Play Double Deck Blackjack!

Experienced casino players know that if there is one game that offers them a decent chance of making a profit more so than any other on the casino floor, it is the card game Blackjack.

On a standard game of Blackjack, the house edge is very small and that means that players stand a better chance of winning.

To swing the odds more in their favor the casino will often use several decks of cards when running a game. The more decks of cards in play, the greater the casinos odds of winning, which is why some casinos offer games with four or sometimes more decks in play.

It is therefore refreshing to discover that Bovada have bucked the trend for making games with an increasing number of decks and instead are offering a new game called Double Deck Blackjack. This game is played with just two decks, which means the odds are more in favor of the player than other Blackjack games with more decks in play.

Let's take a closer look at this exciting new offering from Bovada by looking at how you can play the game.

How do I play Double Deck Blackjack?

Before we get into the nuances of the game, it is best to clarify what the aims are in a game of Blackjack. It is not, as many people think, to get as near to 21 as possible, but your aim is instead to beat the dealer's hand by scoring closer to 21 than they do, without achieving a total of more than 21 (in which case you bust and the dealer automatically wins).

If you win the hand, then whatever you have bet is returned to you with an equal amount of cash from the dealer, an even money return on your bet.

If your score and the dealers score is a tie, then the outcome is a push and your bet is returned to you.

All cards in the deck are worth face value apart from the following:

  • The Ace can be worth 1 or 11 points depending on your hand
  • Ten, Jack, Queen and Kings are all worth 10 points.

At the start of the hand, the player will make their wager and then they will be dealt two cards face up. The dealer will also be dealt two cards, one face up (the up-card) and the other face down. You then look at the total of the two cards combined in your hand and compare that with the dealers card and you can then decide whether to add more cards to your hand or not. You can do this in a number of ways:

  • Stand - This is when you do not add any cards to your hand. You believe you have the strongest hand already and are ready to compare your hand with the dealers to see who wins.
  • Hit - You add another card from the pack to your hand to hopefully improve the strength of your hand without going bust.
  • Double - Here you place a bet equal to the size of your initial bet to receive one more card from the pack, but after you receive that card you must Stand.

While most hands will see you use one of the three options above, there are certain situations in the game that arise that will allow you to make other decisions.

  • Split - When you are dealt a hand with two cards of equal value (such as two ten-ranked cards, or two sevens for example), you can split the hand into two individual hands, both of which will be played against the dealers hand. When you split, you need to place another bet of the same value as your initial bet to cover the second hand you are playing. You can only elect to split once per game.
  • Insurance - If the dealer deals themselves an Ace as their up-card, then their chances of hitting a Blackjack is much higher. You can purchase insurance at this point for half the amount of your total bet. If the dealer hits blackjack then your insurance bet pays out at 2/1.

To assist the player with their decision-making in Blackjack there are a fixed set of rules that must be followed by the player or the dealer when playing a game. These rules for Double Deck Blackjack are as follows:

  • Minimum bet of $1, Maximum bet of $250
  • A blackjack score of 21 on the first two cards dealt (any Ace, plus a ten value card) offers a payout of 3/2 rather than even money. If you receive a pair of aces and split them, or a pair of tens and split them and then make a 21 after the split, this is not considered a true blackjack and will pay out at even money.
  • The Insurance bet pays 2/1.
  • The dealer must Stand on any hand of soft 17 or better.
  • The player can only Split once per game.
  • Split Aces can only receive one more card, after which the player must Stand.
  • The player can Double any two cards
  • The two decks are shuffled by the dealer after each hand is completed.

Blackjack is one of the simplest and most enjoyable of all casino games to follow and it is a game players will have likely experienced before when playing card games at home. This makes Double Deck Blackjack a perfect option for players that want to enjoy the game and experience the thrill of winning a hand regularly.
