Presentation

It is fair to say that the graphics on the Golden Gorilla slot could have been a little better thought out. There's nothing wrong with the subjects for the symbols, but everything is very much of the same color, in close up view and the net result is a rather complicated set of reels that makes it hard to distinguish one from the other very easily. Set against a backdrop that is also the same type of colors, it does make the game somewhat hard to distinguish.

The sound of the slot is a rather repetitive tune that on its own would be fine, but after you have heard it on repeat several times will likely have you reaching for the mute button. It does have a jungle feel too it though, so I concede that others may like it but personally it wasn't my cup of tea.

The animations are decent enough though and the individual sounds for the symbols when you land a win are nicely done. This is a medium, perhaps towards the higher end of the variance scale, with a 5x3 reel set up and up to 50 pay lines available to play on each spin. You can also wager between 1 and 10 of your chosen coin denomination on each spin too.

What's on the reels?

There are a large number of different symbols on the reels in the Golden Gorilla slot which is part of the reason why it is a more medium variance game. The lowest value symbols in the game are the rather grumpy looking alligator, plus the non-animal symbols of the fruit, the flower and the egg. These symbols offer wins ranging from 1 to 100 coins.

Moving on from those symbols and offering mid-level wins are the snake, the ape's head, the man, the lady and the blue faced monkey. Wins range from 10 coins up to 400 coins for these symbols.

Higher value symbols include the sabre toothed tiger, the dragon, the golden object and lastly a rather angry looking Wild gorilla. These latter two symbols offer small value pays for just two on a pay line and wins on these four symbols range from 5 coins up to the game jackpot of 5,000 coins on a single pay line.

Wild features

The Wild symbol is the aforementioned Wild Gorilla and when landed it will expand to cover the reels it lands on. Land five across the reels and you can win 5,000 for each pay line that you have in play on that spin, which when you consider you can have up to 50 in play per spin, is a considerable amount.

Best feature of the Golden Gorilla slot

This is a relatively simple slot in many ways with the basic Wild and Free Spins bonuses and although the Free Spins are where the most can be won, especially if you can trigger the additional bonus round available within the original Free Spins bonus, I like the fact that you can trigger the Wild symbols so readily in the base game and the fact that they expand and cover the reels means that you can win some very sizeable cash prizes playing the base game alone.

What does the Golden Gorilla slot lack?

I think there's a lack of definition between the symbols on the reels and also the backdrop which is a minor point but one that I think matters, especially on smaller screened mobile devices where it is not as easy to differentiate between different symbols. I would have also liked to have perhaps seen an additional base game bonus, such as a randomly triggered game, just to keep things a little more interesting for those longer spells playing the game.

Conclusion

There's a few small niggles with the Golden Gorilla slot, but overall, this is not a bad game at all. The high value of some of the top prizes will certainly attract higher rollers and the fact that you can select pay lines to make the game cheaper will appeal to some. The added bonus of an additional game accessible through Free Spins is also intriguing but the base game does get a little repetitive from time to time and it can be tough to hit those Scatters required to land the Free Spins bonus. Overall, this isn't the worst Rival Gaming slot I have played, but it isn't necessarily one of the best either.

• Presentation: 11 / 20 - For me, this is one of the bigger let downs of the Golden Gorilla slot. There's not enough color differentiation between the symbols themselves and the backdrop and the result is a slot that makes it hard to spot when you have a winner by the naked eye. Also some of the main features of the slot, such as the animations are a bit lost when the colors used all kind of merge into one another. The sound is decent enough, but the tune is a bit repetitive although the sound effects of the animals are very well done.
• Game-play: 13 / 20 - There's nothing inherently bad with the game play of the Golden Gorilla slot, it just isn't the most exciting base game I have played. Free Spins can be tough to hit and you do find yourself playing a fair number of spins before you eventually get a trigger. The positive points are the Expanding Wilds which can lead to some sizeable and much needed wins in the base game without the need to trigger Free Spins.
• Bonus Features: 16 / 20 - Once you get to trigger the Free Spins bonus, then the rewards are generally worth it, you get between 15 and 50 Free Spins to play through, which is generous, although only a relatively small proportion of them are winners. The fact you can trigger an additional bonus game from within Free Spins does give this section a little added excitement and I think lifts this part of the game very nicely. Add to that those Expanding Wild symbols and the bonus features are what makes this slot as playable as it is.
• Entertainment Factor: 13 / 20 - Two things would have improved the score in terms of entertainment for me, firstly having a better choice of colors for the game to make it easier to differentiate between the symbols and secondly having an additional base game bonus to break up the game when you are in a long session of spins between triggering the Free Spins bonus game. Once the bonuses are triggered, the game does get exciting, but it can be a little quiet and dull in between.
• Play Value: 12 / 20 - As a medium variance slot, this offers a nice mix between risk and reward for players however I do have one or two grumbles. There can be too many non-paying wins in the Free Spins bonus game, although the larger number of Free Spins does make that less of an issue. More of a problem is when you get a long streak of low or non-existent base game wins which can eat into your bankroll a fair bit.
• Overall 65 / 100 - Golden Gorilla is a fun and enjoyable slot, that does have a few niggles and issues that I think if ironed out, would have made the game a lot more exciting and enjoyable.
