You've got to hand it to Realtime Gaming, they have really pushed the boat out with their new Fantasy Mission Force slot. Based on a 1983 Hong Kong film, which starred a young Jackie Chan, the film, which is is wonderfully chaotic and in the mo lei tau (which translates broadly as 'makes no sense') style was set during World War II and tells the broad story of four Allied generals who are captured by the Japanese and their rescue by a motley crew of assembled soldiers of fortune.

Following them are two small-time crooks, one of whom is Jackie Chan, who erroneously believe that the group can lead them to a large cache of treasure. As with most Jackie Chan films, humor is as evident in the film as the martial arts fight scenes and in the end, Jackie Chan's character saves the day and uncovers the dastardly plot at hand before fleeing with his female accomplice.

I must admit, it wouldn't be the first film that I would want to base a slot on, but I am guessing it is a cheaper licensing option than many of the big film franchises that are in operation today and in truth, a good slot depends less than the film it was based on and more in the execution of how the slot is put together and how the different elements of it combine.

With that in mind let's take a closer look at the Fantasy Mission Force slot.

The setting of the Fantasy Mission Force slot is an army camp with a selection of wooden log buildings and gun nests visible on screen. They frame the five reels which are in the center of the screen and the progressive jackpot prize is shown in the top left hand corner of the reels.

The main controls for the slot are all located at the bottom of the reels and here you can select the number of lines, the size of coin you want to wager on each line as well as the usual Auto-play and Spin buttons.

The graphics are nicely done and accompanying the set up on screen is a suitably stirring musical piece that plays both when the reels spin and when they done. All in all, the slot looks and sound rather good and would not look out of place on a high budget Hollywood epic.

What's on the reels?

There are a total of ten standard symbols on the reels, six are lower paying and four are higher value. The six lower paying symbols are a variety of different weapons, all of which have been taken from the film.

The lower value symbols include a grenade (although it does more resemble a bottle), a knife, a crossbow, a hand gun, bazooka rockets and most oddly of all, a medieval mace. Wins with these symbols start at 5 coins and go up to 250 coins for five on a line.

The four symbols that offer the higher pay outs are four characters from the film. Oddly enough, Jackie Chan's character carries a chicken (no, I don't know why) and he offers pays from 2 coins up to 500 coins. Femme fatale Lily s the next highest paying symbol followed by a Japanese soldier and the Machiavellian Don Wen as the highest value symbol.

All four of the character symbols offer pays when you land just two on a pay line from left to right, rather than the standard three, although these pays tend to be very small.

Wild features

The Wild symbols is easy to spot as it is simply the word 'Wild' on a symbol and it appears on the second to fifth reels only. It can substitute for any of the standard symbols listed above and of course, landing more than one Wild on the screen offers you a better chance of landing a bigger value win.

When you land a winning line that contains a Wild symbol, then the prize you receive is subject to a 2x multiplier. However, the multiplier remains at 2x the amount regardless of how many Wilds are used in a winning line.

Free Spins features

In the Fantasy Mission Force slot you trigger the Free Spins bonus game in a somewhat unusual way and that is by landing a Scatter on the first reel during a spin and then landing a Wild symbol on the fifth reel on the same spin. When you achieve this you unlock the Dynamite Free Games bonus which starts you off with seven Free Spins.

During your Free Spins, you cannot re-trigger the bonus in the same way unfortunately (but there is a way to earn extra Free Spins as we will explore below). However, the good news is that all wins during the Free Spins bonus game are subject to a 3x multiplier which can radically increase the value of the wins you earn.

During Free Spins, the Kaboom! Feature is also in lay. When Free Spins is triggered, a Bickford Fuse is added to selected symbols on each spin and if you land three or more of these Bickford Fuse symbols on a line, then you will earn yourself up to three additional Free Spins in the bonus game.

Other bonus features

You can earn a win by landing between two and five scatters on the reels. Unlike most slots, numerous scatters on the reels doesn't trigger the Free Spins bonus, but just increases the value of your cash win.

You need at least two scatters anywhere on the reels to activate this bonus which starts at 1x your total bet as the first win for two scatters. This increases to 5x for three scatters, 15x for four and the largest win is 200x your total bet for five scatters across the reels.

In addition, there is the progressive jackpot bonus which increases with every real cash spin made on the slot. Any spin you play on the game could be the one that triggers the jackpot, regardless of whether that spin is a winner or a loser as the jackpot is triggered completely at random on a spin.

Best feature of the Fantasy Mission Force slot

Without doubt the best feature of the Fantasy Mission Force slot is the Free Spins bonus round. However, there is a proviso with this and that is that as a higher variance game, this bonus is particularly difficult to trigger at times. I have found that triggers tend to come in batches, with long gaps in between triggers, so you do need a decent bankroll behind you in order to explore these bonuses in full. However once triggered, the bonus round can pay out some big wins, especially if you can trigger additional spins in the Kaboom Feature (again, this is not easy.

What does the Fantasy Mission Force slot lack?

I think the Fantasy Mission Force slot is fine in terms of the content of the slot but I think what the game lacks is a little more player-friendliness in terms of how hard it is to trigger the bonuses. Don't get me wrong, you can play and trigger a bonus within say 30 spins, but other times you can play through hundreds and not even get a whiff of a chance of a bonus game. With base game pays not being that big, this can be problematic.

The Fantasy Mission Force slot is a fun and enjoyable slot which has some nice animations taken from the movie (some are rather funny to see, including the exploding cigar) and which has a decent high variance base game. The bonus features are great but they are very difficult to unlock at times and this can be frustrating when you get into one of these runs of spins where you don't get a chance to play a bonus feature. When you do though, the rewards can be impressive with a decent multiplier and the chance to earn additional Free Spins. Fantasy Mission Force is a good, but not great slot in my view.

  • Presentation: 14 / 20 - The presentation of the slot is excellent. The backdrop is imaginative and is somewhat typical of what you would see as an army camp in a film. The reels are simply done but the graphics used on them are clear and the use of little animations on some wins is a nice touch and injects a little humor into the game. The stirring music accompanying the game is also nicely done and doesn't get on the players nerves as some musical accompaniments do.
  • Game-play: 13 / 20 - For me the game-play on the Fantasy Mission Force slot is a little disappointing. The base game starts out fun but it is so hard to trigger the bonuses that it quickly becomes repetitive and after a while, this does kind of grate on your nerves a little.
  • Bonus Features: 15 / 20 - When you can trigger the bonus features on the slot then you will find that you have an excellent, if short, Free Spins bonus round which has a decent multiplier. The Kaboom! Feature is a nice touch as it can award you some extra Free Spins, but again, this bonus is perhaps too hard to trigger than it should be. However, the plus side of the bonus round is that you can land some very sizeable wins here when you do trigger it.
  • Entertainment Factor: 12 / 20 - There are some lovely touches in the Fantasy Mission Force slot and they work well and inject a little humor and fun into the game. The problem is that once you see them once or twice, they lose their appeal a little and then you feel that because the base game makes it so hard to trigger the bonuses, that you are simply spinning and spinning and spinning in hope, rather than with a realistic chance of hitting the bonus and that does make the slot less enjoyable.
  • Play Value: 8 / 20 - For me this is the one aspect of the slot which drags it down a little. Of course a higher variance game isn't ever going to pay out plenty of money on most spins, but what I do find a little tough and which does affect the value of the slot, is how difficult it is to trigger the bonuses. It shouldn't be that difficult given that the trigger seems quite easy to hit, but somehow it proves to be very elusive at times.
  • Overall 62 / 100 - Fantasy Mission Force is a decent slot that has some excellent features, notably the bonus games, but as a higher variance slot, it is not a game for someone who likes to keep a tight hold of their bankroll. You may need to spend big in order to get the best out of this slot but if you can hit the bonus features, then the slot can pay out some very large amounts if you are lucky enough to land them.

Good Luck!
