Once again Microgaming have ventured into the realm of the East for their newest slot game, but the amusingly titled Win Sum Dim Sum, ventures into the area of Chinese cuisine and in particular their bite-sized snack food that is traditionally served inside a steamer basket.
In truth, there is such a staggering variety of food that can be called "dim sum" that there is no one food type that fits the bill, in much the same way "tapas" refers to a large variety of smaller dishes in Spanish cuisine, so dim sum does the same in Chinese.
The great news is that you don't have to be a love of dim sum, or indeed any other type of Chinese food, to enjoy the rich menu of delights that are on offer from the Win Sum Dim Sum slot, all you need is a bankroll and a willingness to get the reels spinning.
The basic ingredients are that Win Sum Dim Sum is the typical 5x3 reel slot that Microgaming are so good at producing. This slot has just nine paylines in operation and this is certainly a slot aimed at the lower stakes game with you able to get the reels spinning form just 0.09 and the maximum bet on the slots being 22.50.
The paylines are fixed, so you have to play all nine on every spin, although that is no hardship given the very low cost of getting the reels spinning at the cheapest price.
If threes' one thing that is a tad disappointing about the slot it is that the backdrop for the slot is simply a red patterned border. I'd have thought the noise of a bustling Chinese restaurant with tables in the background, or chefs preparing the food would have given the game a little extra context, but with red being a colour of prosperity in Chinese culture, it is easy to see why Microgaming have opted for this particular colour-scheme in the background.
The symbols on the reel are easy to identify. The low symbols that offer the smaller cash prizes are the ubiquitous playing card lows (10 through to the Ace) although each of these has been adorned with a small Chinese-themed trinket.
The higher symbols are the four different types of dim sum. There's a folded shell like noodle, what looks like a tasty dumpling, plus an orange-coloured dish that looks rather like carrots and a leaf-enshrined rice dish with Soy Sauce in the middle. Of them all, it is the Shell Noodle that pays out the higher amount at 300 coins for landing five symbols across a payline.
Other than these symbols there are just two other symbols on the reels and both of these unlock the key features of the Win Sum Dim Sum slot.
The first of these is the in game Wild symbol, which on this slot is the Win Sum Dim Sum logo. This offers payout when it appears just twice on the reels, but the more Wilds you land on a payline the greater the prize awarded, up to a maximum of 3,000 coins for all five Wilds on a payline. This is the top prize available in the base game.
Of course, the Wilds also substitute for all other symbols in the game and during the base game, the Wilds can expand over Reel three to try and create more winning paylines for the player.
The other key symbol is the teapot scatter symbol and again, this offers a payout from just 2 landed across the reels but three or more will see you awarded 15 free spins, which can be re-triggered from within the bonus game by landing three or more scatters again.
During free spins you will also discover that to help you land bigger wins the Win Sum Dim Sum wild symbol will expand not just on Reel 3, but also Reels 2 and 4 in addition. This means that much greater wins are possible including the chance to win up to 3,333 times your stake during the free spins bonus round.
Win Sum Dim Sum is a fun, enjoyable slot that offers the basic requirements of a modern slot very well. The game is fast paced, easy on the eye and fun to play, though by the end of your session, you'll likely have a tummy rumbling through hunger!
