We have already talked at length in this blog about the popularity of film and TV tie-in slots and how they prove to be a winner both for the casino and developer, but also for the film and TV franchise in question who gain extra publicity from their slot.

Ever since the first licensed slot, Tomb Raider, was released a decade ago, there has been a steady stream of slots based on some of the most popular films and TV shows of the past 20 years or more.

Indeed as the 2014 launches of the popular Terminator 2 and Jurassic Park slots show, there is a real thirst for these hugely popular licensed slots, even if the film that it is based on was made many, many years ago.

It may be ten years since the first film and TV tie in slot was released but the popularity of them shows no sign of slowing down. This is perfectly shown by just how popular the Game of Thrones slot was when it too was released towards the tail end of 2014.

Based on the TV series, this popular slot offered two distinct games (15 payline and 243 paylines) and proved to be one of the smash hit slots of 2014.

And now Microgaming have announced that another hugely popular film from a few years ago, the 2011 Paul Feig directed Bridesmaids, will be the focus for their next big slot release, due to hit casinos this August.

What was Bridesmaids?

Bridesmaids was a film directed by the new Ghostbusters director Paul Feig which was first released back in May 2011. Starring Kristen Wiig as Annie, friend of the bride Lillian (played by Maya Rudolph) who take on the role of Maid of Honour for Lilian's forthcoming wedding, with somewhat hilarious consequences.

The film also starred Rebel Wilson, Matt Lucas, Chris O'Dowd, Melissa McCarthy and the three members of the pop group Wilson Phillips.

The story focused on the relationship between Annie and her friend Lillian, and how Annie's role of Maid of Honour was questioned by another bridesmaid who felt that she should have been given that role and tries to usurp Annie at every available opportunity.

The film proved to be a hit with fans and was nominated for two Oscars.

What will the Bridesmaids slot feature?

Although exact details of the slot are not yet available, the new Bridesmaids slot has had some of its key elements confirmed in a press release by Microgaming earlier this year.

The company has confirmed that the slot will be a 5-reel slot and that it will also consist of several multi-level bonus games that will feature all of the main characters from the film as well as having several hilarious clips from the movie triggered at various points in the game.

Users will be able to play online and via a mobile browser it has also been confirmed.

Roger Raatgever, the CEO of Microgaming stated:

"Bridesmaids is a comedy classic! The storyline, characters and genuinely hilarious stand-out scenes combine to make it one of the most successful comedy films of all time. We're thrilled to have signed another licensing agreement with Universal. Furthermore, the brand adds a completely new dimension to our branded game portfolio - we're excited for its launch later in the year."

The slot is slated for release some time in August this year.

Does Bridesmaids indicate a change in emphasis for licensed slots for Microgaming?

What is interesting about this news, as the statement by the CEO Roger Raatgever stated, is that the Bridesmaid slot will represent something of a departure from the traditional licensed slot that Microgaming have traditionally produced.

In the past, the vast majority of online slots that have been tied to a Film or TV show have been based very much on action films. The likes of the already mentioned Terminator 2, Jurassic Park, Tomb Raider, but also Game of Thrones, Battlestar Galactica, Gladiator, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, being plenty of evidence about how well this particular genre of film can be used to produce a top quality slot.

However, if there is something missing from Microgaming's current line up of licensed slots, it is a slot that focuses more on the humorous element than the action element and Bridesmaids could well be the first Microgaming slot to address this.

Other companies have produced slots based on comedy films with a high degree of success and it seems likely that Microgaming have realised this and are now taking the first steps to broadening the types of films they would like to be licensed with, to ensure they can bring the humorous element of the film, which often makes it so popular, back to life via the slot.

Of course, that is not to say that Microgaming's range of slots are not imbued with any humour at all. Many of their other slots contain real elements of humour and this certainly helps them to appeal to players.

The great news for Microgaming, and therefore the fans of its products, is that there are a wide range of fantastic films to choose from that would provide a perfect opportunity for a fantastic slot game, imbued with humour and charm.

So save the date for August 2015 and remember to visit again for some no deposit free spins to try out the new Bridesmaids slot, we're sure it will be just as much of a hit as the original film was with audiences.
