I've often wondered why Lions are viewed as the kings of the jungle or as the top ranked beast in the animal kingdom. I mean, they are majestic creatures, but they are dwarfed in size and stature and also, I believe, looks by the mighty Tiger.

These incredible beasts are not just amazing looking, they are fierce and fearless too and it is little wonder then that they have become the inspiration behind the slot game King Tiger.

It is worth checking out that you are playing the WGS Technology version of the game as there is another version from another provider that uses the same name, so do be wary of trying to play this online as you may end up playing the different version instead. My advice would be to sign up with the casino outlined below to be sure you get to play the WGS Technology version.

So is this a tiger that roars loudly and offers players an exciting game that is grrrreat fun to play, or is this a game something of a pussycat in the slot world that leaves it looking a little timid? Let's take a closer look and find out.

Presentation

The presentation of the King Tiger slot is very simplistic. The sounds are, well to be truthful, non-existent when you load the slot up (I actually checked whether my volume was turned up and that the slot hadn't been accidentally muted when I first played it) and the only accompaniment you get when you spin the reels is the generic slot sounds and a rank awful little tune plays when you land a win on a pay-line. Things do get better though when you land a Wild and you hear a tiger's roar but other than that the sound is sorely disappointing.

The setting for the slot is a forested area with hazy sunlight filtering through the canopy of trees. It's neatly done and the backdrop is a nice setting for the game. The reels though are bland and white colored and I wonder if WGS Technology were looking for an actual mechanical slot feel for their game as if that was their intention (and I think it was) then I feel they hit the nail on the head.

This slot plays very much like you would play a game in a casino, the noises the way the reels spin, the sounds, animations are all designed to replicate a mechanical game, rather than an online one. Whether that is to your taste depends on the individual but if this was meant to look like a retro slot, then it has achieved its aim.

What's on the reels?

On the reels are a total of six lower value symbols. Disappointingly these are the playing card low symbols from 9 through to the ace and they pay out a range of prizes from 5 coins up to 200 coins for five aces or kings on a pay-line.

There are four higher value standard symbols on the reels alongside the lower value, the crane and deer are the two lower paying of these symbols while the Water Buffalo and the Elephant are the two higher paying, the latter offering a 1,000-coin prize for five on a pay-line and the former the 5,000-coin jackpot in the base game.

The Water Buffalo and Elephant symbols also pay out very small amounts when landed two symbols on a pay-line. These symbols are joined on the reels by two more symbols in the game but these are the main feature symbols and we'll look at what these do in the sections below.

Wild features

The Tiger symbol is the main Wild symbol (or substitute symbol as it is called in the game). It doesn't offer a pay-out for landing itself across the reels, and it only appears on the middle three reels, although it is stacked on these reels which means you can land multiple wins across several pay lines when you land them. Especially if you can land multiple Tiger Wilds on a single spin.

When you land a Tiger Wild and it initiates a pay-out you are greeted by the tiger's roar, so it is easy to know when you have landed a Wild win on the slot.

Free Spins features

The Scatter symbol is the pink flower, which I think is a water lily, and this offers you a pay-out of between 2 and 100 coins when you land between 2 and 5 of these symbols across the reels. However, if you land three or more scatters on a single spin then you are taken to the Free Spins Bonus Game.

Here you receive 10 Free Spins and during the round, every win you achieve is subject to a 3x multiplier, which can lead to some sizeable wins. You can also re-trigger additional free spins by landing three or more of the scatter symbols again during the bonus round and this can be re-triggered an unlimited amount of times.

Other bonus features

There are no other bonus features available on the King Tiger slot other than the two features outlined above.

Best feature of the King Tiger slot

This isn't a difficult choice for me because there are only two features part of the King Tiger slot and while the Wild symbol is very useful for landing some of the better wins in the base game, and give the slot some much needed audio enhancement when landed, the Free Spins bonus is definitely the best feature of the game. The main reason for that is the 3x multiplier that is applied to all wins during the bonus round and the fact that the bonus can be re-triggered and unlimited number of times.

Triggering the Free Spins round doesn't automatically mean a big payday however as the size of the wins you can land are somewhat volatile and you can earn just a small amount, as well as significantly more, but this is the bonus that offers players the best chance of earning a decent amount from their play.

What does the King Tiger slot lack?

The first and most obvious thing missing from this slot for me is a soundtrack to accompany you playing. I realize that by having a sparse soundtrack, the Tigers roar is emphasized when you land a Wild symbol as part of a win and that is a nice effect, but it just seems a throwback to the early days of online gaming when slots really were just copies of the games found in casinos.

As a retro-styled slot, it works OK but there isn't much excitement in the base game other than those Wild wins and I'd have liked to see some other form of bonus available to trigger, such as a random base game bonus, or perhaps a multiplier applied to Wild wins in the base game. My overriding impression with this slot is that they have just remapped a load of new symbols onto an existing game, put in a new backdrop and released the game, rather than designed it from bottom up to be a new slot experience.

Conclusion

If you want relatively cheap, simple retro-styled gaming then King Tiger will fit the bill. You can race through your spins relatively quickly and the fact you can play for so little per spin means it is a game affordable for all players. However, I feel the slot isn't as appealing as some modern games and the lack of a soundtrack really does mean the slot doesn't have the impact on gamers that some other slots have. Without that initial appeal, there isn't a huge amount to draw you in to play, although the jackpot size is decent at 5,000 coins. King Tiger is a slot which has some positives, but also a few negatives which tend to cancel them out.

Ratings

  • Presentation: 9 / 20 - The visual side of the game is fine as it is a decent retro slot, but where King Tiger really falls down is on the audio side of things. The lack of music as you play makes you feel initially that the sound has been muted or turned off. The tigers roar is a welcome addition on Wild wins, but other than that you are left with generic sounds. It hardly transports you to the realm of the tiger as some other slots try to do and in the end it all feels somewhat cold and clinical as a result.
  • Game-Play: 12 / 20 - The game-play on the King Tiger slot is solid without being spectacular. This is a game that lovers of older style slots will enjoy. The bonus features are simple and easy to follow and the focus is on the spinning of the reels in the base game and you can also access the jackpot in the base game, which is always a positive. But the slot lacks anything spectacular or any great depth, into which players can sink their teeth.
  • Bonus Features: 13 / 20 - The Wild symbol is the man base game bonus and it works well with the stacked Tiger symbol on the middle reels producing some good value wins at times, especially when you can land more than one set of these symbols on the reels on a single spin. The free spins round is the best aspect of the slot thanks to the fact they can be re-triggered and also that all wins come with a 3x multiplier, which means you are far more likely to get a sizeable win here than in the base game.
  • Entertainment Factor: 12 / 20 - If you are a fan of older-styled slots that focus on just spinning the reels and dishing out wins from time to time, then the King Tiger slot will tick all the right boxes for you. The bonuses enhance that simple game-play while offering something slightly different without diverting too far away from the base game. However, fans of games that offer slightly more complicated game-play and better features, not to mention a more absorbing soundtrack, will find King Tiger a little lacking.
  • Play Value: 11 / 20 - King Tiger is a medium to lower variance game but within that it can be very variable at times. Occasionally when you play, you will win regularly and it seems like you can't miss and then at other times you will go many spins without a decent win and your bankroll can take a bit of a hit. The free spins pay outs too are also varying in size to a high degree and it can be frustrating to land free spins after a long while playing, only to take home a small win.
  • Overall 57 / 100 - If you like simplistic retro-styled games then King Tiger will fit the bill for you, but those seeking something a little more advanced, polished and with a bit more depth to the game-play, offering more features, will find that King Tiger is perhaps a little too simplistic for their liking.

Good Luck!
