The Ten Suns slot from Rival Gaming is based on an ancient Chinese fable about a time when Ten suns would take it in turns to travel across the sky on each of the ten-day Chinese week. However, the suns grew tired of this routine and decided to appear together on one day, making life on earth impossible.
The Emperor Yao asked Di Jun, the father of the ten suns, to ask his children to appear one at a time, but they refused, so Di Jun sent an archer named Yi with a bow and arrow to frighten his errant children. Yi however shot nine of the ten suns, leaving just the one we see today. For his sins, Yi was condemned to live life as a mortal on earth.
It's a rather fantastic story and it is a fitting backdrop to the Ten Suns slot given its oriental theme and and the way the slot looks and plays. Let's now take a closer look at the mechanics of the game itself, by taking a quick look at its key features.

Presentation
The setting for the Ten Suns slot is a brightly lit glade, which has cherry blossom in the trees surrounding it. It is a typically Oriental theme and the styling of the design makes it obvious, even without looking at the reels that this is another slot based on eastern culture.
The reels are large and somewhat cluttered to be truthful. The multiplier trail (more on this later) is shown on the left of the screen, while the main controls are at the foot of the reels including the Coin Selector, Auto Play, Bet Max and Spin buttons. There are 25 pay lines in play on the reels and these cannot be selected or deselected.
Rival have really gone to town giving this slot an eastern theme so much so that you would think that this game has been taken from the casino halls of Macau and placed online and to be fair, given the subject matter of the slot, it works very well indeed.
What's on the reels?
On the reels are the low value symbol sand there are five of these and they are all Chinese typographic characters and they offer a range of payouts from just 2 coins, up to 75 coins. There are five medium value wins available with the paper lantern, the geisha girl, the coins, the bearded man and the lily offering wins from 8 coins up to 600 coins.
Alongside these symbols are the two highest value wins in the game, which is the rather cruel looking bird (which offers wins of between 40 and 750 coins) and the golden frog, which offers wins of between 50 and 1000 coins when landed five on a pay line.
All the three other symbols on the reels are triggers for a variety of different bonus features in the game and we'll take a closer look at each of them now.
Wild features
The archer Yi is the Wild symbol in the game and this serves two features. Firstly, he acts as a standard wild symbol, substituting for any of the standard symbols listed above to create winning pay lines when landed on the second, third or fourth reels.
However, Yi is also a directionally expanding wild and this means that when he lands, he can expand horizontally or vertically across the reels. He does this by shooting an arrow which moves across the screen, turning all the symbols it passes over Wild. This feature, although simple, can lead to some very sizeable base game wins, especially when the Wild expands horizontally across the reels from the fourth reel.
Free Spins features
The Free Spins game is triggered by the Dragon symbol which when landed three or more across the reels will trigger 5 free spins for 3 scatters, 7 free spins for four or 10 free spins for five.
During the Free Spins bonus round, the Multiplier Trail becomes active. The five lowest paying symbols (the Chinese characters) are removed from the reels and all the remaining icons become what are called in this game "Drop Icons". This means that when you land a winning pay line with these symbols during free spins, they will disappear and be replaced with symbols dropping down from above.
This can then trigger additional wins as the new symbols fall into place and when they do, the multiplier trail will increase with each Drop Icon win triggered up to a maximum of 10x the standard bet.
Other bonus features
The other bonus in the game is the Treasure Chest Pick and Click bonus which is triggered when you land three or more of the Treasure Chest icons anywhere across the screen on a single spin.
When this happens the Treasure Chests will remain on screen and you get to pick from one of the three shown to reveal a cash prize. Your cash prize is calculated as a multiple of your total bet.
Best feature of the Ten Suns slot
The Ten Suns slot does have a number of decent features but for me the best is the Expanding Wild. The reason for this is that it is a somewhat volatile bonus. You can land it and see no expansion as it will only expand if a win is possible, but you can then land it on the fourth reel and see it expand across the reels to produce a big base game win, usually across multiple pay lines.
That's not to say the other bonuses on the Ten Suns slot are not up to scratch, they are all excellent but given how often the Wild bonus triggers and the potential rewards it can offer in the base game, the fact it is a regular contributor to your balance makes this my top feature here.
What does the Ten Suns slot lack?
Ten Suns is one of those slots that kind of grows on you. At first it looks nothing special, but after a few spins you start to appreciate the subtlety of the game and how the bonuses work and it becomes a far more enjoyable game. So for me, the one thing that this slot lacks, especially for more western audiences unfamiliar with the Ten Suns legend, is that instant appeal. However, don't overlook this slot based on that alone as this really is a cracking little game.
Conclusion
When I loaded up the Ten Suns slot I was initially feeling a little deflated at reviewing another oriental-themed game as they are ten-a-penny nowadays. However I am delighted to say that the Ten Suns slot passed all my expectations and provided me with a hugely enjoyable review process. The slot is very well thought out, the bonuses are fair and rewarding with the right amount of difficulty to hit and the base game is enhanced markedly by the Expanding Wild bonus. This is an excellent slot and one you should definitely give some time to.
