Presentation
The first thing you notice about the Asgard slot is that it does try to give you a sense of epic scale and grandeur. The backdrop is the planet Asgard with other planets or moons in the night sky against a backdrop of stars with Asgard at the foot of the screen. It is all very foreboding, decorated in dark blues and blacks but the effect is very good.
The reels are very simple and it is a 5x3 reel set up but no pay lines are in play as instead this is a 243-ways to win slot. The musical accompaniment to the slot is also very grand but unfortunately it is on a somewhat short loop and it does quickly start to grate a little on your nerves as a result.

What's on the reels?
Part of the reason why this is a medium to higher variance game is the number of different symbols on the reel. There are six of the lower value symbols and these are the playing card symbols from the nine through to the ace and these pay out as standard between 5 coins and up to 150 coins for five aces or kings across the reels.
There are also six higher value symbols on the reel, these are Mjolnir, Thor's hammer, Asgard itself, the Goddess Valkyrie, Loki, Thor and Odin and these symbols offer pay outs of between 15 coins and 500 coins depending on the symbol landed and how many you land across the reels.
That means there are a total of 12 standard symbols and alongside these are a couple of other key symbols, the Wild and the Scatter, both of which are key to unlocking some of the better features in the slot as we shall discover below.
Wild features
The gold colored Wild symbol appears on all the reels and it can be used to substitute for any of the lower or higher value symbols above. Best feature of the Asgard slot
Without doubt the best feature of the Asgard slot is the Free Spins bonus games. They build up very nicely from what is a very simple and standard Goddess Bonus game up to the Valhalla feature which has considerably more Free Spins available and some potentially big value wins. The variation between the games is excellent with different features triggered on each one and this does add a 'quest' feel to the slot as once you unlock a Free Spins round, you can opt to play it again on a subsequent trigger of the bonus.
What does the Asgard slot lack?
Well, Asgard won't win any awards for originality as this is simply Realtime Gaming's attempt at a Thunderstruck-style slot but to be fair they have done an excellent job in creating their own version of the game. Yes, it is very similar, but given how popular Thunderstruck is as a series, that is no bad thing and will attract plenty of players who enjoyed the original slot. For me, the only other thing I'd have added to the slot would have been a bit more variance in the musical score as it is a bit repetitive and somewhat uninspiring at times.
Conclusion
Asgard is a homage to one of the most popular slots of all time and it works very well in terms of replicating the style of game that the Thunderstruck series of slots offers. In its own right, Asgard is a fun to play slot and it is hugely enjoyable unlocking the Free Spins bonus rounds one after the other, but it does take a lot of time to work through and finally unlock each game.
