Monkeys are rather cute and intelligent creatures and that is the general premise is the theme of the Saucify Gaming slot Monkey Business, an assortment of monkeys doing a variety of jobs, all in a retro-styled theme.

This 5x3 reel slot has 20 pay lines playable (you can select how many to play) and you can also select your coin size and the number of coins to bet, which makes working out how much your bet is somewhat problematic. A jackpot of 5,000 coins is well worth taking note of however.

So is this game a howling mad success, or will you be a monkey's uncle if you decide to spend some cash playing the game? We decided to take a closer look at the slot to find out for ourselves.

Presentation

Welcome back to 1985! To say that the Monkey Business slots looks a bit retro is an understatement. I really hope this was a purposeful decision by Saucify Games as the graphics look like they have been ported over from an 48k ZX Spectrum title in the 1980s, and not a particularly good one at that. It is fair to say that I was a little under-whelmed with how the slot looks. In truth, it looks like a game designed by a class of school children.

That also extends to the music which is essentially the same few seconds of music looped over and over. The sound effects in the game are better though but there's another gripe with the payment system. I am not a fan of ones which use lions, then coins and a button for your coin size. It just complicates things and the fact that your bet is shown in coins, rather than value, makes you unsure of just how much you are betting.

What's on the reels?

There are a total of 12 symbols on the reels in the Monkey Business slot, two of which are the Wild and the Scatter symbol and the remaining ten are the standard symbols. One positive point is the lack of playing card low symbols and instead we have a number of business or monkey-themed objects as lower value symbols.

This includes a banana, a tool belt, a mobile phone, a laptop computer and a check. Wins on these symbols range from 8 coins up to 400 coins for five of the check symbols across the reels.

Higher value wins come in the shape of the five different (and somewhat poorly realized) monkeys. Each of the Monkeys offers a win for just two symbols landed on the reels, which is a positive. Wins range from just 2 coins up to 5,000 coins.

Wild features

The gorilla stockbroker is the in game Wild symbol and it can substitute for any of the standard symbols on the reels apart from the Scatter symbol. Unfortunately, it does not offer any multipliers attached to wins it is part of and nor does it offer any wins based on landing its own symbol across the reels.

Free Spins features

The Pay Packet symbol, with peanuts coming out is the in-game Scatter symbol and you need to land three or more of these symbols to trigger the Free Spins bonus round. The more of the Scatters you land, the more Free Spins you will earn.

Three Scatters will see you earn 10 Free Spins, four sees 15 Free Spins while if you can land all five then you will win the maximum 30 Free Spins. Rather disappointingly, there is no pay out for landing three or more Scatters on the reels.

Other bonus features

Other than the bonus features outlined above, there are no additional bonus features on the Monkey Business slot.

Best feature of the Monkey Business slot

I'll be brutally honest here and say that it is not exactly rich pickings when it comes to the bonuses that are available on the Monkey Business slot. It's the Wild or the Free Spins and while the Wild triggers most often, the best value to be found in the slot lies in the Free Spins bonus round. Especially, if you can trigger with the four or five Scatters, rather than the three.

What does the Monkey Business slot lack?

First off, I feel that the presentation on the slot is sorely lacking and it looks almost amateurish compared to some other games, even other retro slots. I understand that this may well be the look that Saucify wanted for this game, but even so, it looks and sounds very poor and almost as if it has been ported over from a much older console or computer. I also feel a lack of payout on the Scatter, no Wild multiplier bonus and the fact that you are never really sure how much you are playing with are also negative strikes against the game.

Conclusion

I have to be honest and say that the Monkey Business slot didn't do it for me, despite the fact that it is generally one of Saucify Games more popular slots. I felt the look of the game was poor and it looked like it had been ported directly out of the mid 1980s. The design of the game looked hurried and rushed and the sound was also disappointing. There are some positives, lower variance, regular wins and a decent jackpot for this type of slot, but it is a game that I would not personally come back to play any time soon.

Ratings

  • Presentation: 6 / 20 - Saucify Games are usually among the most best looking and pleasing on the eye that you will find and Monkey Business is a real shock to the system. I understand that they wanted it to be a retro game, but this slot doesn't just look retro, it looks like a game that Bill Gates might have programmed on his first 1K computer. It's cartoon-styling just doesn't really work and gives the symbols a somewhat grotesque look which is a shame as the idea for the slot was sound.
  • Game-play: 10 / 20 - I suppose with the retro theme the game-play was always going to be a little simplistic and that is the case here. The one positive is that as a lower variance game, you do tend to win pretty frequently and you do get some nice mixes of wins in the base game, but there's nothing exciting in the slot to keep you wanting to play. It doesn't have that appeal that the best slots have.
  • Bonus Features: 10 / 20 - The bonus features are essentially a Wild and Free Spins bonus round which are pretty much the baseline for any slot game today. There's nothing very special about either bonus and in truth the fact that the Wild has no multiplier and no payout for landing Scatters makes them even less appealing than in other games that have the same bonuses but which do offer these features.
  • Entertainment Factor: 9 / 20 - It is odd as I actually won a fairly decent amount on around my 10th spin of this slot but even that could not warm me up to the game. I didn't really enjoy this slot. The use of coins throughout meant I couldn't really relate to how much it was costing me per spin, or what my wins were worth. The look of it puts you off and while the base game is OK, the bonuses are just bog standard. All in all it left me somewhat cold.
  • Play Value: 15 / 20 - If there was one positive to the Monkey Business slot then for me it was the play value. As a lower variance game, you do win a lot and those wins can vary in size which does keep your bankroll topped up nicely. The problem is that while you may have the cash to play, would you really want to given the issues with the slot that I have outlined above?
  • Overall 50 / 100 - This is not the first slot that has proven popular with people that I just don't see the appeal of and I doubt it will be the last. At best, this is a basic slot with below average graphics and music, a very simplistic approach to bonuses and lower variance. The jackpot does make it a bit more interesting but I do feel there are markedly better examples of Saucify Slots games to pick from, and also better retro-styled slots to play too.

Good Luck!
