Presentation
This is one of Realtime Gaming's older slots so what you essentially have here is a game that is a few years old and was designed before the company started to get a little more forward thinking when it comes to their slot development and presentation.
So, essentially, Crystal Waters is a rather basic slot, based on the type of game which you would see 10 or 20 of in an arcade or casino. There's a total of 20 pay lines available, which can be individually selected and you can bet from $0.20 (maximum number of pay line) up to $100 per spin.
The setting seems to be a Caribbean flecked sea vista with golden sand islands dotted around and yachts dancing across the waves. The reels are designed to look as it they are under the water and underneath them are the key controls of the slot, the bet and line selectors and the Auto-play and Spin buttons. All you need to do is select the number of lines to play (all 20 is best) and the size of your bet per pay line played and then hit the spin button.
What's on the reels?
On the reels of the Crystal Waters slot you would expect to find a myriad of all things nautical but for some reason, Realtime Gaming decided to stick with playing card low symbols for this slot. That's a badly judged decision in my view as there are so many items that could have been lower value symbols that would have tied in perfectly with the theme.
The one positive in selecting these is that it does delineate between the higher value symbols and the lower more easily, but it does seem a tad lazy in my view.
The higher value symbols are all nautical themed and include a conch shell, a seahorse, a school of fish and a turtle and all of these offer payouts for two symbols on a pay line. The maximum standard payout available is 2,000 coins for five turtles on a pay line, but other prizes are smaller.
There are only two other symbols on the reels, the Wild symbol and the Scatter and these are directly linked to the key features and we'll explore these in more detail below.
Wild Features
The Wild symbol (called the Substitute symbol in this game) is the dolphin symbol and these only appear on the second and fourth reel of the slot. They can substitute for any of the low or high value symbols outlined above to create winning pay lines on a spin, but you cannot use the Substitute as an extra Scatter symbol.
When you land a winning pay line or more with a Wild symbol then the standard cash prize for that is doubled. This means that the top prize available for all the high and low value symbols outlined above is doubled when you land a Dolphin symbol as one or more of the constituent parts of that pay line.
Free Spins Features
The Yacht Symbol is the in game scatter in the Crystal Waters slot and it serves two purposes. Landing three or more across the reels will award you cash prize of either 3x (for three scatters), 15x (for four) or 200x (for five) of your total bet.
In addition, three or more of the Yacht Symbols also triggers free spins where you receive a total of 15 free spins. During free spins , you may also find a Bonus Fish symbol on the middle third reel of the slot. This acts as an additional Wild symbol for the duration of the free spins bonus round.
Furthermore, any prizes won using a Bonus Fish symbol will also earn a multiplier which is randomly selected of either 2x, 4x or 8x the stated prize. Best Feature of the Crystal Waters slot
The best feature of the Crystal Waters slot is undoubtedly the Free Spins bonus game, but that also comes with a proviso as it can be notoriously difficult to unlock in the base game and it can take a fair few spins, a bit of cash and a fair amount of patience to finally trigger the feature.
When you do though, it is worth it as with that Bonus Fish on the middle reel, if you can land that in conjunction with one of the Dolphin Wilds on the reels, then that can really result in some very big wins, especially if that win is a four or five symbol one.
What does the Crystal Waters slot lack?
In truth what this slot lacks is a bit of excitement. The decision not to replace the playing card lows on the reels doesn't help immerse you in the game as it should. You are well aware due to this and the somewhat basic sound that this is simply a slot game and not a particularly exciting one at that due to how it looks and sounds.
More recent Realtime Gaming slots don't suffer from this so it is interesting to see how far the company has come in a short space of time from developing many slots similar to this in the same style and to the same blueprint, into newer games which pack in more features and which offer slot gamers a far more immersive and enjoyable experience.
Conclusion
So, not this isn't a slot about an American singer-songwriter, but instead about the sea, but it hasn't been done particularly well to be honest and it seems as it little thought went into developing the slot and creating the right atmosphere for the game.
The features are basic and somewhat rudimentary too but they can be rewarding if you hit them at the right time and get lucky, especially with that additional Wild symbol during the free spins round. The ability to re-trigger free spins is also a better feature of the slot.
Crystal Waters isn't a slot that isn't going to win any design awards and it is more medium variance game in my view, it will have its fans but there are other, better and more exciting aquatic based slots you can play if this type of game is your thing.
