Few sports are quite as spectacularly colorful, or wonderfully cheesy as the world of Mexican wrestling. These carefully choreographed "battles" between masked heroes attract millions of viewers and attendees at events across Mexico and has even spawned a film, Nacho Libre, that starred Jack Black in the title role.

Well Realtime Gaming decided that it was about time that this subject was the topic of a slot game and the result is the Lucha Libre slot. We've seen a few Mexican-themed slots in our time but few are quite so stereotypical Mexican as this one, right down from the base presentation, to the symbols on the reels.

So does Lucha Libre win the battle of the slots by a pin fall submission, or is this more a stooge, ready to be beaten up by one of the bigger slots on the block? Let's take a closer look and find out beginning with our brief overview of the main facets of the slot.

Presentation

As you would expect, the Lucha Libre slot is set against the backdrop of a stadium which is encircled around a wrestling ring. The music is typically Mexican and even if you were to play the slot blindfold, you would know immediately that this is a slot based on some form of Mexican culture.

The five reels dominate the center of the screen and the graphics used are more cartoon style than realistic, but this does work very well with the nature of the slot. The help bar is situated on the right of the screen and you can discover more about the slot and all the pay line by clicking on this, while on the left hand side of the screen is a pay line selector/deselector button.

All the main buttons players use are at the foot of the screen with the ability to increase the speed of each spin, a pay line selector, an Auto-Play feature, the buttons to increase or decrease your bet size and of course the spin button. There is also a display at the foot of the screen which shows you how much you have won on a successful spin. It's all very simple to understand and you will be spinning the reels in no time at all.

What's on the reels?

The symbols on the reels are all based on Mexico and the notion of watching or indulging in a spot of wrestling. The lower value symbols include the Chilli Pepper, a bottle of cerveza which offer payouts of between 5 and 100 coins depending on how many you land on a pay line. The Chips and Guacamole and stack of posters offer payouts of 5 coins to 125 coins.

Medium sized wins are on offer from the TV set and Tequila bottle of between 10 and 200 coins, while the Newspaper offers payouts of 25 coins up to 250 coins. However the big money prizes including the jackpot can be won by landing either the Lucha Libre Championship belt, the gold cup or the commentator symbols across the reels as this offers payouts of between 5 coins and 1,000 coins.

In addition, these three higher paying symbols also offer payouts for when you land two symbols on a pay line, rather than three and although these wins are low in value, they do add up over a session to help give the game slightly better value to players.

Wild Features

The Lucha Libre slot features a number of different masked wrestlers, Taco Malo and Guacamolio, as the in game Wild symbols and these are grouped together on the third reel of the slot only. When landed they can replace the symbols outlined above to create winning pay lines but they can also perform some other useful tasks.

The Wrestler Wilds are also stacked on the third reel and if you can land a stack of wrestlers on the reel that covers it completely, then your wrestler will award a 2x multiplier on any cash prizes won on that spin, or they can jump onto at least another reel to offer more Wild symbols on that spin and thus increase the potential value of your win.

Free Spins Features

The Free Spins Feature triggers after the Time To Rumble feature (which is explained in the section below), so this is slightly out of sync with how the game plays. But when you have triggered your free games bonus from the Time To Rumble Feature, the free spins will begin.

However, if you have triggered any of the Mask Of Fiery Doom Spin in your free spins, they will take place before your free spins start. These free spins see four of the reels packed with Fiery Mask scatter symbols and these symbols hold in position while the other reel spins and this can offer you some massive payouts.

Once these bonus spins have been played out, then your standard Free Spins round will start, some of which offer you a multiplier of 2x the standard win, others of which offer you simply the 1x standard multiplier, depending on what bonus you trigger in the Time to Rumble Feature.

Other Bonus Features

When you land three or more of the Wrestling Ring scatter symbols across the reels in the base game then you trigger the Time to Rumble feature, which is the prelude bonus game before the Free Spins bonus rounds.

In this round you get to take on the persona of a Mexican wrestler who has to select between one of three moves to defeat their opponent. The moves are of different difficulty levels, with the more difficult moves to pull off, being the ones that offer the greater reward.

There are three moves you can pick from, the high risk Spanko Especial, the medium risk Supremo Foot of Fury and the Thunderclap Bam Bam is the easier of the three moves. There are also two possible outcomes for each move. If you nail it, you receive the higher of the two prizes on offer. Fail It and you receive a smaller bonus.

Each prize consists of a stated number of free spins and either a 1x or 2x multiplier. Some prizes also offer a Mask Of Fiery Doom Spin alongside the free spins and if you win one of these prizes, then you will play these spins prior to playing through your free spins.

Best Feature of the Lucha Libre slot

The best feature of the Lucha Libre slot is definitely the bonus games. They are not the easiest to trigger however, so you may have to play through a fair few base game spins in order to get the bonus triggered. However when you do the rewards could be sizeable, especially if you can trigger the Mask of Fiery Doom feature.

The fact that you can trigger six different free spins bonuses and the way you select them by picking from wrestling moves is a nice touch which really ties in very well with the theme of the slot and is a great way to generate the bonus.

I think the presentation, while undoubtedly clichéd, is still very well done, especially when you trigger some of the bonus features and hear the bell dinging and the thud of wrestlers battling each other. All in all, as you would expect from Realtime Gaming, this is a very nicely presented slot.

What does Lucha Libre slot lack?

The biggest issue with Lucha Libre isn't so much what the slot lacks, it is that the slot can play so very tight at times. I've put the variance on this slot as medium, but there are certainly times when this plays like a high variance game.

Most base game wins are a mix of small and medium sized wins, with the odd larger win thrown in on the rare occasion and that is fine, but what does grate on the nerves a little is how hard it is to trigger the bonus games. You can play through hundreds and hundreds of spins and get nowhere near the bonus features, which is a real shame as they are the most fun part of the slot to play.

Conclusion

Lucha Libre is a fun, enjoyable slot on a somewhat unusual theme that works very well in terms of presentation and the features on the slot. The game-play is good and the base game is enjoyable enough but the slot is let down at times by how difficult it can be to trigger the bonus features and the fact that the jackpot isn't that big.

The slot is certainly quirky and enjoyable and is certainly a game aimed more at the more experienced slot player with a larger bankroll, who wants to play a game that doesn't offer regular small payouts, but a chance of some big wins on rare occasions.

Ratings

  • Presentation: 15 / 20 - I'll be honest, the soundtrack to Lucha Libre will slowly drive you insane after a little while, but in general the presentation of the slot is excellent with the animations when you trigger the bonus round a nice touch.
  • Game-Play: 13 / 20 - Lucha Libre is a fun slot to play in the base game with plenty of ways to win and a good mix of wins from lower value wins up to some high value payouts possible. However this is a medium to higher variance slot without any doubt and as such, it is a game that needs patience and a decent bankroll to enjoy the best of.
  • Bonus Features: 14 / 20 - The different bonus features of the Lucha Libre slot are excellent and really bring the game to life nicely and enhance the base game considerably. Although all three bonuses are linked by the same strand and play into each other, they do give the slot an added dimension and the possibility of some great value wins.
  • Entertainment Factor: 13 / 20 - This is a fun and enjoyable slot to play and it packs a lot into the five reels.
  • Play Value: 7 / 20 - This is where the Lucha Libre slot does suffer unfortunately. The base game can play very tight at times and there are periods when you have to play through hundreds of spins to trigger the bonus features and if you are playing for larger wagers across all available pay lines then that soon becomes very expensive indeed.
  • Overall 62 / 100 - Lucha Libre is a fun slot but one that does have a bit of a bite to it if you are not careful. The bonus games are great but can take a long time to trigger and this means careful bankroll management is essential in order to get the best from the slot.

Good luck!
