The famed city of gold, El Dorado, has been the inspiration for a huge number of slot games over the years, so much so that if you do a search for the City of Gold slot, then you will come up with a number of different slot games, each with the same name.
This review is of the WGS Technology version of the game, but we know that there are also versions by companies like Saucify and Microgaming also available. How they compare to this, I'm not sure as we've not looked at them (but likely will in the future) so remember to add "WGS" to your search to ensure you are playing the right game.
What we have here is a typical WGS Technology slot in that it essentially sounds and plays the same way as pretty much most of their offering (for example, the Dolphin Reef slot I reviewed a short time ago has a very similar set up to this game, just a different theme). We have 25 selectable pay lines in play and a single Free Spins bonus game. The jackpot is 6,000 coins but if you can land it in Free Spins then a 3x multiplier can boost that value.
So, is this City of Gold going to be one that delivers the Midas Touch when it comes to big wins on the slot? Let's take a closer look and find out for ourselves.
Where can I play the City of Gold slot?
If you want to try your hand at a number of different slots from WGS Technology, then the place you need to visit to enjoy a massive selection of games, not to mention a fantastic starter bonus is the ever-popular Red Stag Casino.
The Casino is currently offering an exciting new bonus for customers which could see you earn up to a staggering $2,500 in bonuses alone and best of all, you don't need to make one massive deposit up front to earn the bonus as you can earn it across your first few bonuses on the site. This makes it an ideal bonus for players who make smaller, regular deposits into their account.
However, on top of that bonus cash, you will also receive anywhere up to 500 Free Spins when you join the site. This will give you plenty of opportunity to try a whole host of slots, at no extra cost to yourself. With regular new releases released every month or so, there's also something new to play at the casino frequently too.
It is a WGS Technology slot so as you might guess, the presentation is somewhat similar to any number of other slots that the company has released previously, even down to the same style of reels and the same sounds used in the game in the main. There are a few personalized sounds for the more specialized symbol wins, but in general, this is the same as you will get on any WGS Technology slot, which isn't a great start. The flourishes to personalize the game are only small and in truth, somewhat disappointing for what should be a lavish and ostentatious game, especially given the theme of the slot.
I have said this before but WGS Technology seem to develop every slot from the same base game model and that model is now looking and sounding very, very dated and the net result is not a particularly pleasing one for the player.
What's on the reels?
If you have played a WGS Technology game before then you will know that the company love their playing card low symbols and they are once again in evidence on the City of Gold slot. The lower value symbols range from the 9 through to the Ace and offer wins ranging from 5 coins up to 250 coins.
Higher value symbols that are more personalized to the City of Gold theme are the poison dart frog, the necklace and the golden idol and these offer wins ranging from 5 coins, up to a massive 3,000 coins and it is these value wins which are the most attractive feature of the slot.
The only other two symbols on the slot are the Scatter Symbol, which is a golden archway and the Wild which is an Inca temple and these are both linked in with the two bonus features of the slot as we will explore below.
The Inca Temple is the Wild or Substitute symbol as WGS Technology call it and this symbol can be found on any of the five reels and when it lands, it can substitute for any of the standard symbols (just not the Scatter) to help create additional or better value wins.
However, if you can land two or more Wilds on a pay line from left to right, then you can unlock some of the biggest wins in the game. Wins start at just 10 coins for 2 Wilds on a line, but it quickly increases to 250 coins for three, 2,000 coins for four and the game jackpot of 6,000 coins for five across the reels.
Free Spins features
The Scatter symbol offers a pay out of between 2 coins and 100 coins for landing two, three, four or five of them across the reels and in addition to this bonus, if you land three or more Scatters then you will trigger the Free Spins bonus game.
In the bonus, you receive 15 Free Spins on the same set of reels as in the base game but this time all wins in the game are tripled thanks to a 3x multiplier. What is pleasing is that you can also re-trigger the bonus from within your Free Spins and you can do this an unlimited number of times, which means you could, in theory at least, earn an unlimited number of Free Spins.
Other bonus features
Other than the bonus features listed above, there are no additional bonus features on the City of Gold slot.
Best feature of the City of Gold slot
There's no doubt that the Free Spins bonus is the best feature of the City of Gold slot by a considerable margin. The Wild symbol can produce some decent base game wins, but triggering Free Spins, while tricky, offers the best value in the game thanks to that 3x multiplier applied to all wins. However, be warned, this bonus can also pay out smaller amounts as well as larger and these pays can vary in size and how often they are triggered.
What does the City of Gold slot lack?
For me, while the City of Gold slot does have the key aspects of a modern slot included on the game, such as a Wild, Free Spins and a decent jackpot prize to chase, there is just no real evidence of any love for the game for the developers. You get the feeling WGS churn out the same slot, with a different theme and slightly tweaked bonuses time and time again and that is not what players want in my view. What is evident here is a startling lack of originality unfortunately.
I feel like I am starting to become a bit of a nag when it comes to WGS Technology games as pretty much every game has the same criticism at the moment. It just doesn't look particularly appealing, one slot is too similar to the next and the game plays quite tight and is not the most rewarding. City of Gold does have these issues and some plus points including a sizeable jackpot and a Free Spins bonus but there's nothing in the game that excites you or grabs your attention and if you want to produce a really top notch slot, then that is the bare minimum you need nowadays as the industry is just so competitive.
