More Game Themes
The sea has inspired many different slots over the years and in truth, it has produced a mixed bag of games. Some have been absolutely fantastic to play, others less so and a couple have been really poor. We're confident however that Rival Gaming's slot Whale O'Winnings is one that will have you having a 'whale of a time' rather than being tossed to the sharks.
This is an interesting slot that is very customizable with the number of lines, coins per line and the size of coin all fully customizable meaning that it is a great game for those that like to have exact control over how much they want to wager on each spin. The jackpot is 7,777 coins in the base game and with coins ranging from 0.01 to 0.25, that equates to a decent amount of money.
So is this one watery themed slot that is best left undiscovered at the bottom of the ocean, or should we be heading to our chosen casino to try this game out, especially seeing as it is one of Rival Gaming's most popularly played slots each month?
Let's dive into the slot now and take a look for ourselves at how it plays.

Presentation
The Whale O'Winnings slot has nice presentation. This starts with the five reels being transparent and against the back drop of a blue sea and rocky outcrop underwater, it does give the slot a shimmering and rather ethereal, relaxing feel. This is echoed by the music which is more atmospheric and awe-inspiring than dramatic, and this does set up a very nice ambiance for the slot to be played in.
The main controls are at the foot of the reels and these can allow you to tailor your bet as you see fit and you can even select and deselect lines, if you prefer, though we feel the game is best played with all possible lines in play. The animations on the reels are simple but effective and overall, the slot looks and plays very nicely indeed.
What's on the reels?
There are a fair number of different symbols on the reels and the lowest value of these is the playing card low symbols. These range from 9 through to the Ace but generally only offer low value wins for 3 or 4 symbols across the reels, starting at just 4 coins for three of the 9 symbols. Five aces though will land you 200 coins, so there is a huge step up between landing three or four symbols and that crucial fifth symbol.
The other symbols are more based on the aquatic theme of the slot and these include a lifesaver, an anemone, a piece of coral, a clam, a bag of coins (which is a bit out of keeping with the rest of the theme), a sea lion and a treasure chest, which is the biggest paying of the standard symbols in the game offering 50 coins for three on a line and a whopping 2,500 coins for five across the reels.
Other than these 13 symbols there are just two others on the reels, the Wild and the Scatter and we will explore more about what these symbols do below.
Wild features
The Orca Killer Whale, Ollie the Orca, is the in game Wild and this can appear on any of the reels on any spin. When the symbol lands it can replace any of the standard symbols outlined above to help create winning lines. When it does, it also awards a 3x multiplier for that win, which is one of the best ways to get some value in the base game in particular.
Free Spins features
The Dolphin Scatter symbol is the key to unlocking Free Spins on the Whale O'Winnings slot. Land three anywhere across the five reels and you will receive 10 Free Spins, land four and you will land 15 Free Spins, but if you can land five across the reels then you will receive 50 Free Spins. This, if you can trigger it, is by far the best bonus but be warned, it is difficult to hit and you will usually end up with 10 or 15 Free Spins in the bonus round.
During Free Spins all wins come with a 2x multiplier as standard which is good value.
Other bonus features
Other than the bonus features listed above, there are no other additional bonus features on the Whale O'Winnings slot.
Best feature of the Whale O'Winnings slot
There's no doubt that if you can trigger it, then the 50 Free Spins bonus is the best aspect of the Whale O'Winnings slot, although it is extremely difficult to land this particular bonus and you will instead usually end up with a much smaller number of spins when you can trigger the bonus. The presentation and sound of the slot is also nicely done.
What does the Whale O'Winnings slot lack?
For me the base game is a little too punitive at times. There are a lot of non-winning spins, which is fine in a medium variance game, but the fact that many winning spins offer just a small amount of money and those bigger value wins are hard to hit, makes this feel like the slot is not really your best friend. I also feel a random base game bonus would have livened this part of the game up. Free Spins is also fiendishly difficult to trigger at times.
Conclusion
Whale O'Winnings is a bit of a tricky slot to categorize. On the one hand, it does have a lot of positive points. The presentation is sound, the 50 Free Spins is a great sounding bonus and the fact you can win up to 7,777 coins is a real boon. However, while these are the headlines of the slot, your chances of hitting them are very small and in truth, you tend to get much less than what is offered and I think that kind of sums this game up. It promises much, but only delivers on a small proportion of that, which is a pity.
