There's a new kid on the block these days and they are making something of a splash in the world of online slots. Spartan Slots have agreed a deal with Red Rake Gaming to host a number of the developer's games on site and one of the first to be released as part of this new agreement is the innovative Knight's Honour slot.

Based on the days of yore, when loyal servants of the kings would roam the lands generally doing all kinds of good, this attractively designed slot is somewhat different to the standard offering as you can elect to increase the number of reels per spin from five to six, at a cost of double the price of your standard bet. The sixth reel means that you can win considerably more on a spin however, if you are lucky enough to hit six of the same symbols (or Wilds) on any of the five pay lines in play.

Designed to be played on smartphone, tablet or desktop, the game has some lovely quality graphics and good sound and spins start at just 0.10 per spin (0.20 if you want the sixth reel in play) and the maximum value spin is 17.50 for five reels, 35.00 for six. Pay at the top bet per spin and you could win up to 70,000.

There's a fair number of top quality medieval themed slots around today so does Knight's Honour offer us something a little different to what is already available? Let's take a closer look and find out more about Knight's Honour (British spelling of Honor).

Presentation

Set in the famous Kingdom of Camelot at the time of reign of King Arthur, can you join his Knights of the Round Table in their quest to find the Holy Grail? With a sumptuous backdrop for the slot, the graphical presentation of this Red Rake Gaming slot is up there with the best and the six reels are displayed overlaid on that attractive landscape scene backdrop.

The slot is rather ornately designed which does fit in nicely with the Knight-theme of the game and the soundtrack is also very simplistic. There's no dramatic music or soundtrack other than birdsong and in truth, it is rather refreshing and relaxing to have a slot that sounds, well, very much like a slot used to sound like.

All in all, the presentation is rather simple, but it has been executed very nicely and the slot looks fantastic especially on mobile devices.

What's on the reels?

There are a number of different symbols on the reels, 12 in total not including the Scatter symbol and these can be divided up into the lower, medium and higher value symbols.

The playing card low symbols from the jack through to the ace are the lower value symbols on the slot and these offer pays from three to five (or six symbols if you have the extra reel activated). Wins start at half of your bet but can increase up to around 50x your bet for a six-symbol win or 12.5x your bet for a 5-symbol win.

The medium value symbols are all linked in with the King Arthur and his Knights of the Round table story and feature a sword, a helmet, what looks like to be the Holy Grail and the castle at Camelot. These symbols all offer wins up to 100x your standard bet.

The higher value symbols are the three Knights, who are colored red, orange and green for easy identification. These offer wins from just two symbols on a pay line but for six you will win 300x your standard bet.

The other symbols on the reels are the Wild symbol (Merlin) and the Scatter and these are the key to unlocking the bonus features on the slot.

Wild features

The Merlin Wild is the highest value symbol on the reels and it serves a number of purposes in the game. It can act as a substitute for any of the other symbols on the reels and when it does and is part of a win, it also applies a 2x multiplier to that win increasing its potential value.

However, you can also win for landing up to six of the Merlin Wilds across a pay line and these are by far the highest value wins in the game. Land six of these symbols and you can pocket up to 2,000x your standard bet.

The Wild symbol can substitute for all of the symbols on the reel but not the Scatter symbol, which is used primarily to access the Free Spins feature as we shall explore below.

Free Spins features

The Scatter symbol in the game is the horse symbol and if you land two or more of these symbols then you will guarantee yourself a pay out. The size of the pay out depends on how many Scatters landed and ranges from 0.5x your win up to 750x your win for landing six Scatters.

In addition to the payout, if you land three, four, five or six Scatters then you will trigger the Free Spins bonus game on the Knight's Honour slot. The number of Scatters landed will decide the number of Free Spins awarded with three Scatters earning 10 Free Spins, four earning 15, five earning 30 and the maximum six earning you 40 Free Spins.

During Free Spins all of the three higher value Knight's Symbols will become Wild symbols over the course of your spins, in addition to the Merlin symbol, which can of course greatly increase your chances of landing a bigger value win. The size of the pay outs for these symbols also increases during Free Spins, which is another reason why it is the most lucrative part of the game.

You can trigger additional Free Spins by landing two or more Scatters in Free Spins, land two and you win one more additional Free Spins but land three, four, five or six and you win the same number of additional Free Spins as you get from the original trigger (so between 10 and 40).

Lastly, on your 6th to 10th Free Spins you automatically receive a 2x multiplier on any win and from the 11th spin on wards, you receive a 3x multiplier on any win.

Other bonus features

The main bonus feature of the Knight's Honour slot is the sixth Extra Reel which you can choose to activate at a cost of doubling your bet. This increases the number of reels in play from five to six and while it makes it more expensive per spin, it does mean that the much higher 6-reel wins become available to you to win in the base game and during Free Spins.

You can switch this feature on and off any time you wish throughout the session by simply clicking on the button to activate or deactivate it.

Best feature of the Knight's Honour slot

There's no doubt that it is when you unlock the Free Spins bonus game, that this is when the Knights Honour slot comes to life. The base game can be hard work at times, especially with so few pay lines in play but when you hit the Free Spins game and have those three Extra Wilds become available as you play through the spins, it can make a huge different and some of the better value payouts become much more winnable.

What does the Knight's Honour slot lack?

I felt there were two key issues with the Knight's Honour slot. Firstly, I think the doubling of the standard bet for the sixth reel is a bit unfair on the player as the chances of landing a six symbol win in the base game, or free spins, is very small, but without the option available the slot is even less attractive to players. However the doubling of the cost per spin for the option is a tad excessive in my view. I also feel that the lack of pay lines in the game does hurt its appeal as with just five winning lines, it can be an age between wins and often in the base game, these are just lower value wins.

Conclusion

Knight's Honour is a beautiful looking slot that has some interesting and unusual features, particularly the option to add a sixth reel to the game. The Free Spins round is where players can really land some big prizes, but it can be expensive to play for long enough to access this bonus, so sensible bankroll management is required to get the best of this game, especially because there are so few pay lines available and a larger than usual number of symbols on the reels. If you like higher variance slots then you are likely to enjoy this game far more than those who prefer the more regular pay outs on lower variance games.

Ratings

  • Presentation: 16 / 20 - There is no doubt that Red Rake Gaming have produced a very eye-catching and beautifully designed slot. The graphics are sumptuous on the eye and the soundtrack, although not as bombastic as some, is actually all the better for it as you get a more relaxed and quiet ambiance when playing this slot, which offers a change of pace to the usual slots offering nowadays.
  • Game-play: 11 / 20 - Unfortunately, the problem I feel with the Knight's Honour slot is that it has too few pay lines for the size of the reels and number of symbols on the reels. Wins are few and far between when compared to other slots, even higher variance games, and that does detract from its appeal. Also the fact that it doubles the cost of your spin to have the sixth reel in play is a big mark up, especially when you consider how infrequently the outcome of that sixth reel spin will have an effect on the size of your win.
  • Bonus Features: 13 / 20 - The Free Spins bonus game is the best aspect of the slot and it can be one of the best ways to land a big money win in the game. However triggering it is not easy and it can take a fair few spins to access the bonus. The Wilds are also not immediately available and you have to work your way through the spins to activate them all. Re-triggering the bonus is a great way to access both these better value winning spins and a larger multiplier of 3x the win from the 11th spin on wards and in truth, that is the way to earn your cash in this slot.
  • Entertainment Factor: 10 / 20 - Unfortunately, all the factors above combined for a pretty average game in my view and not one that will live long in the memory. I feel that the slot is too punitive on players. There's not enough wins, the wins you do land are generally very small, there's too many symbols for the number of pay lines and reels and the fact that you have to double your bet to have that sixth reel in play also makes things more expensive to play for the bigger prizes.
  • Play Value: 10 / 20 - I've gone for a mid-range value here. With just 5-reels activated this would have been a score of 12, however with the 6th reel activated, I'd have put this way down to 7 or 8. As such, I've given the slot a 10 assuming that, like me, most players will try six reels and then switch to five when you realize that it is simply an expensive way to spin with not many real benefits on the vast majority of spins.
  • Overall 60 / 100 - Knight's Honour is an interesting slot with some unusual bonus features and if you are a fan of games that offer something different and which have high variance, then this is the slot for you to try. However I feel low to medium variance fans are going to struggle to like this slot as it can be expensive to play, offer too few rewards and it can be very difficult to access the bonus features.

Good Luck!
