This slot is based on the martial arts movie from the 1980s which starred a very young Jackie Chan when he was making his way in the film industry in Hong Kong. It is also part of a series of Hong Kong film themed slots that all share the same progressive jackpot fund.

Now some of these Hong Kong films only tend to have a tenuous grasp on reality but it seems that the way the Eagle Shadow Fist slot is set up that this movie seems to be more grounded in realism. That may be a good thing, but in truth it depends on how the slot has been put together.

So let's take a look at it in more detail and find out.

Presentation

The presentation of the Eagle Shadow Fist slot is very nicely done. First up there is a gentle and rather pleasant Chinese-styled musical accompaniment as you play on the slot. I have no idea whether the music is anything to do with the original movie (I suspect not), but regardless it is a very nice accompaniment to what you see on screen.

There you have a very simple backdrop of an Asian jungle and set in the middle of it in a clearing is a number of temple buildings and pagodas. It's not a cheery scene though as it is a very rainy day with buckets of rain falling from the sky.

The progressive jackpot is displayed at the top of the reels and underneath the reels are the main controls with information on pay lines, the spin button plus options to increase or decrease the size of your line bet, the number of lines in play and the denomination of the coins you want to use for the slot. There is also an Autoplay feature available. So with the 5x3 reels, it is a pretty standard set up to follow and very easy to get to grips with.

What's on the reels?

When it comes to the symbols there are essentially three types, the lower value, higher value and feature symbols. The lower value symbols are the playing card symbols from the 9 through to the ace, but they have been designed in an oriental-themed way (as if they have been scrawled in paint) and they look very effective. Wins range from 5 coins to 250 coins for these symbols.

There are five higher value symbols, and these are all stylized characters taken from the original movie, including a very young looking Jackie Chan as the green symbol. Each of these symbols has an attributed color with red and purple being the lower value ones, the green being the middle value while the orange and red offer the higher pay outs.

Each of these higher value symbols also pays out small amounts for two symbols on a line, while the larger pays you can land range from 500 coins up to the maximum 5,000 coins.

There are three other symbols that can appear on the reels and these are the symbols that trigger the main features of the slot that we shall explore in more detail below.

Wild features

The first of these symbols is the Wild symbol and this is red and gold in color and is also the highest paying symbol on the slot with five on a line offering you a 10,000-coin jackpot win. The Wild can also be used as a replacement for any of the high or lower value symbols listed above and when it is used to substitute for a win, it also pays a 2x multiplier on that prize.

Free Spins features

The Scatter symbol is the purple and blue colored symbol that depicts two martial arts experts fighting. The Scatter symbol serves two purposes, firstly it awards a cash prize for two, three, four or five landed across the reels of 1x, 2x, 20x and 200x your total bet, which can lead to some very nice wins at times.

In addition, land three or more scatters across the reels and you will trigger the Free Spins bonus game. Here you receive 20 Free Spins and the multiplier you receive during free spins depends on how many scatters landed. Three gives you a 2x multiplier, four gives you 3x and five gives you a 4x multiplier.

Your Free Spins start on a slightly different reel set to the original game and the good news is that you can re-trigger the bonus by landing more scatters on the reels during free spins. However, the multiplier remains the same for your additional spins as it was for the original free spins round.

Other bonus features

The other main bonus feature of the slot is that there is a progressive jackpot that increases with every real money spin on the game, or any of the games in this series of Hong Kong film themed slots. The progressive jackpot cannot be won by anything that happens on the reels, it is simply awarded at random to a lucky player that has a spin on the slot at any time.

Best feature of the Eagle Shadow Fist slot

There's lots to like about the Eagle Shadow Fist slot, I think the presentation is very nicely done and I applaud Realtime Gaming for having the guts to do an Hong Kong movie themed series of progressives. It makes a nice change from the same superhero, Roman/Greek legends themed progressive series that are common in other parts of the world. For me though the very best feature is the Free Spins bonus game and that is for two reasons, firstly it can be very rewarding at times and secondly, it isn't very difficult to trigger (although earning a re-trigger from within the bonus is markedly more difficult in my experience).

What does the Eagle Shadow Fist slot lack?

The first thing that the Eagle Shadow Fist slot lacks, especially for players in the west, is an immediacy of understanding as to what the game is about. I did genuinely think based on the name that this was a slot based on an ancient Chinese game of some form. Once you understand that it is a movie then the game works nicely from then on but I do feel that an additional bonus feature, perhaps one randomly triggered from the base game, or perhaps a pick'em game, would have given the slot a little added extra interest.

Conclusion

Overall the Eagle Shadow Slot is a decent game to play. It perhaps doesn't have the immediate appeal of a movie slot that is more familiar to players not from Asia, but once you get into the game then the bonuses are decent and the base game offers you some decent value wins, especially with the Wild 2x multiplier. However, after a while, the game does get repetitive and it would be nice to be able to win the progressive jackpot in the slot, rather than waiting for a completely random act to occur on a spin.

Ratings

  • Presentation: 15 / 20 - There's no complaints here in terms of presentation on the Eagle Shadow First slot. The musical accompaniment is very nicely done and the reels are animated nicely and I like the animations that play from the film when you land a win using one of the character symbols on the reels. There are several nice touches like this which do make the presentation of this slot look very slick and professional.
  • Game-Play: 13 / 20 - Initially, the game-play on the slot is good fun and if you can trigger the bonus features regularly, then you stand a decent chance of a bigger value win. However over time the base game does get a little dull to play, and triggering the bonuses can be problematic at times when the reels run a little cold and that is when things start to drag a little.
  • Bonus Features: 14 / 20 - I would say there is the standard bonus features on the Eagle Shadow Fist slot. The Wild symbol is a nice touch with the multiplier and that livens up the base game. The Free Spins bonus round is the best aspect of the slot and you can land some sizeable wins playing it and of course, the progressive jackpot is always there to be won. However it would have benefited from another bonus feature to give the game a little added depth.
  • Entertainment Factor: 12 / 20 - There's some nice presentation touches in the Eagle Shadow Fist slot and the game itself is fine to play. However after a little while the slot does become a little repetitive and if you don't trigger a bonus in a short space of time, you can find your attention wanders a little as the game sometimes fails to hold your attention.
  • Play Value: 12 / 20 - This is a variable slot and at times, it seems to throw money at you and at others, you can go through several spins without a win. However looking at it over the longer term then I would say that this is a medium variance game, perhaps on the lower side if you play for smaller amounts of money per spin, but perhaps edging towards higher variance if you wager considerably more per spin.
  • Overall 68 / 100 - There's a lot to like about the Eagle Shadow Fist slot. The graphics and animations are nicely done, the music is good and the way the game plays and offers you regular rewards makes it enjoyable. However after a little while things do tend to get a little repetitive, especially if you cannot hit the crucial Free Spins bonus that tends to give you a better opportunity of winning. Overall, this is a good, but perhaps not a great slot, but it is still worth a spin if you like trying for a progressive jackpot.

Good Luck!
