Remember the Wile-E-Coyote and Road Runner cartoons? It was engaging to watch this somewhat flea-bitten coyote try all kinds of crazy schemes to capture his nemesis, only to fail every single time, often in the most painful and unlikely ways imaginable.
That classic cartoon seems to have been the inspiration behind the Coyote Cash slot from Realtime Gaming, where this time the Coyote isn't trying to capture an avian nemesis, but instead has his eyes set on a armored van full of cash, driven by an police officer who is an eagle.
As you can tell from the description, this is more a cartoon-styled slot that offers punters a relatively simple game to play. As an older game, it is perhaps looking its age a bit against some of the more modern slots of the day, but the question is whether the Coyote Cash slot still stands up well when you want to try it for a few spins.
So in this review, we are going to find out.

The setting of the slot is the American mid-west, which features plenty of red desert scenery, limestone hills eroded away to look like decaying teeth protruding from the landscape and an abundance of cacti. It is a nice, if simplistically represented backdrop and it is this sandy desert that extends behind the reels.
At the top of the screen are the Balance, Bet and Win indicators and underneath this is the progressive jackpot prize fund. The key controls for the slot are at the foot of the reels, with the Bet buttons, the line selector and the Auto-play and Spin buttons.
The sounds are somewhat basic and are simply generic reel sounds which have been used time and time again across a number of Realtime Gaming slots. Which is nice if you want a slot that appears as if you are playing it in a casino, but not so great for developing the atmosphere of the slot. You do get the occasional blast of music (and an amusing animation) when you land a winning Wild win but that is about it.
What's on the reels?
On the reels are the usual playing card low symbols, which have been made to look as if they are made out of planks of rotting wood hastily nailed together. The low symbols range from 9 through to the ace and offer payouts of between 5 coins and 250 coins as standard.
There are three medium value symbols, the cactus, the steers skeletal head and the armored truck, while the Rattlesnake wielding a knife and the police officer eagle driving the van are the higher value symbols. Both Medium and High value symbols offer payouts for just two on a pay line and also the highest standard base game win of 5,000 coins.
In addition to these symbols there are two additional others on the reels, the Coyote Wild symbol and the Loot Scatter symbol. Both of these have their own features attached which we will explore in more detail below.
The Coyote is the Wild symbol in the game and it is good to see from the animation that triggers when he is involved in a pay line, that is hapless ways are continuing in his plan to rob the money truck. The Coyote can substitute for all other symbols apart from the Loot Scatter symbol to create a winning pay line.
When you land a Coyote as part of any winning pay line involving low, medium or high value symbols then you will earn a 2x multiplier on that win, even if it is a top value win. That means all the top prizes available for the standard symbols can be doubled if you land one or more of the Coyote Wilds as part of that pay line.
Furthermore, the Coyote Wild offers a payout themselves of between 10 coins and 10,000 coins if you land between 2 and 5 on a pay line.
Free Spins Features
Although you can win a cash prize of between 1x and 200x your bet stake for landing 2, 3, 4 or 5 Loot Scatters across the reels, you can also earn a shot at the free spins round by landing three or more of these symbols anywhere across the reels.
When you land them, you receive 20 free spins and the size of the multiplier you receive is dependent on the number of Loot Symbols landed. Three gives you a 2x multiplier, 4 gets you a 3x multiplier and 5 gives you a 4x multiplier on any wins in the free spins bonus round.
The good news is that during free spins you can also re-trigger the bonus by landing three or more of the Loot Scatters on the reels once again, this will add another set of free spins to your current amount each time it is triggered.
Other Bonus Features
The other key bonus of this slot is the Progressive Jackpot feature, which can be won on any spin in the game. This is a randomly triggered bonus, which is not dependent on any game features being triggered or any pattern of symbols landing on the reels. If you are playing the game when the progressive jackpot is triggered, then you win the jackpot, on top of any other wins you may have achieved on that spin on the slot.
Best Feature of the Coyote Cash slot
There's only two real features to pick from in the Coyote Cash slot and while each has their merits, I feel the Free Spins round is the better of the two. This is not just because it can offer considerably greater rewards at considerably less cost than standard base game spins, but the fact it can be re-triggered does mean that if your first set of spins doesn't pan out, you could trigger a second set and have another try.
I also like the fact that the number of scatters you land determines the size of the multiplier applied to your free spins wins, which does make you want to land four or five of the scatters rather than just three to maximize the potential of a bigger win during the round.
What does the Coyote Cash slot lack?
Like most of the earlier slots by Realtime Gaming, Coyote Cash was designed around a rather simple structure of a base game, a Wild symbol with a feature attached and a free spins feature, all tied in with a progressive jackpot. That formula doesn't change much in their early games and as such, if you have played any of these games then you won't find anything hugely different here.
As such, this slot does lack a bit of originality at times and the lack of presentation does mean that it doesn't quite draw you into the game as more modern slot games do. That said, there are some higher value prizes available on this slot than some others and that does help keep the excitement up.
Coyote Cash is what I would deem a “standard” early release from Realtime Gaming. It hasn't got the polish of some later releases and the structure of the slot is similar to many others released by the company but Coyote Cash does have some redeeming features including a good value bonus free spins round (which can be re-triggered) and 25 pay lines as opposed to just 20.
Add to that a decent sized jackpot and it is easy to see why of all the early slots from this company, this was one of the most popular. This isn't a bad slot at all but it just lacks some of the additional features that more modern slots possess.
