There was a time when the height of slot games complexity was having a Hold button on the slot which meant that you could select one or more of the reels on the slot and hold them in position, while the remaining reels span. The idea being you could hold higher value symbols and spin the reels with lower value symbols to try and get that elusive big win.

Of course, not all those spins turned out positively but the 'Hold' feature on the reels has slowly started to diminish away from slots, especially in the online world where there are all kinds of new features and snazzy bonuses that you can enjoy in the massive choice of games available to play.

However, every now and then I hanker for a game where I can play on just a trio of reels, with a Hold button in play and some familiar symbols on the slots and given the proliferation of retro slots nowadays, I am not the only one who does.

That brings us neatly onto the 777 Slot, a new, retro-styled slot from Realtime Gaming, which forgoes the usual 5x3 reel, free spins and Wild symbol look for a much simpler outlook and, hurray for this, some Hold symbols on each reel.

Not only that, but the game also offers a high base game win of 1680x your bet but there is also a higher value progressive jackpot prize available too. So does this retro slot mashed together with some more modern features hit the mark? Let's take a closer look and find out.

Retro slot fans will love how the simplistic nature of the 777 slot layout mirrors a traditional 3-reel slot you would have played in a pub, casino or arcade. The pay lines are displayed on the right of the screen together with the payout value (expressed as a multiplier of your total bet). The three reels are left of this with the Hold buttons at the foot of the reel.

The sound is simplistic but fits nicely with the slot and the music that accompanies it is rather jolly and faster paced, which does have you clicking the spin button like a bit of a whizz. The progressive jackpot is shown at the top of the screen, with the bet size controller and other info at the foot.

All in all the slot is nicely done with some neat retro styled symbols on the reels too and a clear, concise design.

What's on the reels?

Essentially, there are just three different types of symbols on the reels in this game which makes it very easy to follow.

There are the Bar symbols, which include the Single, Double and Treble Bar symbols. These double in value so three Single Bar symbols pays 10 coins, three Double Bars pays 20 and three Treble bars pays 40.

You can also land three of any bar symbols on the single pay line for a smaller 5x your stake win.

There is also a symbol of a card and coins and this offers a payout of 2x your bet if you land it anywhere on the pay line. Any two offers a payout of 10x your bet.

The 7 is the highest value symbol as the name suggests and if you land three across the reels, you win 100x your bet in the base game.

Wild features

The Coin and Card symbol mentioned above also acts as the Wild symbol in the game. It can substitute for any of the other symbols on the reels. Land one Wild as part of a win and it applies a 3x multiplier to the win, land two and the multiplier increases in value to 9x.

The Wild is a very useful symbol in the game as it contributes to so many of the base game wins.

Free Spins features

There are no Free Spins features on the 777 slot.

Other bonus features

There are a couple of other bonus features on the 777 slot that you need to know about and the first of these is the main feature of the slot, the Hold button.

You can use the Hold Button on any spin you like and you can hold one or two reels on a spin. When two reels are held, the third hold button is unavailable. When you click a reel to hold, it will apply the cost of holding that reel to your original bet size as holding the reels is not free.

If you are happy to pay the extra on your bet by holding a reel, then simply hold the reels and then click spin. If it is a little too expensive for your taste or you don't want to use the feature, you can simply deselect the Hold button and the reel will spin freely again and you'll pay the standard amount per spin you set initially.

The only time the Hold button are not available is if you land three of the Wild symbols across the reels, in which case the Hold buttons are unavailable until the next spin.

The progressive jackpot is the other feature of the 777 slot and it is available only when you make a high enough bet in the game. Bet enough on your spin and you will land the progressive jackpot if you hit three of the Wild symbols on the pay line. If your bet is a normal bet, or high bet then you will win 1000x or 1680x your stake respectively.

Best feature of the 777 slot

The Wild symbol may be the key to the bigger value wins on the 777 Slot but how can you not love the option to Hold a reel? For players like me of a certain age who remember when this first became available on slots, it is a really nostalgic throwback to the games from those days. Admittedly, it does have a cost involved to use, but used prudently, it doesn't have to be excessively expensive and can lead to some very useful base game wins.

What does the 777 slot lack?

The two obvious answers here are pay lines and Free Spins and of course, there are plenty of slots enthusiasts who won't entertain a game that doesn't have at least a few Free Spins to be won. However, in defense of the 777 Slot, it was never intended to have these bonuses and the bonuses it does have fit in superbly with the retro styling of the game, but are still given a modern twist.

The 777 slot is a fun game that offers some excellent prizes and it is beguilingly simple to play. I believe it is a lower to medium variance slot, with your experience dependent more on how much you spin as to how volatile the slot is. Big wins are hard to land but you can land a mix of lower and mid-range wins to keep your balance topped up and for slot fans of a certain generation, this game does bring back some good memories.

  • Presentation: 14 / 20 - This is a fabulous slot to play if you want quick, simple fun gaming. There's one pay line, you can select your bet size from a big range, you can then decide whether to increase that by using the Hold buttons. It's very easy to follow and the animations and graphics echo that. The music is a nice addition, but it does tend to make you want to spin at a faster rate than usual.
  • Game-play: 14 / 20 - The game play on the 777 slot is extremely simple, with the only added complication being the impact using Holds has on the size of your bet, although this is all worked out for you and you can decide whether to use them on any spin or not. You win often in the game and although most wins are small in value, you do get the occasional better value win too. All in all, this is a fun, simple slot to play.
  • Bonus Features: 14 / 20 - It's great to see the Hold option back on a slot, especially if you are a fan of older slot games that had the feature. However, there's no doubting that a lack of Free Spins will certainly put a few people off giving the game a try. Even so, this is still a retro slot packed with other features including Wilds and a progressive jackpot which is why it scores relatively highly here.
  • Entertainment Factor: 13 / 20 - Call me an old nostalgic if you like, but I did find myself transported back to my youth playing this slot. It is good, retro-fun but with enough of a modern twist to keep you coming back for more. Regular wins helps with the enjoyment and the bankroll, even if the majority are not massive in value.
  • Play Value: 14 / 20 - As a medium to low variance slot, depending on how much you bet per spin, I think that this offers decent value for money. The lowest win is 2x your bet, so when you do win, you do actually make a profit, unlike some other slots where you can win a tiny fraction of your total bet. As such, I think this slot offers genuinely good value for money.
  • Overall 69 / 100 - 777 is a very good retro styled slot that has an awful lot going for it. The Hold buttons are a real treat for older players that can remember this feature on older slot games, while the Wild symbol and progressive jackpot features will also appeal to fans of more modern games. The lack of Free Spins may put people off but even without them, this is still a fun and enjoyable retro slot to play and one of the better examples of that particular genre.

Good Luck!
