Do you remember the famous case of the Cottingley Fairies? Two young girls whose photographs with fairies looked so life-like, that the famous author Sir Arthur Conan-Doyle, vouched for their authenticity.

Although eventually proved fake, the story still struck a chord and the notion of Fairies in the garden or Leprechauns living under toadstools, still resonate within our culture today. It is within this broad theme that Realtime Gaming have developed their exciting Enchanted Garden slot.

Although it isn't exactly clear what the overarching theme of the slot is, you'll find jewels, butterflies, unicorns and a fairy princess. It's very much like the toy box of a five-year old girl if you ask me, but who cares so long as Realtime Gaming have put all these elements together in a fun and workable slot.

This can be a hit and miss process however, so let's take a closer look and see whether this is one Enchanted Garden which will deliver a mystical array of sparkling slot delights, or whether its magic wand is slightly defective.

Not only does the casino offer the Enchanted Garden slot, but it also offers a huge amount of other slots and games from a wide range of development companies. That's not all though as if you are a new customer at Sloto'Cash Casino, you could qualify for a starter bonus that could be worth as much as $7,777.

All you need to do is place your first deposit to receive a superb 200% bonus, tripling the amount of money you have available to play with at a stroke. Then on your second, third and fourth deposits, you'll also receive a 100% deposit bonus and on your fifth deposit, that bonus increases to 177%.

That's not all though as with each deposit you receive free spins which you can use on the Enchanted Garden slot. With up to 300 Free Spins available, this is one bonus offer that you cannot afford to turn down.

Presentation

I don't like to start any review with a moan but I am with the Enchanted Garden slot. When you create a theme like this, you need to feel whisked away to this magical glade but unfortunately, the Enchanted Garden's presentation doesn't really grab you at all.

The backdrop is some rather uninspiring leaves and grass, it looks more overgrown than enchanted and all the colors are somewhat muted so it looks rather drab and depressing. The main information about the slot is displayed at the top of the screen, with the pay lines down the sides and at the bottom are the four key controllers, Bet size, Lines, Auto-play and Spin.

I also have to say that the graphics are somewhat lacking in clarity and almost look 15-20 years old. I am not sure if Realtime Gaming were going for a retro feel in this slot, but I am not sure heading back into graphics from the 8-Bit era is the right strategy.

The sounds on the Enchanted Garden are also disappointing with generic slot noises used on the reels and no accompanying soundtrack to play along to. If you are looking for a bright, immersive, magical slot experience to go alongside the theme, then unfortunately the Enchanted Garden falls well short.

What's on the reels?

Things don't get a great deal better on the reels and that is because for some reason the slot has decided to use the playing card symbols from nine through to the ace as the lower value symbols on the reels.

I can only assume this is to ensure customers are familiar with the lower value symbols. There are a myriad of items that could have been used to fit in with the theme far better than playing cards, but for some reason Realtime Gaming decided not to use them and just add a little sparkle to the playing card symbols. These symbols offer wins ranging from 5 coins up to 250 coins as a standard win.

The higher value symbols are a bit more interesting with a red and pink jewel being the first of these, then the butterfly and finally the unicorn is the highest value standard symbol on the reel. These symbols also offer payouts for two on a pay line (though these payouts range from just 2 to 5 coins). The standard jackpot for five unicorns on a single pay line is 2,500 coins, but this win and every other base game win can be increased with the help of the Wild feature as we will explain below.

Wild Features

The Fairy Princess symbol is the Wild symbol and she can substitute for any of the standard symbols outlined above. The Wild only appears on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th reels but it does appear relatively frequently, although it doesn't trigger quite as many wins as you would like.

However, when the Fairy Princess does trigger a win it is very useful as she will automatically increase the size of the payout thanks to a 2x multiplier applied to every win her symbols is part of. This bonus applies to every win available in the base game and means that the possible jackpot instead of being 2,500 coins, is actually 5,000.

Free Spins Features

The Free Spins bonus is triggered when you land one of the Scatter symbols, the Garden water feature, on the first reel and then one of the Fairy Princess Wild symbols on the fifth reel on the same spin.

If you land two or more scatter symbols, then all you receive for that is a payout of between 1x your stake and 200x your stake (if you land five of the scatters across the reels).

When you trigger the free spins bonus you hear some music play (hooray!) and the reels change color slightly. Furthermore, behind some of the symbols are firefly symbols. When you land three or more of these symbols on the reels, each of the symbols will award you up to three additional free spins (so you could earn an extra nine free spins on that spin).

Best of all, during the Free Spins round all cash prizes you win are subject to a 3x multiplier, which means that there are even bigger prizes available to be won during the bonus feature, however you cannot re-trigger the bonus from within the game (even though you can earn additional free spins).

Other Bonus Features

The other main bonus feature of the Enchanted Garden slot is that it has a progressive jackpot fund. This jackpot cannot be won by completing any task or landing any particular pattern of symbols on the reels as it is awarded entirely at random on any spin to any player, regardless of whether the player has had a winning or losing spin.

Best Feature of the Enchanted Garden slot

The best feature of the Enchanted Garden slot is the fact that it is relatively easy to trigger the key features of the game. You will land plenty of the Fairy Princess Wild symbols though not all will lead to a pay line win, and to be fair, it is not particularly difficult to trigger the free spins bonus round either.

What this does is give you some variation in the game-play and it does make the slot feel more accessible as you can trigger the main bonuses relatively speedily, especially when compared to some other slots you can play nowadays, when landing a bonus can seem to take an eternity.

What does the Enchanted Garden slot lack?

Unfortunately, I feel the Enchanted Garden slot lacks in several areas. I have already bemoaned the level of presentation on this slot but I also feel that the level of payouts in the game is generally very small. The vast majority of wins in the base game are tiny amounts that do not cover the cost of your bet, especially if you play the maximum 20 lines.

However, mixed in are some larger bets which can keep the balance boosted for a while, but you really need the Wild symbol to land more often to turn those lower value wins into something a little more exciting and unfortunately it doesn't quite achieve that.

Similarly, the amount you win in the Free Spins round can be very volatile, many times I have won just 3x to 10x my bet amount which isn't that inspiring, especially for a slot which is a more medium variance game. Bigger wins are possible, but they are also rather difficult to come by at times.

Conclusion

The overriding impression I get with the Enchanted Garden slot is that it has been put together without a great deal of thought and in a somewhat rushed manner. The graphics and presentation are bland and uninspiring. It lacks atmosphere to drag you in, the symbols are unclear and poorly realized and the game-play is too punishing in that most wins are less than what you bet and big wins come along too infrequently to offset what can be a bit of a slog at times when spinning.

That's not to say big wins are impossible, they can and do happen and when they do, you do get a real sense of achievement, but is it worth the effort and expense of getting to that point? In my view it sadly isn't and that is why the slot lacks appeal.

Ratings

  • Presentation: 5 / 20 - This is a really disappointing aspect of the slot. Realtime Gaming could have really gone to town with the presentation of this game given how open-ended the theme is and all the possibilities, but what you have here is a very poorly put together slot with little inspiration, a muted, dull palette and sounds and graphics that come from a slot game in the 1980s. When you consider what the competition is producing for a modern slot, this isn't really good enough.
  • Game-Play: 8 / 20 - The game-play on the Enchanted Garden slot is alright up to a point as you think you are doing OK with the wins you are picking up. But when you look closer you realize the majority of wins are smaller than your bet, so you are still losing money even when you win. The bigger value wins do help bump the excitement of the game-play up a little, but these are too infrequent to make a big enough impact.
  • Bonus Features: 10 / 20 - The Wild symbol is simple to follow and has a multiplier attached which is great but unfortunately it lands very often but only triggers wins on a small percentage of those times. The Free Spins bonus is better value, but you are reliant on those extra free spins you can win to really stand a chance of a bigger value prize as all too often the wins in this section can also be very small.
  • Entertainment Factor: 5 / 20 - There's little to hold your attention in terms of the presentation and game-play and the bonus features are exciting but only up to a point. Unfortunately, this Enchanted Garden has become overgrown and is not a particularly appetizing trip in my view.
  • Play Value: 7 / 20 - We've already touched on the low value base game wins and the bonus features paying out infrequently and also only small amounts the majority of the time. This is offset a little by those infrequent base game big value wins and the bonus games where you do land some good value wins, but these happen so infrequently, you'll need to play a while to trigger them.
  • Overall 35 / 100 - Oh dear, Enchanted Garden is a little too weedy when it comes to a modern slot. It's a pity as the scope was there for an exciting slot game but it just has not been executed in the right way and the overall feeling you get when you play the game is not one of awe and wonder, just one of disappointment and the general feeling you'd be better off spending your money on a different slot altogether.
