Some people it seems just can't get along, whether it's two football fans arguing over which teams is the best, two siblings bickering over what TV station to watch, or two ethereal beings from another realm locked in a eternal quest for dominance over the other, people do like to have a bit of a grump at each other now and then.
That is precisely the story behind Microgaming's brand new slot, although on a slightly more epic scale than two scallywags arguing over the TV remote. In the exciting Forbidden Throne slot, you have 2 legendary guardians, one named Wulthor who just so happens to be the Elven Lord of Fire and he is pitted against Sorconass, the Queen of Ice. Who will come out in the battle between these two elemental forces, named as the Guardians of the Forbidden Throne? Well that's what you will find out when you play the slot.
The main points of the slot are outlined below in our Mini Slot Overview, while you can get more meat on the bones of the slot by reading through the rest of the review, including a superb tip as to where you can play this brand new release from Microgaming.

Where Can I Play the Forbidden Throne slot?

You can also play this and many other outstanding games from Microgaming and claim a fantastic value Welcome Bonus that could be worth as much as 1,200 if fully realized, simply register from the green button on the right.
The first thing that you notice about the Forbidden Throne slot is that it is packed with drama and that Microgaming have gone all out to give the game a real 'Hollywood' feel. The soundtrack would not be out of place on a Steven Spielberg epic or the latest Dan Brown blockbuster. With beating drums, the soundtrack is truly epic and sets the scene superbly for the slot to follow.
The backdrop of the slot is also well designed being at the juncture where the icy realm meets the land of fire, the left side of the reel displaying icy mountains and snow on the ground, while the right portrays mountains aglow with fiery lava and orange foreboding skies.
In terms of presentation, Forbidden Throne does a superb job of drawing you into its world before you even spun that first reel and that is always a good sign.
What's on the reels?
In the Forbidden Throne slot, the lower value symbols are five different colored gems which offer the lower value wins on the slot. The size of the wins you can land with these symbols are generally quite small and some of the lower value wins will not cover the cost of your initial wager. It is important to remember this when playing as this does affect the play value of the slot in the long term and does make the slot more volatile.
Higher value symbols on the reels include helmets, amulets, spell books, crowns and a snowflake but again, the payouts for three on a pay line are only smaller amounts and you need to hit four or five on a pay line to trigger a win that will offer you a profit on that spin. Again, this adds hugely to the volatility of the slot and means you need a sizeable bankroll, and a good deal of patience, in order to get the best out of the base game.
Forbidden Throne has an excellent Wild Feature and in many respects, this is the saving grace of the base game as on every spin, between one and five of the Wild Reels will appear. On each of the five reels are Stacked Wild symbols. On the first reel this is a Unicorn, on the second, it is the Guardian Sorconass, the third is a castle, the fourth is the Elven Guardian Wulthor and on the fifth reel is a phoenix emerging from the flames.
When you land one or more of these Wilds on the reels, then that reel turns completely Wild for that spin. This feature operates in all facets of the game, both the base game and also during free spins although perhaps disappointingly, especially given the size of the lower value payouts, there is no multiplier attached to any wins completed by any of the Stacked Wilds.
If you can land all five of the Stacked Wilds across the reels on any spin, then you will win the game jackpot of 500x your total bet.
Free Spins Features
To trigger the Free Spins feature, you need to land three or more of the Golden Magic Portal symbols anywhere on the reels on a single spin. When you do, you receive a variable number of free spins based on how many scatters you land.
The great news is that during the Free Spins round, not only is the Wild Reels feature still in play, but you can re-trigger the Free Spins bonus in theory an unlimited number of times by landing three or more of the Scatter symbols across the reels during the bonus.
Furthermore, your chances of winning in Free Spins is increased as both Reel 1 and Reel 5 are Wild on every spin, meaning that these reels are guaranteed to be Wild for every free spin you have.
Scatter symbols can land overlaid on top of the Stacked Wild symbol, so it is possible (although difficult) to hit five scatters on a single spin.
Other Bonus Features
Other than the features outlined above, the Forbidden Throne slot doesn't have any additional features, which is not a bad thing as often this can make the game simpler to play and easier to understand, especially for newer slots players.
Best Feature of the Forbidden Throne slot
Without doubt, the best feature of the Forbidden Throne slot is the Wild Reels feature. Indeed, without this option, which comes to the rescue of a non-winning spin on a regular basis, the base game would be almost too difficult and expensive to play.
The fact that the feature is also active during Free Spins, with both Reel 1 and 5 guaranteed to be Wild on each spin means that you are more likely to hit the bigger wins during the Free Spins round and it is nice that you can re-trigger free spins an unlimited number of times, although it has to be said that in practice, this isn't a particularly common occurrence.
What does the Forbidden Throne slot lack?
I think the Forbidden Throne slot could be improved in a number of ways. Firstly, those low value wins in the base game and free spins are a real killer at times, especially when the slot plays particularly tightly. You can go many spins without a win, or with wins that don't amount to half your total stake that you bet on the spin and this can see your bankroll take a real beating if you are not careful.
I also feel that given the extensive production values of the game, the Forbidden Throne slot would have benefited from an additional bonus game. Perhaps something which pitted the two combatants against each other (like you found in the old The Dark Knight Rises slot where Batman and Bane were pitted against each other in a battle). It just seems that there are these two epic opposing forces on the reels, but they don't actually interact that much with each other.
Finally, a jackpot of 500x your stake isn't particularly big if you are playing for smaller stakes and it is unlikely to attract players who enjoy games with a significantly bigger jackpot. However, the good news is that you can trigger multiple pay line wins, especially with the Wild Reels in operation and that can boost the value of some wins significantly.
For me Forbidden Throne is a slot which has masses of potential but just falls short of delivering something really special. The presentation of the slot is outstanding and the game-play itself is enjoyable, if a little tame considering this is meant to be a slot celebrating a battle between two mighty forces for possession of the eponymous throne.
The problem is that this is a medium to higher variance slot, which is fine for higher rollers who enjoy this type of game, but combine that with a smaller jackpot and there's not too much for lower stakes players to get hugely excited about, especially considering the play value is so poor given the relatively small winnings for 3 and 4 symbol wins.
The Free Spins round and Wild Reels bonus do offer plenty of excitement and do elevate the slot above the average and its simplicity means that it is a very easy slot to pick up and play. It is hugely enjoyable too, but it could have been so much more with just a few tweaks or the addition of another bonus game.
