-based player would set a new record for the largest payout on Mega Moolah.
That lucky player was John Orchard from Lincolnshire and his story is an interesting one as John was far more inclined to play a game of bingo online than he was to spin the reels. However, this time around John decided to spend some of his money playing Mega Moolah for £0.30 per spin because the jackpot was considerable. It would prove to be one of his shrewdest moves!
That's because in the evening, John spun the reels and saw the Mega Moolah Jackpot Bonus Game load up. He then clicked the Bonus Wheel into motion and was staggered when it came to rest in the Mega Jackpot sector. John had landed the Mega Moolah prize of £5,883,044.00 in the base currency of British Pounds, which meant that he was now the biggest winner in Mega Moolah history. In US dollar terms John's win equaled to a huge $9,433,755.20 win!
John would hold the record as the biggest ever Mega Moolah jackpot winner for several years, with only one win (by a Canadian player of CA$7,561,773) approaching his bumper win.
However, that would change in the autumn of 2015, when after a relatively lean year of wins, the next Mega Moolah win would not only smash the record for the biggest amount won on a game, but also the Guinness World Record for the largest amount of money ever won on an online slot.
Throughout 2013 and 2014, the Mega Moolah jackpot paid out a steady number of millionaire winners, although none of these wins approached the record amount won by John Orchard in 2012. However, after being triggered in November 2014, the jackpot then grew to over 7 million by April 2015 and was won by a Canadian player at just over CA$7.5 million.
With the jackpot not being won in British Pounds, this meant that there was still a significant amount of money left in the Mega Moolah prize fund once the lucky winner had been paid out and the amount began to climb and within a couple of months the amount available to be won had surpassed the 7.5 million.
Throughout the summer and into the autumn the prize fund climbed to 8, 9, 10, 11 million. By now, every slot player worth their salt had recognized that the Mega Moolah jackpot had climbed to unprecedented levels and with many more players trying their luck, the jackpot continued to grow and increased in size at a faster rate.
By the 6th October 2015, the jackpot had crashed through the 13 million barrier and would set a new record when won. Then a former soldier based in Crewe in the UK decided to play through some 0.25p spins on the Mega Moolah slot.
His name was Jonathon Heywood and he was surprised to trigger the Jackpot Bonus Game relatively early into his session. He spun the reel and then could not believe it when the wheel came to rest in the silver sector.
"It's all so surreal and I can't come to terms with it just yet," stated Jon after his huge win.
"I just keep staring at my screen and seeing this huge number in my casino account."
Jon's win was confirmed at £13,213,838.68 ($20,118,938.56) and this was verified by the Guinness Book of Records as being the largest online progressive jackpot prize ever paid out by a slot game. It was more than double the amount of the previous record and remains the biggest cash prize ever paid out by Mega Moolah and indeed by any online slot as recorded by the official website MegaMoolah.com.
Jon decided to cash some of his windfall on securing the best medical treatment available for his poorly father, but also spent a little of his money on treating himself to his dream car.
With the world now agog at the riches you could land on the Mega Moolah slot, it is unsurprising that the game grew massively in popularity over this period and in 2016, there was clear evidence of this as three of the four jackpots won in that year exceeded the 10 million mark.
First a New Zealand based player landed a prize of NZ$10,144,395 in June 2016 and then later in the year two players from Canada, both claimed big money prizes.
In August 2016, one player landed CA$11,610,536.59 and then just a few months later in November 2016 another Canadian landed a prize of $11,633,898.44.
There was then just a gap of ten days between the next winner as one Australian player took home a prize of AU$5,634,326.71.
If 2016 was remarkable for the size of the four wins, then 2017 was remarkable for the sheer volume of Mega Moolah jackpot winners. Previous to 2017, there most times the jackpot had been won in a single calendar year was six times back in 2014.
That record would be smashed beyond recognition across 2017 when a total of 13 players landed the million+ sized jackpot prizes across the year. Indeed the jackpot was triggered at least once in every month of the year, apart from February which saw no winners. However the months of May and June saw two winners each and in the most incredible of circumstances.
That's because in both months the Mega Moolah jackpot was triggered twice on the same day each time. In May one player won €3.7 million on the 22nd May 2017 and then just over five hours later a Canadian player landed a CA$1,000,350 prize.
Incredibly, the same thing happened again on the 19th June 2017 when one New Zealand player landed a prize of NZ$1,599,752 and this was followed just nine hours later by an Australian player winning AU$1,000,727.
The 13 wins achieved in 2017 will likely remain the record for Mega Moolah wins in a calendar year for several years to come as stated on MegaMoolah.com.
There has been no real challenger to Jon Heywood's big win in 2015 since that momentous day but 2018 could see that change. The year has already seen six winners, including two winners in April that were just one day apart (on the 19th and 20th April). The amounts won as jackpots have not approached the 13.2 million prize, but that could be about to change.
Since the jackpot was won on the 20th April by a UK-based player of £1,778,226. It was reseeded to the minimum amount of £1,000,000 following that win. The jackpot was not won in May but in June a New Zealand based player landed a NZ$8,332,554 win.
That meant that the jackpot amount reset to around 4.4 million after awarding the win and since then, the prize has grown, and grown throughout July and into August and now the prize has climbed to a massive 12.5 million and is still growing.
To set a new record for a jackpot win, the jackpot still need to climb by another million or so and the next winner of the prize would need to be in British Pounds (as wins in other currencies would not likely eclipse the value of Jon Heywood's win), but if that does come to pass then 2018 could see new records set not just for the largest Mega Moolah win, but for the largest ever win on an online slot.
So will the record be broken? Over the coming weeks, we will find out! So why not have a few spins today and who know, it may be your name and story that is being told on these pages in the future.
