Games Related to Funky Chicken
There are many words you can use to describe a chicken. Feathery would be perhaps an appropriate one, flightless another but I can't say that funky is the adjective that leaps to mind.
On the face of it, chickens are arguably the least funky animals that there are. They walk around bobbing their heads, make a strange clucking sound and move in a jerky, unusual way.
So, what is it about the protagonist in WGS Technology's classic Funky Chicken slot that makes it so cool? Well that was the main mission of this review so I slipped on a pair of wellingtons over my dungarees, popped my farmers hat on and set out for the farm to try and understand exactly why this has been one of the most popular WGS Technology slots this year.
Will I find that these chickens are indeed as funky as they come, or are these birds smelling of rotten eggs? Let's take a closer look at some of the key elements of the slot first before we attempt to find out.

The first thing that strikes you about the Funky Chicken slot is that it is a bright and cheerful slot, which has a comical cartoon style feel to it. The sky is a rather unusual shade of crimson for this slot, with the setting sun hidden behind the reels. The background also includes a corn field complete with a scarecrow, who will also appear on the reels as you will find out.
So it's clear that we are on the farm and that we are also looking at a slot that has 5 reels, each with three symbols visible and a total of 25 pay-lines, which you can select individually to play. The main operation buttons for the slot are located on the right hand side of the screen, while the main information, coin selection, line selection and other information bars are shown at the foot of the reels.
The soundtrack is also nicely done with a comical, farmyard twang to the soundtrack which suits the game very nicely indeed, however the main sounds of the slot are the mechanical sounds you would hear on a traditional game and this does give it away that the Funky Chicken does play and even look like a more retro styled slot.
What's on the reels?
When it comes to what is on the reels of the Funky Chicken slot then the lower value symbols are the playing card lows. They are in three pairs, 10 and 9, Jack and Queen and Ace and King and each pair pays out the same amount. This ranges from a low of 5 coins for a win up to a top pay out on these symbols of 150 coins.
There are four higher value symbols on the reels and these are the egg, the tractor, the farmer's house (which doesn't actually look much like a farmer's house if we're being brutally honest) and the farmer himself, who doesn't look too happy and who is toting a shotgun. These symbols offer pay outs starting at 20 coins and they go up to a maximum of 1,250 coins.
Alongside these standard symbols there are two other symbols on the reels, which are both linked to the two main features of the slot.
The Wild symbol on the reel is the Scarecrow in the cornfield symbol and this serves two purposes. Firstly, it can award you the highest paying wins in the game, up to the jackpot of 5,000 coins if you can land five of these Wilds on a single line.
Even four of the Wilds in a row offers a decent smaller pay out of 1,000 coins, but the amounts for 2 or 3 symbols in a row are considerably smaller (10 coins and 150 coins respectively).
The Wild can substitute for any of the Wild symbols to help create additional winning lines during the game, though unfortunately there is no multiplier applied to any wins you may land during the base game using this symbol.
Free Spins features
The Funky Chicken symbol is the main scatter symbol in the game and you need to land three or more of these symbols across the reels to launch the free spins bonus game. When this is triggered you land 15 free spins and before you spin the reels for the first time, the Funky Chicken will appear on screen.
He will then reveal what your multiplier is for your free spins and all winnings during free spins are subject to the multiplier, which can lead to some very sizeable wins.
You can also re-trigger the free spins bonus by landing three or more of the Funky Chicken scatter symbols during the bonus round, which will give you another group of 15 free spins on top of any that you have remaining.
Other bonus features
There are no other bonus features on the Funky Chicken slot other than those features listed above.
Best feature of the Funky Chicken slot
There are several aspects of the Funky Chicken slot that I like very much. I like the fact it is in a comical, cartoon style and that the slot doesn't take itself too seriously. The emphasis is clearly on fun and I think it works well alongside the simple reel noise effects and the occasional comedy animal noise or similar when you land a win or feature.
The Wild works as a standard Wild should but the Free Spins bonus is also a nice touch as it allows you the chance to earn additional free spins as well as a potentially decent sized multiplier which can increase the value of these wins markedly. The one drawback with this though is that the free spins bonus can be a little difficult to hit at times and you need to be patient and play through the spins in order to activate the bonus.
What does the Funky Chicken slot lack?
Assuming everyone is aware that this is a modern slot but with elements of retro gaming included as standard, then I feel the only thing lacking from this slot would have been the option to add a little extra spice to the base game by the inclusion perhaps of a randomly triggered bonus feature, or maybe adding a small multiplier to some of the wins you achieve with the Wild symbol. I think either of these items would have been a strong addition to the game and made it even more playable and enjoyable than it already is.
There is absolutely nothing to dislike about the Funky Chicken slot, other than some more experienced slot gamers may find the game a little too simplistic for their liking. As a more retro-styled slot, the game works well and it does feel like you are playing an older mechanized reel version slot at times, but there are enough modern features mixed in with these to ensure that fans of more modern slots and some of the key features that attract players, are still left with plenty to enjoy. Funky Chicken isn't the most complex slot, but some of the best slots available today are very simple to play and this certainly falls into that category.
