Frankenstein is Mary Shelley's most famous creation and of course, we all know that the famous monster was never called Frankenstein, but that instead it was the name of the crazed doctor that brought him to life. Well Betsoft have taken this tale and give it a more modern twist in their rather sumptuously detailed Frankenslot's Monster slot.
The story was rather a sad one in its original form but I'm pleased to say that Betsoft have taken a more cartoon and comedic approach. This is less Robert De Niro's Frankenstein, and more Mel Brook's Young Frankenstein, for those of you that like film-based comparisons.
The slot is part of Betslots Slots3 range and it has proven to be a smash hit success since its release, being the most played Betsoft slot in each of the last six months and it seems likely that its popularity is only going to continue.
So, what is it about this 5-reel slot, with 20 lines to play, that makes the game so popular? We decided to get underneath the bonnet of the game and have a much closer look and see how the good doctor has patched together this slot so it has turned into a monster hit!

Presentation
Betsoft have earned themselves a fabulous reputation when it comes to the presentation of their slots and to be fair, Frankenslot's Monster is an absolute gem of a slot when it comes to presentation. The slot is set in Dr Frankenslot's underground lab and the rather wild looking doctor is found on the right of the reels and his unfortunate monster is strapped down to the left.
Behind the monster is a large cylinder filled with liquid bubbling away and as you watch a rather creepy, Munsters-style soundtrack plays. It also kicks in when you press the spin button which can lead to a somewhat awkward overlaying of the tracks (although it is louder when you hit the spin button) and that is the only down side for me on what is an immaculate looking slot.
The reels are central to the action and all the controls for the reels are at the foot of the screen including the coin size selector, the bets per line selector and of course the Spin and Auto play buttons. There is also a Double Up button which lights up after a cash win, allowing you to try and double your win.
What's on the reels?
When it comes to what is on the reels the lower value wins are provided by the playing card low symbols. These are the 10, Jack, Queen, King and Ace and they provide wins ranging from 5 coins, up to a maximum of 100 coins for five aces on a pay line.
In truth, I was a little disappointed that Betsoft opted for the generic playing card symbols as the low wins as I'd have preferred to see some items relating more to the theme of the slot as the lower value symbols.
The better value wins come from the higher value symbols and there are five of these. There's the large electrode that hands above the monster's head, an eye in a jar, a full moon and finally Dr Frankenslot's and Frankenslot's monster. Wins with these symbols range from 30 coins up to 500 coins if you land five of the monster symbols across the reels.
There are three other symbols that appear on the reels but each of these is related to some of the main bonus features of the slot as we shall explore below.
Wild features
The Wild feature is simply the world Wild that has been electrified and it serves two purposes in the game. Firstly, it can be used to replace any of the higher or lower value symbols outlined above to help create additional winning lines, or to increase the value of a win. It cannot be used to replace Bonus or Scatter symbols however.
The other purpose the Wild serves is to award its own wins. These begin at 200 coins for three Wilds on a line, and increase to 500 coins for four and the maximum base game win of 1,000 coins if you land five wilds across the reels on a winning line.
Free Spins features
To enter the Free Spins bonus round you need to land the Scatter symbol on the second, third and fourth reels on a single spin. When you do, you receive eight free spins but with each free spin there is a bonus.
On each spin in your bonus round, the monster becomes electrified and will turn one, two or three symbols on the reels Wild for that spin. You can re-trigger the bonus by landing three or more scatters during Free Spins, however you cannot trigger the other bonus game from within the Free Spins round.
Other bonus features
The other bonus feature of the Frankenslot's Monster slot is the Bonus Round. This is triggered when you land three of the Bonus symbols on the first, third and fifth reels on a single spin. When you do, you are taken to a screen where you get to set the settings on Dr Frankenslot's electrifying machine. Once you have adjusted them, you then pull the lever and the monster will be electrified.
Once this happens the monster will wake up and award you a multiplier of your total bet as a win, which can be as much as 25x.
You can also gamble cash wins on the slot using the Double Up button. This takes you to a simple coin toss game where you must select heads or tails. Select correctly and you double your money. Select incorrectly however and you lose your cash.
Best feature of the Frankenslot's Monster slot
There is so much to like on the Frankenslot's Monster slot that it is easy to see why it has enjoyed huge popularity with Betsoft players since its release. The presentation of the slot is fantastic and the low variance means that you win often, and what is nice about that is that you get a good mix of lower value wins mixed in with a sizeable win too. The base game plays nicely and the bonus features, when triggered, do add a great deal to the game. I like the more consistent pay-outs from the Bonus round more-so than the more variable free spins pays.
What does the Frankenslot's Monster slot lack?
I don't think the Frankenslot's Monster slot lacks a great deal to be honest. I don't know whether I just had bad luck, but I felt the Double Up option was a bit of a waste of time as I seemed to win far less often than I lost my money, so I ended up steering clear of that feature and just collecting my wins instead. At a push I'd have liked to have seen another bonus feature somewhere along the line, maybe a randomly triggered base game bonus, but that would be very nit-picky as this is a very fine slot as it stands.
Conclusion
Having now played the Frankenslot's Monster slot in full, I can now fully appreciate why this is one of the most popular slots in the Betsoft range. The actual slot itself is very simple, it has a couple of bonus features, a gamble feature and an easy to follow base game, but it is the way that the slot is presented combined with the nice mix of wins offered by the lower variance that I think makes the game appeal a great deal. This is a fabulously enjoyable slot to play and although it isn't perfect, and a few small tweaks could have made it better, it is still well worth spending some time getting to know in more detail.
