To be fair, the link between the ancient Chinese warriors and this retro-styled slot from Microgaming extends only as far as the graphic on the front of the console (depicting a Samurai swordsman in mid thrust) and a couple of symbols on the reels. Other than that, there's little else to link this retro-styled slot with these feared warriors.
That's not a bad thing though as every slot needs a theme and sometimes, a theme can be overdone, so sometimes it is good to get back to basics and that is precisely what you will find on this slightly older Microgaming slot.
One of the first things you will note about the game is that the console itself is set up to resemble the electro-mechanical slots that were so popular from the 1980s on wards in arcades, bingo halls and similar the length and breadth of the country. This is a nice touch as for older gamers, it does bring back happy memories of standing with a pocket full of coins, slowly slotting them into the game to try and trigger a big win.
So the game console may well be retro themed but that theme is also continued with the choice of symbols across the three reels.
First up, let's get the basics of the slot clear. This is a 3-reel slot with three paylines. There's no Scatter symbol in this game, no bonus round, no free spins, no rolling reels or expanding Wilds or anything that would hallmark this as a modern slot. Instead what you get is good, solid old fashioned slot gaming.
Is there a place for that in the modern slot arena which is populated by games packed with bonus features and offering prizes, sometimes that can be in excess of millions of dollars? Without doubt there is. Retro gaming is making a comeback as a number of players, especially older players or novice players, enjoy a game which is far easier to understand and fewer options available.
For those people in particular, then what is on offer on the Samurai Sevens slot will be a boon.
The symbols on the reels are also very easy to follow and equally retro. There are three different Bar symbols, Single Bar, Double Bar and a Triple Bar and if you can land any three of these bar symbols on a single payline, you will win the smallest win (5 coins).
However, land three of the same bar on a payline and you can win from between 25 (for the single bar) up to 100 coins (for the Treble Bar)
There are only three other symbols on the reels. Two of these are symbols linked in with the Samurai theme. One a Dragon symbol (which offers wins of 300 coins when landed three abreast on a winning payline) and the other is the Samurai throwing star symbol which offers 500 coin wins when landed three on a payline.
However, the biggest wins possible on the Samurai 7s slot comes from the final symbol which, as the slot name suggests, is the Number 7. This symbol also acts as a Wild symbol and when landed on a reel can substitute for any other symbol to create a winning payline.
However it is when you land the 7s on each of the paylines that the biggest wins are found. Land it on Payline one (across the middle) and you'll win 1,500 coins. Payline two (top of the reels) is a 3,000 coin win and Payline three (bottom of the reels) offers the in game jackpot of 6,000 coins.
More experienced players, or those that prefer to use the feature, can click on the Expert button which allows them to set up an Autoplay option, which will spin the reels for a predetermined amount of spins as chosen by the player.
Samurai 7's is fast to play, affordable for all and offers retro gaming with a decent sized jackpot available if you hit lucky. This is one retro slot you should pay close attention to.
