Think of a progressive jackpot slot game with the word "Moolah" in the title and you'd most likely think of the giant that is the MegaMoolah.com. Well, while that slot is destined for the slots hall of fame, there is another game that fits that mold. Rival have their own progressive offering Major Moolah and it offers something very different.
For a start, this is a retro-styled slot, with no Wild, no Free Spins or indeed any bonus of any kind other than the progressive jackpot. This is stripped back slot gaming to the bone and the question is, does it work?
We decided to take a look under the bonnet of the slot to find out for ourselves.

Presentation
What you have with the Major Moolah slot is a hark back to the golden days of slot gaming, when one-armed bandits, three reels and a single pay line were all the rage. I am old enough to remember these types of games and the fact that they used to cost a penny and sometimes you could win as much as 0.10 playing them!
Of course, Major Moolah has been designed to replicate those older slots, but it is also in the modern age when it comes to wagering with bets starting at 1.00 per spin, but you can increase the amount of coins you can bet up to three per spin In fact, if you want to trigger the progressive jackpot prize, then you must wager three coins in order to stand any chance to do so.
The reels are to the left of the screen and are retro styled, with the different pay lines you can win on displayed on the left of the screen. The main controls are at the foot of the reels, with the progressive jackpot prize shown at the top above the reels. Sounds are very basic and are general crowd/casino noise and a simple jazz tune played over the top and then some reel sounds when you click the start button.
What's on the reels?
Just as the Major Moolah slot is a retro-styled game, so the symbols on the reels also reflect that too. There are essentially four types of symbols on the reels, but there are no Wild symbols, no Scatter symbols and no Free Spins or other bonus rounds to trigger.
There are three Bar symbols, single, double and treble which increase in value from smallest to largest. You can win by landing three of the same bar symbols across the reels, but you can also win a much smaller amount by landing any three bar symbols across the reels.
There are also three Lucky 7 symbols, blue, white and red/gold. Again, you can win by landing three of each symbol across the reels, or a smaller amount by landing any combination of these 7 symbols.
The other two symbols are the Gold Coin, which pays out when you land any one, two or all three on the reels and the final symbol is the Major Moolah logo. This pays out the highest amounts in the game, 750 coins for one coin, 1,500 coins for two and the progressive jackpot for all three coins wagered on each spin.
Wild features
There are no Wild symbols on the Major Moolah slot.
Free Spins features
There is no Free Spins bonus available on this slot.
Other bonus features
The only bonus available on the slot is the progressive jackpot prize. The progressive jackpot can only be won if you bet three coins per spin and land the three Major Moolah logo symbols across the single pay line.
Best feature of the Major Moolah slot
There aren't really any features on the Major Moolah slot of note, but the best of those that are on the game is the fact that you can mix and match the different 7 and Bar symbols together to create those lower value wins. That, and the wins for a single Gold Coin, are the most common wins you will land on the slot and they are what generally will keep your bankroll afloat when the game hits a quieter spell.
What does the Major Moolah slot lack?
It's pretty unusual to see a progressive jackpot game that is essentially just tagged on to an older style slot with no bonus features and of course, I feel that this game would certainly have benefited from a few additions. A Wild symbol would have been a great addition and I'd liked to have seen the opportunity to use a multiplier to increase the value of those lower value wins. This is not a game likely to appeal to players wanting to play a modern slot, or a massive progressive jackpot as in both cases Major Moolah falls short.
Conclusion
I have to be honest and say that Major Moolah doesn't really hit the mark for me. Sure it is a retro-styled progressive jackpot game, and as such they are pretty rare nowadays, but I just feel that there is not enough excitement or content in the game to get people excited to play it. Even the progressive jackpot prize, which at the time I reviewed it stood at just under $16,800, is pretty small compared to some of the other games you can play, for a considerably cheaper price per spin. Retro players may enjoy it, but I think those that prefer more modern slots and game with added features, should steer clear.
