Here's an interesting little fact for you; did you know that the Thailand capital city we call Bangkok goes under a different name in Thai and that its official name used in the country is the longest place name in the world today?
That's because in Thailand, Bangkok is officially known as Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Ayuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchatani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Piman, Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit.
That is a bit of a mouthful to remember, so the local Thai's tend to stick with just Krung Them Maka Nakhon or just Krung Thep, thankfully! The city is one of the most beautiful in the world and attracts many visitors every year to sample it's wide range of eastern delights.
It is also the theme of a NextGen Gaming slot Bangkok Nights, which is based on the nightlife that the city is so famous for. So how does this 5-reel slot with 25 selectable lines shape up? We decided to take a closer look and find out for ourselves.

Presentation
It is fair to say that the presentation on the Bangkok Nights slot is rather basic. The 5-reels are designed in a more retro style and the same can be said for the symbols on the reels (as we'll discover below). The sound is also very basic with no backing music track and instead all you get are the sound effects of a slot being played.
The main controls of the slot are accessed from the icon at the foot of the page and here you can control the size of your bet and the number of lines you want in play. The game is best played however with all 25 possible lines selected and in play (which is a minimum bet of 0.25). The backdrop of the slot is a Thai temple and dragons are located either side of the slot to give it a more Thai feel.
Compared to most modern slots, the Bangkok Nights slot is a little simplistic in terms of its presentation, so if you are looking for something spectacular, you are going to be disappointed. However, the game plays fine in itself, it is just not the most inspiring slot to play.
What's on the reels?
The symbols on the reels begin with the playing card symbols which go from the 10 through to the Ace and these offer the lowest value wins from 5 coins up to 150 coins. The two ticket symbols are also the same value prize as the Ace for some reason, which can be a little confusing.
Higher value symbols on the reels include a pair of glitzy earrings, a top hat and white gloves and a very stylish mask which is the highest paying standard symbol in the game offering wins from 6 coins for 2 symbols across the reels up to 1,250 coins for five.
There are two other key symbols on the reels, the Scatter and the Wild both of which offer pays in their own right and both of which offer access to some of the main features in the game.
Wild features
The rather elegant dancing lady is the Wild symbol in the game, and she can appear on any of the five reels. She can substitute for any of the symbols on the reels to help create winning lines. She is also the highest paying of all the symbols as if you can land five Wilds in a row across the reels, then that is how you will win he 10,000-coin jackpot prize. You receive a small prize of just 2 coins for landing just a single Wild on the first reel on any spin too.
Free Spins features
The Free Spins bonus game is triggered when you land three of the Bangkok Nights logo Scatter symbols across the reels from left to right. Once triggered, the bonus is awarded and you will receive 12 Free Spins, together with a 3x multiplier on all wins in the bonus game.
You can also re-trigger the bonus by landing three or more of the Scatters once again during your Free Spins which are played on the same reels as the original base game.
Other bonus features
The other bonus feature on the Bangkok Nights slot is the Pick and Win bonus game. This is landed when you hit a Wild symbol on the first reel and then another Wild on the fifth reel during the base game.
When triggered, this will award you a chance to pick from either of the triggering Wild symbols which will now have a cash prize behind them. You select one symbol and reveal the cash prize. You can then elect to take this prize, or reject it and claim the prize behind the other symbol. Of course, this cash prize may be more, or less, than the original cash prize that you claimed.
The maximum you can win in this bonus game is 100x your total bet in the base game, so this is a decent sized prize if you get lucky enough.
Best feature of the Bangkok Nights slot
The Free Spins game is the best feature of the Bangkok Nights slot. It can be tricky to access as it is not easy to land the Scatter symbols in the right order across the reels, but patience is usually rewarded when you get to the bonus as those 3x multiplier wins can add up into a very decent return, although it should be noted too that you can trigger it and win smaller amounts.
What does the Bangkok Nights slot lack?
Although this slot has three bonus features, if you include the Wild symbol, I feel that the game does lack in certain areas. It has a rather ageing look to the slot and it isn't the most appealing in terms of how it looks, plays or sounds. The rewards in the game are decent, especially for five symbol wins though and it is this which will keep players giving the game a try. However, it does have a rather unloved look and does feel like it is a slot that has been around for 15 years or so.
Conclusion
If you like simple, older-looking slots that have basic bonus features, but decent sized wins available in the base game and also the Free Spins round, then the Bangkok Nights slot does fit the bill. However, it is a rather dated slot and there are games with more innovative features, far better sound and graphics and with a more consistent approach to their theme than this game. It's not NextGen Gaming's finest slot, but there are people out there that will enjoy playing, but sadly it just wasn't a game that appealed to me.
